The best CGI scene in a movie?

Ooooh, the Invisible Man movie with Kevin Bacon for another good one...that CGI scared the bejeebus out of me at the time!

Bad ones are harder. The CGI can be superb, but if it's so over-the-top that it crosses the threshold of believability it just caves in on itself.

The end fight in Blade II comes to mind...or Charlie's Angels Full Throttle. (Demi Moore grabbing Drew Barrymore by the ankle and tossing her about 12 feet comes instantly to mind... )

Episode II was way worse than Episode I.

And I couldn't watch full throttle all the way through, even on cable.

It was just that bad.

There's that ropey bit near the end of Die Another Day when bond surfs a tidal wave. Shocking.

The Ping-Pong match in Forrest Gump, for the pure simple seamlessnes of it. :)
And if we a talking aesthetics, Tron is definitely still my all time favourite. No really!
Generally I think CG is way overrated. It's not nearly believable enough yet, that it can be used to the extent that it is.
Generally the main problem is kinetics, that are just WAY off at times.
It probably has to do with the fact that most animation is still being done "by hand", by a classically trained animator. Movement that might look splendid with a flat stylised 2d character will almost certainly look terrible on a bulging, heavy looking, and realistic 3d model. Also the lighting sometimes is surprisingly poorly synchronized with the scene it is supposed to be a part of, even in big productions.

Escape from LA, 'nuff said. :?

Escape from LA and Ghosts of Mars never existed, they're pure mental virtual projections due to an excess of sugar in your pancreas.

John Carpenter movies rocks... ALL of them rocks... All resistance to this simple fact is futile...

:| ;)

Edit: The best CGI i saw in a movie must be, to be original, the T1000 from T2:Judgement Day and the T-Rex under the rain from Jurassic Park.
And the best full CGI movie i saw was FF:TSW, and, i know it's not a movie, the intro of Onimusha 3 on PS2, intro made by ROBOT, astonishing stuff.

Still T2 for me.

Edit - since we're talking scenes, all the T-1000 liquid metal bits. Can't remember any CGI scene that's wowed me as much since.

Agree. I was wowed when I first saw them, and I was even more impressed when watching the Ultimate Edition DVD. No special effects from that time have aged as fine as these.

how is that cgi? it was all wire work from the looks of it.

epic

I was amazed when I saw Dino Crisis (PS1) opening FMV, PS1 was my first true console and DC was my first game. :)

Otherwise, JP has some Astonishing CGI work for its time.

Woo-hoo!

So it's also safe to mention the killer CGI in Van Helsing? :| The wives of Dracula changing into vamps was just superb, you couldn't really tell where the CGI ended and the real actor started...the highest compliment I can give a CGI job.

I'm quite scared of renting that movie... After all i've heard of it... Wouldn't want my brain to start coming out of my ears at one point...

The story doesn't really matter in a movie like this. It's quite fun if you don't expect some high-class art but rather a comic-like flick.

Now look at >>>THIS<<< piece of art! Most of you surely know it already, but it never ceases to amaze me... 8)
Amazing, but it's old and the same "style/technique" has been used (see: copied) in a commercial. Not sure which one at the moment...

I do think that the original is MUCH better, in the commercial it's very evident that there's people around. The black background on the original makes it much more... errr... realistic? if u know what i mean... It's still evident, but not THAT much... Oh and the original is much funnier :D

And it was probably only a low res reflection map. :?

I'd like to put a vote in for the calculation of the water/mud at the start of Shrek where he's taking a bath in the swamp. IIRC, there's a Siggraph paper describing the techniques.

Yes, it looked cool and all, but now it just shows what it really was at the time. Probably just an environment map, not even a real reflection, but maybe i'm just being very pessimistic.

On topic, I must say that the scenes in the Hulk when he's in the desert and fights with the tanks left me very wowed. When he's throwing them around like toys, you can see that it's not actually THAT easy for him, but pure brute force and strength really stood out...

And thanks to the motion captures of Ang Lee acting ablilities, it looked photorealistic... ;)

Oh fuck off PC-Engine, go back to the Console Forum. This is a fun place to be in, we don't need your negativity. :D
