Unveiling of XB2 - GDC 2004 24th March

What does this mean then, if they reveal the console, will they also reveal specs? And, if they reveal it now (well "now" meaning on the 24th, of course), what does that say about the launch date? If it's very far off, they'd just hold back sales of their current hardware as people start to anticipate the next gen.

Companies have gone under this way, though I guess that's not likely when it comes to MS. ;)

They are gonna give some general informaion, but i'm sure performance info will be left out. GDC runs from the 22nd - 26th I believe... So it would make sense if they showed something in the middle of the conference.

I'm thinking it will just be tech, as GDC is for developers it would make sense to show them something technical... I doubt they have any games ready on it to be shown at this point.

That's good! I'll be there ;)
Too bad Sony is pushing PSP this year (GDC included)..I would like to know more about PS3.

Sure. The processor or graphics chips aren't nearly completed, they've just started rolling out development kits (with significantly different hardware than what will be in the actual Xbox Next), but they'll have actual game code running.

...

New ways of introducing consoles.

Bill Gates : Hi, I am Bill Gates, but it's not really me, but a virtual me rendered on Xbox Next.

Kutaragi Ken : Hi, I am Kutaragi Ken, but it's not really me, but a virtual me rendered on PSX3.

Microsoft's Robbie Bach will reportedly discuss next-gen software strategy at the San Jose developer's summit.
TOKYO--The consensus in the industry is that the Xbox Next probably won't be released until 2005--at the earliest. However, it looks like attendees of the 2004 Game Developer's Conference might get a sneak peak at the next-generation console's games in two and a half weeks.

Bloomberg quoted Microsoft Japan's Asako Miyata as saying that Chief Xbox Officer Robbie Bach will appear at the San Jose, California, conference on March 24. According to Miyata, Bach will outline Microsoft's software strategy for the Xbox Next by discussing games that will run on the console and revealing some technical aspects about the console's format.

Miyata also commented that Microsoft has not yet decided when to reveal the specs for the Xbox Next. However, he did hint that the console's hardware will most likely not be unveiled during the Game Developer's Conference.

That's not what I meant. They could show early work of titles, or just a few teasers. It doesn't have to be an actual build.

Dave you hit the nail right on the head.

anyway, I expect a very general and very vauge outline of Xbox Next, only. such as, the format it will run, that Xbox Next will be DX10 / DirectX Next capable. perhaps touching on Xbox1 compatability, a very rough estimation of power. probably, they'll show some prerendered CGI clips as well as realtime demos on the new R420 -- much like the march 2000 realtime demos on NV15/GeForce2 and prerendered Robot-Raven & Afro Thunder CGIs that they showed for Xbox.

Personally I'd be surprised if they did much more than announce that it exists, their partners and the timeline. And they might not cover even that much. They might do some pretty tech demo's, but were a ways a way from anything even remotely resembling real hardware at this point.

If a developer wantd to know about Xenon it's easy for him to find out, any "announcement" at GDC is for the benefit of the press and the public at large.

I doubt an announcement of specs would hold back current Xbox sales. Anyone considering buying an Xbox now is probably not the type of person that buys a console when it is first released.
