The Evil Within (Chainsaw Man & Shinji Mikami return)

Loved the game. Bought it on Tuesday. Finished it on Friday. A marvellously inventive and deliciously old-school fever dream of a game. A game with a very distinct directorial stamp on it no less. This isn't some wishy-washy Ubisoft abomination dreamed up by a bunch of boardroom members. This is clearly a game made by the "RE4 guy". Certainly not a game for everyone, but for those who like horror and can't stand the patronizing, one-size-fits-all approach to the genre by companies like Capcom, TEW is pretty much a must.

Sure, it's not a technological marvel, but it's frequently quite stunning regardless (just like IN RE4, the amount of art in TEW is just crazy) . Certainly doesn't run any worse than the likes of Dead Rising 3, Ryse, Thief or PS3 TloU either.

A friend of mine who is also a Silent Hill and RE fan is also swooning over this. Similar sentiments as yours. Saw a lot more FB friends also raving about this , calling it very beautiful and a LOT of fun.

It is quite beautiful indeed. Beautiful in a grotesque Saw-meets-Jacob's Ladder kind of way. Sure, the devs may or may not have had access to the kind of engine or tools which we'd consider bleeding edge, but they did an expert job with what they had. The way lighting is used, dilapidated structures are textured and creatures are created is quite a sight to behold. Granted, there are some rather dated looking sets as well, but it's really not enough to detract from the overall picture.
The framerate picks up significantly once you get past the chapters set in the "RE4 memorial village" too. And for all you haters of cheating, pre-rendered cut-scenes: TEW is entirely real-time all the way through despite featuring some incredibly complex cut-.scene work.

Ok I suppose I have to buy it.

Just started playing the PC edition yesterday, everything maxed out of course... including FOV widescreen correction with 60fps synced. The graphics for the most part are good, nothing mind-blowing, however, the atmosphere, art direction and sound FX make for a wonderful game.

Also, the EG/DF article almost made me believe The Evil Within was a complete mess on the PC... it really isn't. Once you correct the FOV and set fps to 60 (command-line or config.cfg), it really shines.

DF blows even the most minute differences and issues out of proportion. Game runs at a steady 1080p/30 fps - solid. Game drops a couple of frames here and there and a magnifying lense may reveal a missing specular highlight in 1 out of 20000 frames - experience is utterly compromised. Avoid at all costs.

I really like the site for their technical analysis, but I also think the fanboy wars fueling conclusions aren't helping anyone. Just yesterday someone told me the game looked terrible. When I asked him why he told me it was because DF said so. Seriously, but what the fuck.

Did you record frame times out of curiosity ?
I'd be curious to see how well it runs on your system given what DF said about it...

im currently watching this game on youtube. hmm, the view area are sooooo small and the frame-rate is very unstable. the animation also looks stiff, facial, mouth... the main character did not respond to environment (there;s a wall, he did not cling to it, like drake in uncharted).

EDIT:
is it just me or some audio are a copy-paste from skyrim? the wood break, the bottle gulp.

Digital Foundry and Eurogamer exist in a ad-subsidised world and exaggerated exposition alongside the technical analysis will result in more discussion in the comments section and more referrals from sites like this. More eyeballs = more ads = more money.

I know. My point was that people would do themselves a massive disservice by taking their hyperbolic verdicts at face value most of the time.

So at least they fixed the PC version somewhat

Update Notes
Frame lock settings added
In settings, you can now toggle between a 30 FPS and 60 FPS cap.
Letterbox setting
UI toggle to disable the letterbox bars
Fixes gameplay issues when running at >30 FPS
Fixes for visual issues associated with removing letterbox framing
Achievements now work when console is enabled
Fix for game starting in windowed mode on first run
Minor localization fixes

It was on sale on Steam for the last couple of days for $20. Back to $30 now though.

I purchased the game recently and played for a few minutes. The visuals are really disappointing. Its old gen level. And the framerate sucks

Its the problem with ID Tech 5 games, just like Woflenstien. Sometimes they look outtathisworld beautiful, while some areas look last genish due to old shaders.
Some of the areas of Evil Within look fantastic from what I saw at a friend's place, but quite a lot of areas and the characters feel last- gen-ish. I guess the sound design makes up for it.

Didn't realize it was id tech 5, it didn't seem to display those problems immediately like Rage did. Looks like it's modified somewhat compared to Rage and Wolfenstein, I think it looks much better. Performance takes a nose dive because of it though.

Sometimes I think it's visually similar to Resident Evil 4 HD. In fact sometimes I think I'm playing RE4 on a gameplay level too. Heh. Similar games.

The most impressive visual moment I remember was the walk towards the church. Nice outdoor vista. But I haven't gotten much farther than that in the game.

On PC you can use Flawless Widescreen to fix up some problems with FOV and the post process color stuff that screws up black/gamma.

The way it treated resolution and AR is fucking weird. I have a 21:9 monitor. In the setting it doesn't specify AR but it detected the full resolution. At my native res with the letterbox it had the side cutoff as if I was playing 16:9 with the top/bottom cut off as well in a big way over doing the letterboxing. It was like watching a widescreen output on an SD feed on cable TV. If I specified 1080p it would stretch it to the full width of my 21:9 display and everything would be in fat-mode. Normally if I set a game to 1080p, it simply doesn't display anything either side, the 16:9 display is in the middle.
