Hooking a system call at runtime isn't necessarily nefarious. Steam probably does that a lot to implement their anti-cheating, in-game friends overlays and whatnot.

Kernel32.dll is unchanged, kernel32 functions linked by any other process are unchanged ... woopdefucking doo.

The summer sales are on, and Steam is constantly crashed.

Good thing I already made most of my yearly purchases through GreenManGaming and GetGamesGo.

I've never had a single issue with Steam in 10 years on any of my generations of PC's.

At work and just bought the first of probably a number of games/dlc for the summer sale. My SQL for Steam:

SELECT id FROM games LEFT JOIN wishlist ON games.id = wishlist.gameid WHERE games.price <= 9.99 OR games.discount >= 0.75

No crazy deals right now on anything major. Doesn't look to be any publisher packs this time around either.

The store's inaccessible for me right now and has been that way for around two hours. Well, I checked twice in as many hours; it might have worked inbetween those two instances, I just don't know. :D

A new Steam update is probably causing some of the delay.

The store works but I have no fucking clue what is worth buying (a second countestrike instance maybe, and that 59 cent game I saw). It's the Linux section, mind you ;)

I'm going to buy Call of Juarez Gunslinger as I like the whole series and it's one of very few westerny games around.

I said I'm going to, because I can't at the moment as the store is not working :p

DA: Origins Ultimate Ed for $9 is a great deal if you've never played the game. I *might* get Gunslinger for $10, I enjoyed the demo quite a bit.

then why was a dll named gameover.dll being triggered by the code injected into it? It was specifically triggering whenever trainers were being used by any game launched through steam(Even when they were just using Steam as a launching program and not games bought through steam).

Steam was crashing games that had trainers applied to them. Any game, regardless of if it was multiplayer or not. I'd link to a thread on Steam's forums with more folks talking about this, but Steam deleted it.

Valve tried to put this into Steam to prevent DOTA 2 from being exploited(Dota 2 came out a day after this), got caught and quickly reversed the change. I'm just amazed the news about it didn't spread to more places.

I still don't see the issue with what they were doing. How is it detrimental to anyone other than cheaters, hackers and pirates?

Cheating in and hacking (i.e. modding) single player games has always been done, and sometimes for a quite legitimate reason : not wanting to spend hours on that unbeatable mission, like the race track in Mafia, or playing a game again and skipping to the interesting part rather than spend boring hours on tutorials, custscenes and worthless introductory levels.

It's like being kicked out of Doom or Doom 2 because you've typed IDKFA or IDSPISPOD. A bit harsh and unexpected. At least people were not banned with all their games stolen away from them, lol.

Valve must be losing out on a fortune with these server issues. I'm constantly getting a credit card declined error, anyone else?

I don't get how that is in opposition with my statement ...

"Kernel32.dll is unchanged, kernel32 functions linked by any other process are unchanged ... woopdefucking doo."

As for stopping modification of single player games/modes, sure that's wrong ... but you are presenting the approach as somehow inherently reprehensible, which is silly. Lets say they wanted to do this for DOTA2 alone, what the fuck would be wrong with that?
