Virtua Fighter 5 graphics article (Watch Impress)

The 3x polygon count comparison was to the NAOMI2 versions of Virtua Fighter 4. That makes it a six times boost over the PS2 versions.

That's good to know. VF4 on ps2 was a fantastic port but noticably inferior to the arcade.
The aliasing jumped out and the backgrounds lost detail.
It sounds like VF5 on ps3 may actually look superior to arcade hardware. :D

yah you can see some aliasing in some of the shadows- the lighting looks amazing looks like itll be an almost exact port. incredible.

The Lindbergh only uses a Geforce 6 so I find it quite disappointing the PS3 version is only going to look as good as the arcade version.

Even if RSX has been downgrade I guess it's still way more powerful than a single 6 series geforce.

The game looks good enough to sell, plus they don't want to detract too much from the arcade. There's no point from a developer POV in learning a new hardware and pushing for more on this title.

I think this game demonstrates the advantage of closed box hardware, such as using specific nVidia implementations and being able to optimise shaders. Scale up what they're doing onto RSX and use the SPEs, and later fighters are going to look amazing!

You are right, it's just I'd like to live in an ideal world where developers made full use of the hardware in each machine I suppose.

No he's correct. Unless you do serious multi-threading (and I seriously doubt they are on this quick port) Cell and Xbox 360 main general purpose CPU's are well known to be weak.

I'm betting VF5 basically runs on the PPE alone (or whatever it's called) the same as first gen Xbox360 games likely run on a single core.

So what part of me saying "I'd have bought that if you'd said "Cell's PPE" didn't you understand? ;)

But the Lindbergh had 1gb of RAM, didn't it? So there's that.

I think yes, they can make the game look better next time. But right now, a lot of people are going to settle for 'Arcade Perfect'.

Also, it's going to be interesting to see what they do in terms of extras.

As has been mentioned elsewhere, that's mostly there for reducing loading times. There's not a GB of graphics data while fighting!

For clarity, there's 256 MB GDDR3 on the GPU, and 1 GB PC3200 DDR main RAM (3.2 GB/s) accessed over PCIe. There's not enough BW between main RAM and GPU to make much realtime use of that 1 GB. Pretty much all the graphics data has to be in the VRAM (as Vysez pointed out in a thread a while back).

This is common known misinformation (spreaded as PR bull) which was implicitly denied by MS in those GDC 06 presentations, where even launch titles like Kameo and PGR3 were shown using all of the cores and threads available!

I remember Kameo utilising one core for data decompression.

Btw thanks for the VF article titanio ;)

Eh, no. As I wrote above the developers at SEGA said they first planned to use only PPE but it was not sufficient so they were forced to use SPEs.

Yeah it kind of is but it's a port.

There are a few areas where PS3 is less specced than Lindbergh (~30% less internal GPU bandwidth, less system RAM, less easy CPU than P4).

Plus, isn't it 1080P on PS3?

But yep, they ought to be able to do a lot more if they built ground up for PS3 in the future.

I have not heard anyone say 1080p yet for VF5. At TGS it was 720p.

It does seem to have been pretty complete for a while now. Yet they are not releasing it till March next year. Maybe they are adding features or working on the multiplayer matching/ranking service or something.

Have you ever played a previous version? If so, you'll know that the 'console extras' are traditionally a pretty beefy addition.

Okay, this might sound like a stupid question, but can a port of VF5 be done on the Xbox 360? I'm trying to write a letter to Sega about why I feel so strongly about why it should be done, but the technical aspects seem a little confusing. Could something like VTF be done on the Xenos GPU? Can a more efficent use of the CPU's three cores in the X360 be beneficial? What the heck is PSGL anyways? You guys are the experts here, I need some hard facts to help bolster my case if possible. I'd love to buy this for the PS3, but I'm a poor college kid, and I don't have an extra $600 lying around. Thanks for any advance help in understanding how this stuff works, guys!

I would say the chances of you being successful are somewhere between slim and none...but anyway...

There isn't any reason why this game couldn't be done on the X360 given what we know. There's little use trying to convince Sega that it's technically possible...they full well know already and if anything it would be insulting for you to try educate them on anything less that the topics of research papers. I wouldn't go that route if I were you. Simply say you would like to play VF5 on the X360 and further express how many other games would like to do so as well.

However, as I feel Sony has taken steps to ensure VF5's exclusivity or at least would exhibit some displeasure to Sega porting to the X360 at this point. The VF series is more or less synonymous with Sony's platform and I'm not so sure Sega desires for it to be any other way.

Quite simply, VF is very popular in Japan, and Microsoft needs to show more success in that market.

The thing is, Virtua Tennis 3, which runs on the same Lindbergh hardware as VF5, is also coming to the X360. To the best of my knowledge, it's being handled by a different developer than the PS3 port, but still, it looks close enough to the arcade version to me, and to the best of my knowledge, it won't be sold in Japan. So really, I shouldn't consider that to be a problem at all. The thing that does annoy me, and probably many other Xbox 360 gamers is that the selection of fighting games out now and in the pipeline are horrible at best. The best fighting game out there on the X360 is the Live Arcade port of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Not that I'm complaining about UMK3- I think it was a pretty good port- but that alone should say something about how outright bad things are looking. DOA4 is just too counter-and-jiggle heavy gor my tastes, Fight Night Round 3 is more of a boxing simulator, Smackdown VS. Raw 2007 is more of a wrestling simulator, and I don't know much about the new Def Jam game, so it's not like there would be much competition.

Oh God, did I wreck this thread?

Then get the $500 version :p
