UK PS2 sales triple

Sales of the PlayStation 2 have tripled since the launch of the new slimmed down model, ChartTrack latest hardware sales figures have revealed.

The new ultra-slimline model went on sale last week, and almost 50,000 units were snapped up immediately - more than triple the number sold the week before, with stocks of the original model having been in short supply for some time. It is believed Sony isn't far off breaking the seven million barrier for its UK installed base - an incredible number achieved in less than a four year period.

As a result of last week's sales spike, sales of the Sony console powered ahead of the Xbox, selling well over double that of the Microsoft machine in the last seven days, which nevertheless still saw its own sales rise by seven per cent - but not enough to outsell the GBA SP, which experienced an impressive 31 per cent sales rise.

Spare a thought for the cheap and cheerful Cube, though, which now finds itself outsold by the PS2 by almost 17 to one, although over the course of this year the figure is closer to six to one.

As for the poor old N-Gage, don't even ask. Three figure sales would represent a good week for the Nokia Game 'deck'. And before you ask, I use the QD myself, so I don't have vested interest in its utter failure to sell anything at all. It's just not really providing much business for games stores is it?

Yeah its selling well. I saw a couple of people buying it the other day.

I also saw 4 people, within an hour in my friends game shop, swapping there PS2 + £45 for a slimeline version. Made me wonder WTF some people have in their heads (nothing is my guess)

The PS2 has gone through a lot of revisions. Depending on the model they are swapping, they end up with something with less noise, less heat, less wind from the power unit, less power consumption, and takes up less precious space.

I've had experience with a 30K and 50K model. The differences about noise, heat, and air flow are very obvious - it is difficult not to notice them! And it was reassuring to know that the 50K model was drawing less than half(if I recall correctly) of the electricity the 30K model was drawing.

Obviously with the PStwo, all the noise, heat, air flow, power issues may well have just 'graduated' to become nearly non-existant.

First of all, I don't see why this should even be a surprise. It was bound to happen.

This slim-down PStwo comes with an internal ethernet adapter, allowing online gaming right out of the box. That's probably why a lot of people are so quick to trade in their dated models.

Nintendo really needs to fuel their console with new IP. Thus far I've only seen Doshin the Gaint and Pikmin as new franchises, wouldn't it be a smart move for Nintendo to invest in 'new games' as well?

Why do I never see Nintendo making a big budget RPG on console?

because they have their gameboy chicken with the golden (let me say diamond) eggs

I have been saying this for some time, but customers are not interested in grand games with higher-quality graphics and sound and epic stories. - Hiroshi Yamauchi

They don't do this kind of games because YOU don't want that kind of games to be made.
Yep, you thought you wanted big budget RPG à la FF/DQ, but in reality in your inner self that's not what you're asking for, Yamauchi knows you better than you do!

I will bet good money that a large percentage of these sales are PS2 replacements.

Does your crystal ball tell you that?

I'm still waiting for an answer, by the way, does anyone know which shops do the PS2 swap thing?

Quite a few may be buying it just to play GTA:SA

Just as several people are buying their second XBOX to play HALO2 on LIVE

Why would someone do such a stupid thing?

I have a friend who has a plasma screen in every room in his house. He has one in his wardrobe (walk in wardrobe...)... So that he can watch TV while he's getting dressed.
People do the strangest things.

MS has a new technique to discover modded Xbox on Live, even when the modchip is off.
"A lot" of persons have been banned this way lately.
Hence people have to either buy a new Xbox for live gaming only, or they have to start forgeting about Live or the modchip, one of them.
They can of course take chances and go live and try to remain unnoticed, since the new banning system isn't "clear" for the moment.

There's a thread about it at Xbox Scene, if someone is curious about this subject.
