Virtua Fighter 5 graphics article (Watch Impress)

I believe it is the Playstation's OpenGL implementation. IIRC, Deano said it was not worthy of being used. Apparently there's another API that performs better or exposes more features or both.

It doesn't do anything out of the ordinary for next gen standard.

I wonder if they could offload VTF stuff to Cell's SPEs. That way they have enough for RSX to do the game in 1080p or add SSS to the characters, so they look less like plastic.

They should also subdivide the clothes a bit more, it looks too coarse at the moment, and increase the poly count of the characters to around 250k per character, in its current form it lacks poly and it shows.

Other then Not including NexGen(tm) ugly aliased shadow standard you mean? :p

Well they don't look too good up close but I suppose PCF save the day :) But yeah I was looking at DMC4 screens and notice how bad the shadows in that game (still early I know). Generally I've given up on good shadow for this upcoming gen. :(

The thing is, Virtua Tennis 3, which runs on the same Lindbergh hardware as VF5, is also coming to the X360. To the best of my knowledge, it's being handled by a different developer than the PS3 port, but still, it looks close enough to the arcade version to me, and to the best of my knowledge, it won't be sold in Japan. So really, I shouldn't consider that to be a problem at all. The thing that does annoy me, and probably many other Xbox 360 gamers is that the selection of fighting games out now and in the pipeline are horrible at best. The best fighting game out there on the X360 is the Live Arcade port of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Not that I'm complaining about UMK3- I think it was a pretty good port- but that alone should say something about how outright bad things are looking. DOA4 is just too counter-and-jiggle heavy gor my tastes, Fight Night Round 3 is more of a boxing simulator, Smackdown VS. Raw 2007 is more of a wrestling simulator, and I don't know much about the new Def Jam game, so it's not like there would be much competition.

Oh God, did I wreck this thread?

Yep VT3 is on 360. Actually I think IGN noted the PS3 port looks better at this stage. But I'm sure the 360 version is within 10% looking the same.

I think its maybe within 9.005 % looking the same ;)

Well the method VF5 is using for this is using some kind of filter for the shadow maps. It doesn't sound too expensive and gives pretty decent results. I don't think you should give up yet.

I think the PS3 version can run at 1080p, and the X360 version can only run at 720p, but not a lot of people would care either way. It's tennis, after all. And also, the PS3 version of VF5 is running at 720p max, right? ;)
