Two years LTTP: Help me catch up on essential PS3 experiences

Well I got to throw in my obligatory nod for Folklore, it's hard to find now though, and with R&C CiT and Uncharted 2 coming out soon both of their first offerings are certainly worth it.

Thank you all for the generous tips. My wallet however hates you all. As an update, so far I've picked up Siren and Ratchet and Clank: ToD for very low prices thanks to Play-Asia's 20% off Visa sale ($AUD30 and $AUD20 respectively - bliss!). Patsu, that link you provided was great!

In terms of what I like and dislike, I tend to grossly dislike driving and sports games. Anything else is fair game, especially RPG's. Anything a little bit kooky always gets my attention, especially if the art style is exceptional. I don't think Motorstorm is going to be my cup of tea.

Shifty, I think you've hit the nail on the head in terms of what I'm after in terms of getting a feel for the "brand-defining" console experience. I want to pick up LBP and Uncharted, too - is there anything exceptional about the GOTY version of LBP that means I should hold off?

I've actually spent all my time playing Wipeout more than anything else. I won't be picking up the expansion until I finish it - so again thanks for the tip. My girlfriend player Flower for an hour and said it was a bizarre and worthwhile experience. Killzone didn't grab me at all, but I'll give it a better go once I am released from Wipeout's firm grip.

My "on the horizon" list is now:

Retail:

  • Valkyria Chronicles (on order)
  • Siren: Blood Curse (on order)
  • R+C:ToD (on order)
  • Resistance 1 and 2
  • Uncharted
  • LBP
  • infamous (eventually, not too enthused on what I've seen)
PSN:

  • Pixeljunk Eden and Monsters
  • Noby Noby Boy (maybe)
  • Possibly Fat Princess though I can't really see the appeal from videos that are floating around.
I'm a bit concerned about getting overwhelmed however - I don't want to buy 10 games and touch the surface of them. Hope you're all adding me to PSN, too!

[*]infamous (eventually, not too enthused on what I've seen)

Blasphemy! :) Definitely try inFamous if you can, the actual game is somewhat better than the demo. It's one of the better games out there, with good replayability and an engaging story that doesn't really come across in the demo.

PixelJunk Eden <- very nice game, definitely worth the asking price though can initially be a little frustrating (you can fall down very, very far initially ;) ).

You should try the coop instead, it's best ever for me. Personal GOTY last year. :)

Exactly.

Well, save Pacific Rift for when you're done with Wipeout. I'm still convinced that once you're done with Wipeout, Motorstorm 2 can satisfy that same feeling. I liked both a lot, but like Motorstorm just that little bit better because the environments are much more interactive, pretty and everything about the game is so very physical. It's really awesome, and you can't miss it. It's also a great game to let other people play even if they've never played any game before - just turn on sixaxis controls and they'll figure it out. By the way, there's a trophy in Wipeout for winning a race using full sixaxis control, so at least try it once - d-pad is still by far the easiest way to play though unfortunately. I agree that an online option for limiting to sixaxis control method would be neat, because I feel it's much more fun using the sixaxis (more next-gen if you will).

Or better, get a HD version at http://www.gamersyde.com/news_motorstorm_pr_gameplay_videos-7363_en.html ... the game's quality is hard to convey over youtube. ;) Gameplay #3 is one of my favorite tracks, visually. F@#$, I just watched it again (just the small streamed version is good enough) and I still absolutely love it. Some of the best graphics and gameplay this gen, still. MS2 is insanely underrated.

And yes, I sometimes forget, but PJ Eden has up to four player co-op, which is pretty cool. You even have a trophy for three players where two players are throwing a third back and forth.

Yes, Pixel junk Eden is a blast ! The trance of colours and music is mesmerising :)! The latest patch brings down the difficulty a little too, making it more fun !

Cool... let me know how Siren works out for you. I have not tried it yet despite fierce recommendations.

Take your time ! The list is not supposed to be an informercial. I myself have not tried all the games in the GAF list.

Scanning through the list above... no MGS4 ? I prefer MGS4 ahead of inFamous myself. ^_^

Is it true LBP GOTY is only for North America? I can import but I'd like to pick up a copy today if possible

I've always found MGS to be a bit wanky. Sean Elliott's podcasting and blogging about the game perfectly summarises my feelings about it, so I'm not really interested in it, given it appears to be closer to a cult than a game you can pick up and enjoy. ;)

If you haven't played any version of it already, I recommend "Ninja Gaiden: Sigma." The PS3's version is definitely the definitive one.

Spoke to Tanod over XMB the other day. He was all over "Ninja Gaiden: Sigma". I'm waiting for the second title. Is the first title discounted now ?

I was able to pick it up at Gamestop for 20 bucks, so yeah it's much cheaper than its release at $60. Wonderful game, I loved Itagaki's quote about how in most games, the enemies are there for you to kill, but in Ninja Gaiden, the enemies are there to kill you!

Hello,

like your list, but I think you are right, don't buy too much at once, take your time :) .

Will send you an friend invite today...

BTW, another retailer where you could get games much cheaper (buying from there since about two years and can only say the best about them, unfortunately it takes some time that the orders get to my country and I think some import multiplayer games tend to connect to games overseas which is not good for the lag, but I have yet to confirm that this is really the issue :) ):

Don't know how the conversion ratio from CAD to AUD is, though...

Enjoy!

Cheers...

There's a demo on PSN ... (it didn't sell me on the game by the way)

Some of these great games are now available in the Platinum range:

I have a question, that is slightly off-topic, but I'd need an answer:
I have the full-price Motor Storm 2, the disc is slightly damaged (a small crak on the inside of the disc) and loads slowly, it works well after it's loaded but I'm a bit conserned to put it in my PS3 because I'm afraid it might shatter inside the machine while spinning.
Now the question: If I buy the Platinum version of the game, will my old save games still work?

You could probably have it replaced for free if you contact Sony, because after all we can't make backups. ;)

Yeah, I contacted the distributor (Nordisk Film), and they said they won't replace it, but I'd have to try with the shop I bought it from. Too bad I don't remember where I bought it from
