Unreal Engine 5, [UE5 Developer Availability 2022-04-05]

I'm tempted to feel sorry for him that he has to field such questions but hopefully he see's it as a compliment that people are so insanely invested in convincing themselves and others that only the PS5 could possibly run this demo at these settings and this performance.

Never been intrested in laptops before, i always assumed that mobile gpu variants didn't have the same specs as the desktop ones. Example, a GTX980 dgpu was much better specced then a laptop 980. It seems that since pascal things have changed, aside from clocks, they share the same specs for the most.
Actually might get a laptop in that class (the UE demo was running on), next generation console performance in a all-in-one machine i can easily take anywhere etc. Could easily hook it up to a tv etc. Offcourse, if the prices are somewhat human.
It's not shocking that a 2070 class pc can run this at the same settings etc, but that it does so in a laptop is. This whole ordeal seems laptop PR marketing lol.
Also, i have no doubt optimizing exists on all platforms, they probably can get it to 60 on both that laptop, xsx and even ps5.

Also just downloaded the 1.33GB 4K Vimeo file using Chrome video downloader :yes:and played it on my TV, damn it looked so much better than the poop Youtube feed and it almost looked like native 4k due to lack of shimmering, aliasing and artifacts. UE5's upscaler might also be super effective here.

Can everyone please filter out the platform warring. This is a discussion about a new rendering tech and how it's achieved, ahead of Epic just plain telling us (making all this discussion irrelevant apart from seeing if we can guess before hand), and platform doesn't matter except to fuel discussion about what is or isn't happening.

Please leave all assumptions at the door. Where there are holes in the information, please don't fill in the blanks with expectations and instead entertain the different possibilities. eg. We don't know whether the demo run on the laptop was at the same quality as the PS5 demo or not. Discussion should entertain the possibilities that it was and that it wasn't. Focus on finding facts we can know rather than arguing over interpretations we can't validate.

The important point being he actually ran it on his laptop, and didn't just run a 40 fps video of the 30fps PS5 demo. The fact he also watched/showed a video doesn't change that.

Can we please move on to discussing the fact this runs on a laptop, and on PS5, and what the differences may or may not be, etc. You know, technical talk. ;)

Any discussion regarding that will mean alot of guesses (nothing wrong with that), as we don’t know settings of either or anything technical.
It isn’t far fetched the gpu in the laptop can do it, perhaps even better. It’s the nvme ssd that could be a problem since it’s a standard pc arch, they probably have to do things different since 7gb/s drives arent out yet.

He played a video in his laptop on the stream, but commented on how it ran on the editor on his laptop.

They took the bilibili video down. So I can’t confirm anymore.

That moment was pretty quick. I remember he said “Our target for nextgen consoles is 60fps but we haven’t achieved it yet. [Blah blah, facing screen] I guarantee we can achieve ... “.

Stopped abruptly, looked around, lifted his laptop with screen facing sideway, and continued “In fact, our laptops already ran the last scene you saw at 40fps in editor mode with the assets not fully cooked”. [The demo was paused earlier at the scene where light shone down at the rocks at the beginning]

I don’t recall the camera zooming into his laptop screen (the angle was off). I wanted to see it too. The camera was fixed. If there’s any close up video, it could be from another segment of the show I haven’t watched, or from elsewhere.

At the end of the day, the laptop comment was supposed to be a note in support of 60fps on nextgen consoles (without specifying other settings). The video, if recorded there, may be played under a different context.

Patsu has given the info behind the engineer's comments - he played a demo in the editor. Anything to do with watching videos is something else.

But really was a video. You can see an X button in one of the tweets which i've provided. Otherwise if this was an editor of UE5 engine he surely could remove that and put something else, isn't it.

Surely optimization will proving further. Like this guy said :

1) The icon used for a button tells you nothing about the platform it is running on. Why would they waste time changing the texture of an icon?? Just so people scrutinising tweets won't get confused?
2) It doesn't matter than someone watched a video. The information linked to originally had the Epic Engineer says he ran the demo. That's not ambiguous or confusing. It would be bloody stupid for him to be talking about getting the framerate higher and then demonstrate their engine is getting above 30 fps already and tell everyone his laptop is able to hit 40 fps in part of the demo, only for said engineer to actually be showing a video of PS5 running the game and running it at 30 fps. Wouldn't it?

Clearly, an engineer has the demo running, the first part, at 40 fps on a GTX 2080 equipped laptop, unless someone somewhere is lying and this event never took place, or the engineer wasn't an engineer. Let's go with the sane interpretation and put this to rest. Let's continue the discussion accepting UE5 is up and running on a high-spec laptop getting good results until there's real evidence to the contrary. And by 'let's', I mean I'll remove subsequent debate about if it really happened as OT and consider thread-bans for repeat offenders.

It did ran on the laptop, but when we combine that multiple articles say epic noted sata ssd is not enough, and the engineer said they had careful data layout in the ssd for the flight section, that hints at something more. That to me says the careful data layout was necessary for the flight portion to be possible on nvme drives. Which suggests without such careful layout that level of detail at that speed might not be possible. So a free flight open world section might not be possible on that laptop.

He's trying to downplay ssd speed requirements but the slip of the tongue of using careful data layout, suggests that was done for a reason, and was necessary. Suggesting it might otherwise stress or exceed even nvme drives capacity.

Or like getting to 60fps, the ssd streaming hasn't been optimized, could take advantage of direct storage etc.
This is just the current state of the in development engine, same way the ps5 demo was at that point in time.

Or it wasn't meant to down play anything and was meant to show the progress being made.

His "no need for fast SSD" comments were made in the context of that tech demo. It is reasonable because that demo is meant to showcase Unreal Engine 5. e.g., While the "Squeeze" segment may not be needed when demoing PS5, it may be there for demoing older platforms. Throughout the event, the engineers made it very clear that they are cross platform developers. I won't use their remarks to box in exclusive console features.

"We can do it without X hardware feature" is a requirement or selling point for them. There may or may not be caveats.

He acknowledged in passing that fast I/O is needed for streaming large game world. They expect/count on it.

And yes, they are certainly not done with development yet.

I strongly question that games will ship with the LOD0 model anytime soon though. I’m pretty sure that would mean barely a single game would fit on the Playstation 5’s SSD ...

Presumably there will always be a pre-release asset culling run to compress the space taken?

It's a work in progress. We can't conclude anything about this demo and IMO it's silly to try and extrapolate as such. There's a good year+ of development that might change anything.

We'll know what benefits PS5's SSD brings, if any, when Epic talk about the engine.

Epic Team commented on Twitter the squeeze Segment only exists to Show how dense the meshes and textures are up close - it has nothing to do with loading.

Why are there constant guesses as to why this demo is specialised for only one piece of hardware? Epic makes multiplatform Engines.the most radically interesting Part of the Demo is Software rasterised triangles and amazing LOD, which is something completely different than before.
