Sony loser of Leipzig according to someones site

While i normally respect that site i call bullshit on that piece.

http://1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3153167

The main point is even wrong, there wasn´t any 12 month deal, it looks to be a freebie for Microsoft since Konami never planned to release anytihing on the PS3 anyway.

I couldn´t help but thinking the only ones that was pissed of by Sony was the Jounalists on those websites :)

I could be wrong, but i have the distinct feeling that Sony since the 2005 E3 has gone out of their way not to do anything "positive". It seems to me they are building momentum to go ahead with massive information overflow aka Shock and Awe(?).

What you say?

TGS is much more important for Sony, is a strategic step before launching Ps3, it is so simple.
At Leipzig Games Convention there isn't any Ps3 playable demo.

Sony may feel TGS is more important to them, but their own sales statistics say they should be far more concerned about Europe than Japan at this point. Europe is a much larger market than Japan, and one that Sony has a less-firm grasp on

It's probably a combination of factors:

* For large exercise like this, all the dates and venue would have been planned out 6 months to 1+ years ago. Their first focus would be the 11th Nov Japan launch, followed by rest of the world (17th Nov). It is conceivable that TGS becomes their first launchpad.

* They may want to give ample time to the development teams and partners to prepare for this round of announcements (i.e., hands on in Japan). This means Japanese language collaterals, game demos, speakers, Japan network infrastructure support, coordinating 100s and 1000s of people, ... So if GC is deemed too close to TGS, it may be skipped to avoid confusion amongst all the people involved. There is always too little time, too much work.

* Following TGS, there should be a series of post launch activities (and all sorts of contingancy plans). Those take time to prepare too. It may be more important to sustain the post launch buzz and follow through, rather than a pre-launch, "ad-hoc" media update (Everyone knows what a Playstation is anyway).

* For GC, they could have some paper announcements... but those may not be loud enough against MS and Nintendo combined. They would have wasted their newsworthiness (e.g., MS's faked exclusive announcements could have disrupted interesting PS3 news).

* They should also save money for other more impactful and valuable exercises. Marketing expenses are typically wasteful (ROI can be as low as %0.5). PR is not necessarily the most important thing at this point. Everything directly related to the customer values and user buying experiences are.

* In general, it's more difficult for Sony to coordinate an offensive at this point because the supply lines, and the frontlines are being fortified. 5+ years of hard work, multi-billion dollar investment will make or break people soon. Expect last minute scrambles and rude awakenings ;-)

I would assume it is completely opposite for Sony. Japan is what they should be worried about, there are no real indications that they won't retain dominant leadership in Europe while in Japan Nintendo is now a real threat.

Out of the three major regions Europe still seems to be Sony country. The price of the machine is certainly not overly shocking to many Europeans.

As one pointed out in the first reply in this thread the PS2 is still going like the clappers in Europe. They are doing great in Europe, while in Japan PS2 is in sharp decline with the DS re-igniting a passion for gaming amongst many Japanese who had stopped playing - the reason for it's crazy sales numbers.

Sony seems to be facing a battle against Microsoft in North America, a battle against Nintendo in Japan and probably a much reduced threat from both in Europe. Christmas 2007 will reveal all.

On the issue of the conventions themselves, I would hazard a guess that TGS is far more important globally than Leipzig has been, certainly amongst the specialist press. Leipzig is open to the public, which would explain its numbers relative to old E3 but is TGS open to the public too?

I don't think Leipzig is as important media and PR-wise as E3 and TGS.
I personally don't think I've ever even heard of the Leipzig games convention until this years event.
Doers anyone remember last years LGC?? I do remember E3 2005 and TGS 2005, but have no memory at all what MS, Sony and Nintendo showed at LGC 2005 :???:

Besides, since the news of downgrading the E3, many it was told the shift would be towards more focused, smaller PR events. Seems Sony among others are going to unveil the major news from now on at more private, controlled events

Sony didnt have much Presence at GC which is the biggest such event in europe. So we cant say they won it. GC is really an event for European publishers to show of their ware.

MS announced the 360s price at FGC. Sony did their usual "hold back till TGS " thing. I don`t care about Nintendo, so I don`t remember that.

All right, let's get back on topic. I fixed the thread title for you, let me know through pm if you ish me to change it back.

Ironically, I read what I assume is your "fixed" title in the RSS feed, and only clicked on it to see if Leipzig was getting some humorous love from The Onion. ^^;;

ultmiatly does it really where its held, sure 150,000 saw it but thats less 0.2% of germany's population.
nowadays with the internet etc whats important is press coverage + that would still be the same if it was shown in tibet ( actually youll prolly have more if it was shown there )

dont know if its the right stratagy by sony though ( i have to admit its made me more curious about the ps3 secret )
well find out middle next year i expect when we find out how's the first to reach 10mil sold

GC Leipzig 2006: 183.000 attendants Austrian media report (German)

I agree, its importance will grow after the "this is end of the E3 as you know it" announcement. Personally I think it's kind of ironic that after the E3 effectively killed of the CES (spring; Las Vegas) and the ECTS (autumn; London) with its gigantism the organisators are saying: "it grew too big, we need to go back to smaller events spread over the entire year"....

Is it just me, or was there a definite homerism flavor to that blast? "They dissed my continent, man; THEY SHALL PAY."
