Rift, Vive, and Virtual Reality

So, could be a sign that there is no real market for 1,000+ USD VR headsets outside of niche use cases and/or a sign that interest in VR is cooling with early adopter/high spenders being the first to abandon the market.

Will be interesting to see how Quest 3 will perform at the more budget oriented end of the VR spectrum. That'll give a good idea of whether there's still interest in VR among the general gaming public.

Will also be interesting to see how the Apple VR headset does to see if even Apple can create a market for a 3k+ VR device. One thing to keep in mind that even Apple is only cautiously entering the market with a fairly limited run of headsets. Either to create artificial scarcity to try to create demand and/or just if they are unsure there's a market for the device.

Think it's more likely that the Quest pro simply wasn't enough of an upgrade for most users esp not at $1500 vs the $400-600 of the quest 2. I think this caused a lot of people to just want to wait for a quest 3 which would be more in line with previous quest prices

So it's a rather minimalist launch coming up. Gonna be interesting to see how this goes.

Hmm, never heard of it.

I guess there needs to be a VR Mario or Sonic which would be known to people who may not even have VR kit.

It's an old video but the tokyo game show vr trailer made me think maybe some of you might be interested in watching it. This is the first, there is a 2nd if it was of interest.

Article comparing Quest software sales to that blockbuster success, the WiiU. :)

Hell, it's also comparing the entire VR market to the Wii-U. And they aren't completely wrong. VR still has yet to reach even a fraction of the consumers that VR companies hoped would be drawn to this new way of playing games.

They still don't understand that something like PSVR/Quest/other large headset won't do it. The BSB (smaller and lighter) at a much lower price is the direction they need to be going if they want to have even a small chance of it becoming a mainstream gaming/consumer device.

I think it also needs to not be tethered or need external tracking, the tech aint here yet to get bsb size in a standalone type device, at an affordable price anyway. The quest 3 is a step in the right direction and I guess apple vision is a look at where we should get in a few years at a more mainstream price.

I also don't think gaming is what will push it mainstream, it needs to hit a more general entertainment audience. I would love if I could put my quest/pico/vision etc on and watch sports like I'm standing on the sidelines, or the holy grail for me personally would be being able to watch motorsports from a few different points on a track. I know people who would spend 500+ on a device just to watch 1 race year down here in Aus if it ment they could watch bathurst from trackside positions over the mountain.

I could imagine it would be massive if people could watch the superbowl from the sidelines in VR or Fifa world cup for outside usa.

an interesting missing point in that article would be to try to evaluate the number of Quest 2 buyers who bought it only for PC VR, that's a 100% loss for Meta which sell the headsets at a loss, and won't get any software revenue from those buyers.

Quest 3 isn't moving VR/MR on as 'the next com

Hard not to see Apple absolutely trouncing Meta when the Reality Non-Pro appears. They're actually building the 'best screen you can own/next computing platform' and investing in immersive sports video or whatever you want to call it.

Other than having what looks like compelling XR 'desktop', Apple also have the huge advantage that phone/apps come into that space. Meta are still asking people to choose between their phone and VR. It's a losing proposition.
