Screen grab of the nextgen Madden football.

Actually, they talked about field degradation and dynamic weather at the start of this generation.

The hard drive in the Xbox was suppose to allow divots or gouges in turf to be stored and displayed in later stages of a game.

I don't believe Madden ever implemented this. Maybe VC or the Fever teams did?

The problem is, the only way you could get to special effects like that is by having more memory, more processing power, and a really fun playing football game.

Alot of people put the wrong things ahead of the important stuff. Without a fun playing (or well selling) football game, you'll never have the opportunity to add in effects like this. It's in iterative process that is fueld by the money the game brings in. If the game sells poorly you can't afford to concentrate on stuff like that.

Did you see those pictures of football games on xbox already? it's a night and day difference.
is it?

i'm not saying there is a difference. there is. all i'm saying is that there isn't really anything new going on in these shots. it's the same features we saw this gen only all at the same time (normal maps, DoF, per pixel ligting ect) and higher resolution.

Now taking that into account, I've said this before... Don't expect anything better then what you've seen in unreal 3 to appear on any of the next gen consoles. You'll get that quality level (from some games) but not much above that.

Given that Unreal3 has been demoed on a 6600GT and today's CPUs, I don't buy it. UE3's lighting still leaves alot to be designed (too shiny, poor ambient/diffuse) One could make a level that looks alot better than UE3's simply by using light probes.

see colon thats the problem. If you are making a game with lets say 100 times more power shouldn't I get that game with 3D sidelines and realistic weather. Some of you are thinking inside the box. Its the risk takers that change the way videogaming is played. In 1997 people had the attitude of "Why would I want to play somebody on a home console in another state? I have friends if I want to play another person." It took people to take risk to make internet gaming happen. Hell we still have people today that don't really see the importance of gaming on the internet.

Obviously fun gameplay is needed first, but you just can't stop there. Everything that can be thought of then implemeted in a timely manner should be added to the game. It's always the little graphical touches that makes a certain game look better.

If we could get dirt to stick on football player's pants this gen why can't we get snow to stick in cracks of helmets? Its not that hard. In the last Mortal Kombat they had free flowing blood dripping down the characters bodies. Realtime snow and mud shouldn't be a problem next-gen right?

Are you guys thinking about the same next-gen systems that I'm thinking about? Madden 2007 for PS3 should look way better than Madden 2006 for PS2. So what's wrong with my request.

Sports games in general have not pushed the envelope as far as graphics goes.

Well the only exception might be some racing/driving games.

EA is going to make a jump with this new engine but then they probably won't change that engine until the next generation. Their business model is annual releases so it's unlikely they would build a new engine and integrate new features in a less than 12-month cycle.

Then again, maybe with no competition, they might be more willing to take risks? That is, they may have been unwilling to make drastic changes to the engine because they had a highly-successful product. Why risk coming out with New Coke when the original formula is the market leader?

yeah, that's exactly the point that i'm making. all we're seeing in these shots is what we've already seen with nicer looking players and some nice full screen filters.

have you seen the newest crop of baseball games? they are quite nice looking. especialy the 2k sports one. it has normal mapped characters complete with self shadowing.

Checkout the crowd in this MLB 2K5 screenshot. Why can't 75% or more of the crowd look like this in Madden 2007?

Are you looking at Madden 2007 or 2006 for that matter while checking a close up shot of the stands? The answer is an obvious "NO".

Tha'ts a close up shot, it's far easier to get away with 3D everythign in a close up shot.

Aren't light probes sampled from realworld locations? If so, how useful would they be when you're not trying to replicate the environment you sampled from? If you're trying to recreate a Martian environment, wouldn't you have to use a light probe on Mars?

Well, if its not going to get better than Unreal 3, whats the point.

Color me unimpressed if true.

The Unreal Engine is nice but it doesn't have the legs to last even 2 years IMO.

Way over hyped.

Well, you can get away with creating light probes using high-end renderers. It doesn't have to be your own tool or anything... But you might as well use roughly the same tool to create your skydome/skybox textures. As long as the result is HDR. Mars photographs exist, but it may be problematic getting HDR out of it or getting the same image at several f-stops so that you could at least construct a light probe.

In any case, the point is that you can fake a decent light probe since it's a completely offline thing. And there are artists out there who are really skilled at making convincing environmental probes given an unlimited supply of polygons.

Now lets do this again (from months back). How many of you guys think that the following screenshots are real? Remember before you answer your post will be saved in the forums forever.

I for one think they are all real. Watch. ;)

Vaan you'll see EA WILL deliver with its next-gen games. (Graphics wise anyway)

The first two aren't. I've had those confirmed as concept renders.

Pic #2, Next-Gen Madden, looks very similar to the shots on the EA Sports site. If the above shot is a render, as your sources state, then it appears that there is a good chance that the new shots are also renders. The question then would be: How similar are the concept renders to what we will see in game?
