If all you wanted was a 360, would you choose PS3's and Wii's launch weekend to go out and buy one? You know there are going to be crowds, lines, outrage and general insanity.

360s could have been bought a few days earlier or a few days later. Making the purchase on the exact same day when all games stores are in total overload is ... err. An interesting idea?

Getting pissed off could also lead to buying a competing brand instead...

That's how my very pro-PS3 friend ended up doing...

He had a pre-order then he found out he wasn't getting one, the day before the launch...

he was customer number 17 apparently, from the 16 PS3's that the local EB in opur area recieved...

out of spite he bought the 360 instead is was quite contented with the purchase...

before that, he was totally dissing my 360...

He doesn't even want to play my PS3...

But like a good friend, I didn't rub it in...

suffice to say, he says he's not going to buy a sony console or shop at EB again...

I know that's quite childish and immature...

but I do wonder if how many of the mainstream would act similarly...

If somebody could give me some idea what large chain stores were getting (say, "my Wal Mart/Best Buy/Gamestop got 70" and so on) I bet I could reasonably extrapolate. Based on 360 and PS3 numbers.

Joystiq claims they MAY have sold a million. I'd guess 300-500,000.

...and that was a week before black friday, I'm willing to bet they sell in the range of 800k - 1.5 mil units by the end of this month.

Edit - nevermind.

All those different sales numbers threads...

No mention of the PS2 which has been beating the 360 hands down for months in the sales charts?

I guess stores must've stopped selling them this weekend due to a large backhander from MS or something.

And no mention of DS which still sells more than even the PS2!!

I'm sure PS2 did ok, but most people shopping for any of the next gen consoles won't settle for a previous generation one. I'd imagine the vast majority of launch day buyers of PS3 already own its predecessor so won't be needing one, however a 360 might not be something they own.

People would still have bought PS2s, of course they would, but they went there looking for a PS2. What people here are wondering is, how many potential PS3/Wii buyers did MS convert to 360 buyers due to shortages?

Then again you could also spin it another way.

"Thousands of people went to the shops to buy the PS3 and Wii consoles, but when they sold out in no time at all, they settled for third best and bought Xbox360's instead, pushing megre Xbox 360 sales to much higher levels than ever seen before".

Seriously though, I wonder if XBox360 was the fastest selling next gen console before or after the PS3s and Wiis sold out.

GOW also pushed those sales quite a bit I would imagine. It's already hit 1 million units sold in just 2 weeks.

This is gamefaqs material right there. There were 2 new console launches,so why wouldn't there be more enthousiasm for these than for a console that has been out a year??What's so funny about that??

Oh and i am sure that MS and the publishers of xbox360 games won't really care about why the 360 and its games will be selling great thia fall.In fact launching first is looking better and better for MS.GTAIV at the same time with the ps3,Capcom a full xbox360 supporter, franchises like splinter cell completely exclusive to the xbox360,hell there' s rumors that Konami will force Kojima to bring MGS4 on the xbox360 and publisher generally delighted with how their games are selling on the 360.

Next fall ,when the ps3 will be at full swing,halo3 and GTAIV will be available for a 299$ console(price of the premium 360 at that time).Somehow i think that MS will have a chance for second winning holiday season but we'll see...

Could it be because they sold out before most people had a chance to buy one?

I acted in kind of a similar way with the Gamecube. I was stoked for it, pre-ordered and anticipating it everyday up to launch. I've owned every Nintendo console since NES, you could even call me an ex-****** of Nintendo. When Rare pushed Starfox Adventures back and Mario Sunshine wasn't going to launch with the system I canceled my GC order, vowed against Nintendo, and put almost $600 towards an Xbox EB pre-order bundle purely out of spite. It all happened within a couple minutes. I now have a GC and PS2 in addition, but I've grown quite attached to my Xbox, and I believe I'm going MS/360 exclusive this time around.

I think 360 will win it quite easily. I've been surprised how much buzz Gears of War has made, and how easily it has changed people's minds about Xbox. I have quite a few friends who were waiting for Halo 3 but once they watched Gears of War being played they went out and bought a 360 immediately.

Price drop + Halo 3 + GTAIV = 2007 ownage.

I wasn't anywhere near as extreme as that, but i know with PS2, i was keen to get one having loved Final Fantasy 7 thru 9, and GT1 and 2. However we then had all these amazing tech demos and what did we get? The Bouncer!...i suppose i just saw red a bit, it really annoys me when a company makes so many promises and fails to keep them. I still don't own a PS2, am happy with my xbox (and i do own a GC and a Dreamcast) but the way i see it, if you don't vote with your wallet, companies are going to keep doing it. Might be a rather silly attitude to take, but i feel better for it

Some amusing spin, as others have said I'm sure the 360 became the "fastest selling console" once the other two were sold out..

But in the end it doesn't matter does it?

This was predicted many moons ago by the way, as everyone knew in advance there would be supply issues.

I am not sure if it is a good indicator, but on Amazon's best seller list, Xb360 premium is doing better than even PS2 slim for some time(2-3 weeks I guess)... I guess it is true that both GoW and Hd-Dvd add-on drive give a nice boost to XB360 even before black friday and official xmas shopping season.

There is alot of consoles to be sold this holiday in the US. The 360 and the Wii will difinitely benefit from the supply constraint of the PS3. It looks like its going to be impossible for Sony to supply the 1.2 to 1.4 millions that the GC and Xbox1 moved respectively during their initial holiday launches.

These numbers don't include PSone, N64 or DreamCast number so it hard to say how much influence the PS2, GC and the Xbox1 will have on the ability of next gen consoles to mirror the sales of their predecessors in relation to the 2001 launch.
