Rock Band & Guitar Hero Games

So this game has been moved to my back burner recently, but, wanted to add a couple of notes!

First, RB2 feels like what RB1 COULD of been. All the little things that were left out, forgotten, etc in RB1 have been fixed. The interface is better, cleaner and faster. In picking songs you can now see each individual instruments difficulty level, without going in to the Music Store to see it. You can of course drop people in and out of your current band doing the World Tour, instead of being stuck with static members.

I am only about 20-25 songs in, so far. Personally, the track selection to me hasn't been quite as hot as the first one, but being as you not only have access to all your DLC, but if you paid the $5 and exported all the songs from RB1, you have them all available to you. Which is HUGE. In playing quick play, and going through songs randomly, I have found they have greatly improved the randomizer. In RB1 you it would always tend to bring up the same songs, while never bring up some. Issue resolved.

Haven't played online yet with anyone, but that portion appears to be greatly improved as well.

Plus only have to spend the $60 for the game, and still use my instruments from RB1 was ideal as well.

I also wanted to note you Euros will be able to get in on the fun for the 360 as of 11/14. No word on PS3 launch date yet.

Also announced today, from Harmonix and Apple Corps will be a stand alone Rock Band game licensed for the Beatles. This is pretty huge. The first time that any of their tracks have been digitally licensed. While I'm a little dissapointed it won't be DLC for Rock Band, knowing that your current RB instruments will be compatible lessons the blow some.

mm... I may not have played RB1, but I do agree with you that the UI is quite polished. The in-game stage effects are pretty awesome. I've only played single player since I got the game, but so far I have no complaints. I'm not sure if it's universally true, but it seems the game selects proper male/female characters as the singer if the player doesn't set one, which I thought was kinda neat (doesn't work with setlists of course).

Most of the music is new to me; the only ones I know would have been in a movie or TV series at some point e.g. Eye of the Tiger (Rocky), Bad Reputation (Shrek), American Woman (Austin Powers 2). I'm fairly open to new music types, but the Impossible set list probably has the fewest number of songs that I like.

I also bought a bunch of point cards for XBLM, and grabbed quite a few songs. I like how they can be used in Band Tour for random or custom lists. :)

Right now I'm just raking in the cash and fans for buying stuff. Instruments are so expensive. :(

Borrow a copy of RB1 from someone (or rent it). Then spend the $5 to transfer all the RB1 songs into RB2. Well worth it. Great songs on RB1.

mm... I was thinking of renting it just to do that! (I'm a bit fickle about borrowing games :p) I have played a bit of RB1 before, but only on a few occasions, so I've forgotten the songs; my friend did say that the song used for the CSI: Miami theme was in the game, so I'm looking forward to that. :D

I finally got both RB2 and GH4.. Here are some notes:

RB2
Amazing software: all three game modes are great. Forming one band and allowing ppl to jump in later or take the band to online simplifies things. Tour mode is more accessible now. Challanges makes the game like Forza2. Battle of bands is a nice touch. The online marketplace is amazing. I wish the preview is automatic, but I can live that.. I do not know what Harmonix guys can add more in terms of gameplay afterwards.
Hardware: I do not have the RB2 set, but hardware is always the weak point of RB series. Compatiblity with RB1 and GH4 is a plus (yes all Gh4 periperials works perfectly with RB2)
Set List: 84 songs make it possible to not play the same song twice (almost) in the tour mode. That was major bothering thing in RB1. The song selection is on the light side. I wish it is a little bit more heavy but hey this is rock band, not heavy metal band :)

I agree RB2 is what RB1 should be. But, now they have a very solid foundation to move forward with this..

GH4:
Software: Big dissapointment after RB1/2. The world tour is just a new packing of the old way of playing (you still play 3-6 songs to complete each gig). But, at least you can skip some of the easier gigs now. On the bright side, there are some new elements in the game mechanics: You have a sixth note in bass (strum without pressing any note), fifth note in the drums which makes huge difference with the raised-cymbals drum, and tapping/sliding modes for the guitar. Sliding is hard to get used to but tapping is great especially during fast solos. If you get past over the lack of good game modes, playing the songs with these new elements are actually more fun.
Hardware: Fantastic.. Red Octane knows what they are doing.. The GH3 guitar was already pretty good, and these guys out do themselves once more.. The touchpad is really a god send especially in fast solos. Drum is much better than that of RB1. It is not only quieter but having two raised cymbals actually gives you a much better feeling of playing a drum. And, yes, they are velocity sensitive. I have not tried mic, but I heard good things about them too.
Set List: Heavier than RB1/2 set list, but slightly lighter than GH3. Have not unlocked all songs, but looking forward to more challanging songs.

So here you go.. If you are not interested about presentation or game modes and type of the guy who just plays in quickplay mode, I would suggest GH4. However, if presentation is important for you, I strongly recommend RB2 (with Gh4 peripherals if possible).

Yeah, I'm greatly tempted to get GH4 full set, and if I find I play that a lot, then will get the RB2 solus once it's out over here for PS3 as well.

If you have neither of them, I suggest you go with GH4, then buy game only RB2 (and borrow RB1 disk from someone). I assume you are gonna buy on PS3, otherwise let me know, we can jam together :)

Interesting post.

GHWT is nice and all but I'm enamoured with Rock Band style and uniqueness, not to mention the lack of DLC for GHWT.

I've dowloaded 5 GB of songs from the RB's Store so I'm going to buy GHWT alone and most probably not the 1st day because Rock Band drew me in immediately and takes up like 95% of my gaming time.

As you already pointed out, Rock Band's presentation is unique. It's all in the small details.....

- The whole band introduction before songs (specially if you created a character with similar features as yourself -or your soulmate, a relative, friend, etc- in real life with the same hair colour, eye colour, hair style, body shape as you).

- The "simple" but truly strategic use of the Overdrive.... Yes, I find that somewhat strategic and I was a avid RTS gamer -mainly Age of Empires- back in the day

- Watching the guitarrist or bassist playing the same notes a real life guitarist or bassist would

- Or the crowd singing along and when you miss a note that kills the buzz they change from singing along to a more generic cheering

- Or seeing the guitarist singing along with the singer while looking at each other in an accomplice way (with a perfect labial synchronization btw)....

- When the screen flashes like the old black and white films, or when the image "splits" in two mirror images (an effect which looks astonishing), etc etc etc etc.

These are the *tiny little* details that separate the good games from the great and incredibly prodigious games like Rock Band.

Other than that, both franchises are infinitely fun.

Also, Red Octane's peripherals are highly reliable. Heck, my old Xplorer guitar from Guitar Hero 2 still works perfect to date.

The mic is free as I use the 360's headset and it works quite well.... I have RB's drums so I'm not that much interested in GHWT drum set, but the addition of one extra cymbal is a welcome one and being able to use the Overdrive whenever you want is good too. In RB I tend to wait for the drummer to activate the Overdrive if I'm a guitarist or bassist.

The 6th note feature is a good addition too, but I'd miss the RB's Bass Groove.

All in all, both games are great but my mind exposes a very strong weakness for Rock Band. :)

This is my plan, which is fairly easy because GH4 is also out sooner. But we'll see what happens! And yeah, it's likely I'll get it on PS3.

If you do that, make sure you have an extra USB hub, that is unless you have open slots to spare on your PS3.

Got through more of those challenges. "Visions" is the worst song I have ever come across in terms of playing. :devilish: I'm also mad because I didn't get the huge amount of cash when I quit an infinity challenge and finished it later (just two songs left) - I only got cash for the two songs ($420) :/ instead of $8000+. Ah well.
