The best CGI scene in a movie?

Still T2 for me.

Edit - since we're talking scenes, all the T-1000 liquid metal bits. Can't remember any CGI scene that's wowed me as much since.

Jurassic Park for its time was the most impressive use of CGI in a film, IMO.

I think most of the wow effect came because it was the first time CGI look THAT good.
I think the Lord of the Rings trilogy, especially some of the battle scenes in ROTK, Gollum and some of the landscapes were a huge wow, considering it's quite recent and my eyes are quite critical nowadays.

Woo-hoo!

So it's also safe to mention the killer CGI in Van Helsing? :| The wives of Dracula changing into vamps was just superb, you couldn't really tell where the CGI ended and the real actor started...the highest compliment I can give a CGI job.

I'm quite scared of renting that movie... After all i've heard of it... Wouldn't want my brain to start coming out of my ears at one point...

And i think Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within should be mentioned.

Some of the scenes in The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions were wow-y... Shame about the movies...

I agree with John. As for Mufu and his T2, although the liquid metal thingy was impressive, it looked artificial to me -- too "wooden", although it was supposed to be liquid metal :) (and I don't mean this after repeated views, I mean the first time I saw it). The dinos were absolutely believable and I can't remember any other time where I was as astonished as I was when I saw the dinos for the first time. I suppose this has to do with what John also said (timeframe and tech improvements and creativity).

Couldn't help but be impressed with the Matrix trilogy as well. The dock scenes in Revolutions are mental.

I remember being very impresed with the CGI in Black Hawk Down too - it doesn't really hold up to close scrutiny, but most people don't actually consider that a huge number of scenes are composites until they watch the extras. A nice example of CGI not getting in the way.

Bet you weren't 11 years old when you first watched it!

And i must say that i really enjoyed some of the special effects in the Harry Potter films. I actually jumped up saying "oh my god that's so cool!!" but i think it was due to the fact that i saw someone magically turning something into whatever, rather than on the technical side of it...

I would of mentioend The Matrix but it's only pseudo-CG :) in the first one anyway. I won't mention the second and third..

I forgot to mention The Freightners! I was impressed with the visuals in that one, especially the Death mirror scene, and when it slides in and along the walls.

LOL.

Worst movie relative to its CGI quality? What d'ya reckon? A.I. maybe? AVP? Episode I? Matrix parts 2 & 3? Must admit, I quite enjoyed all of those and the CGI had a lot to do with it.
