I jumped the console train at the first Playstation, bought it near launch.
Didn't really follow the launch closely then, just that much what was in the magazines. Internet was still rare where I lived, I had not seen any forums discussing the consoles then.
PS was my first console, previous platforms had been C64 and Amiga, needed a new gaming platform and because PC's were really too expensive for me then, PS seemed like a good choice.
I remember feeling a bit insecure because I really didn't know if it would succeed, I thought Nintendo's and Sega's could eventually kill the Sony machine, but the amazing 3D graphics draw me in. WipeOut was really the game that made me buy the Playstation.
During PS2 launch I was already a very active console forum follower and I was sure to read every bit of news I could come accross.
PSP and NDS launch I also followed quite actively, though because I ordered my PSP abroad before the official EU launch and after Japan and US launches, I kinda missed the actual launch frenzies. I do like to buy the gear as close to launch as possible, I like being part of the hype
... I'm just shallow like that
This coming gen is as exciting to me as the PS2 launch, though I really have not much interest in other than PS3 and Revolution.
