Too, everytime new screenshots come out, Che posts about how such-and-such a system just came online and it makes the game look so much better than the pictures indicate. Well, fine, whatever, but how the HECK can they claim 4x AA at 60 fps when they haven't had these systems online before?
Exactly my question. They had a laundry list of features (60fps at 720p with 4xMSAA, HDR, GI, etc and so forth) so you would think that in the initial stages, or at least before E3 2006 when they announced such, they put the system through the wringer with some test models to make sure their renderer could do all those effects on the targetted models. A couple weeks ago they said they couldn't do this shot or that shot because something was not implimented. Typically you hear things are disabled due to performance (but present in PR shots), but it seems with Turn 10 a lot of this stuff isn't even developed/compatible yet even for still shots.
I am gonna ease up on this game to maintain Scoob's sanity
Only fair seeing as they have *officially* delayed the game as of X06 (I am so behind on news). Not really Turn 10s fault that MS pushed CGI (although it is T10s for claiming they could get close), or that MS gave a release date obviously too short, or have forced early/poor screen shots. This is slipping into 2007 (March) so they have an extra 4 months. Even the new bad screen shots look better than just 2 weeks ago (which makes me ask: How was it not possible to get a still shot 2 or 3 weeks ago with grass, but now they have versions, albeit choppy, with such?)
There is some promise in those shots, but it has a far way to go to live up to the expecations.
That said, are they going to go for a Toca 3 style damage system? I quite liked how Toca had each panel, hood, tire, the engine, gearbox, etc all have their own unique "damage" monitor. e.g. Your car could be great sans the rear bumper you keep trashing, or the left door is dinged up, or the right front tire is getting a little thin because you hit that tire on some gravel on accident, etc...
I ask because the pictures seem to be VERY canned (as Arwin pointed out). e.g. Who scratches the top of the hood?? Maybe that is the dust effect... but I am hoping, like Toca, damage can be part specific... and stuff can even fall off.
Ps- Some of my annoyance with this game is the same with Motorstorm. The screens obviously don't look like the CGI, but I have seen a number of posters here and there who think it either looks like the CGI or... even better
And of course the developers/publishers don't help when they either say the CGI was realtime, inengine or when they say they will get very close to the CGI...
