UK : PlayStation 3 enjoys record pre-orders

First there was XB360 and they got so many preorders. Than Wii and that got the most preorders. Then PS3 that beat that figure. Unless you think this info is an outright lie, the fact Wii did well before PS3 means nothing.

You haven't read the quote very thoroughly have you?

Online retailer Play.com is taking six times more pre-orders than it received for PlayStation 3 than Xbox 360 - and 15 times more than the Nintendo Wii.

Get it now?

As your your friends wanting 'true HD' well it sounds as though they've already bit on the Sony PR hook line and sinker, so have probably made up their minds already regardless, there is no such thing as 'true' HD.
"True HD" is a label, at least here in the UK (and EU?) that stands for 1080p native resolution I believe. it's not an official standard definied by the HDTV commitee ot what-have-you, but it is a label that educated consumers may be looking out for. "True HD" stuck on the screen means you're getting a 1920x1080 display. Lack of that means you're getting any HD resolution. Thus a "True HD" label on a console will tie it in with the 1080p crowd.

The solution is for MS to stick "True HD" labels on XB360, if it's not a standard that they need ratifying.

Isn't it called Full HD? not that it really makes any difference, but nitpicking is fun.
I've seen True HD used. Full HD is likely similar. As there's no standard, companies are free to use whatever marketting term they think is best.

I thought Europe uses the term TrueHD while Japan & US sticks to FullHD. Much like HiDef and HighVision.

Well in Finland every store label has Full HD if the TV supports 1080p. Come to think of if, I have never seen it called anything other than Full HD or just 1080p in Finland in any relation.

edit: Ok maybe I generalised this a bit. The Full HD signs are not everywhere in Finland, but it is quite common when ever 1080p TVs are present.

I think the most prevelant label is "HD Ready" as its the term that specify support of HD standards. "HD Ready" HDTVs must have the minimal functionality required by EICTA (European Information, Communications and Consumer Electronics Technology Industry Associations. The public is probably more educated on the term on "HD Ready" than it is on "1080p", "HDMI" or "HDCP". "TrueHD" or "FullHD" are just marketing labels and their use are probably at the full discretion of the manufacturers.

The PS3's preorder numbers are probably more indicative of its heritage than some buzz words more readily known by enthuiasts than the general public. Thus, the PS3 won't sale more units because of some "TruHD" or "Full HD", the most important label is the brand label "Playstation".

I agree, HD ready is what everyone is looking for and the way that manufacturers let know that their TV is offering HD. And indeed, none of the HD crap matters as much as it saying Playstation on the console...

i personally want "true hd" to disappear from this world. 720p is still a proper hd, and calling 1080p as true hd makes me to feel 720p as "fake hd", even though 720p is sweat spot this generation. i wonder how they are gonna call 1440p as??? "true full HD"??? just my stupid imaginations

I believe the term "True HD" was derived because of the many 1080i HDTV's out there. It wasnt so much a battle between 720p and 1080p afaic. I havent heard anyone say 720p as "fake hd" yet, rather its 1080i that gets that term labeled to it.

TrueHD is a trademark for a Dolby audio solution.

Full HD is a trademark for Sony's 1080p implementation.

Maybe MS needs to market their 1080p capabilities a little better, but I'm inclined to think the vast majority of people who really care about such a thing would be aware that both consoles support it. MS needs to better market its product and updated features. As regarding if people care of 1080p or not, then I am inclined to say they do as when people purchase TVs with 1080p capability, they'll want most if not all content to display this resolution to take advantage of their investment.

Which is rather ironic, as most content is produced at 720p and will look better on a 720p native set...

MS sealed their own fate with this 1080p business. The average consumer isn't going to believe the 360 can really do it because of all the guff coming out of the various MS outlets when Sony were bragging about 1080p.

"Not needed" "No games in 1080p" etc.etc.

which they don't need to, most people will be happy with 720p display. now i want to see sony proving why everyone in the world needs 1080p display.

Well, you don't "need" a 720 display either.

i was talking in terms of HD experience. both parties have been talking about HD for sure, but i personally believe 720p is sweet spot when i compromise costs and level of enjoy i get :)

Actually most games [out] at the moment are not even native 720p, so should we stick with SD?

While we don’t have the majority of games produced at 1080p, but as a consumer do you purchase only 720p only sets due to your reason?

No one here can guarantee 1080p will NOT be the dominant resolution in the future in the HD space.

HD contents and HD TVs fuel each other. As such more 1080p content being release, consumers will want to have the screen to get the best picture quality, thus will want consoles to do the same.

You have complete rights to that opinion of yours, but if you have a chance, go to a TV store and have a 720p & 1080p set running side by side at the same size and content.

Higher resolution still means more to some than others.
