Red Dead Redemption

The game is amazing to look at & the world size is incredible. I think I could spend weeks just hunting or playing the sidequests. I've got to remember to get back to the story. LOL I know what I'll be doing tonight & the weekend. Love it!

Yeah same here, especially at around sunrise it's one of the prettiest games around and that draw distance is really nice. I'm really liking the game, much more than I liked GTA4. I'm also veering away from the main missions and enjoying side missions, as well as just riding around. I'm also curious where things are gonna go with Bonnie so I need to finish all of her missions as well.

the lighting is godly.... it is just so subtle with so many variations and realistic tones.

Blink more..

Didn't help the infection but a drop did :p

The lighting is simple incredible, and so are the weather effects overall. The shocker was that that rain and thunderstorms are actually varied and gradual. There isn't just one type, and the one I experienced yesterday gave my woofer a workout and I thought that trees will snap off like twigs. That came complete with increased mist and drizzle  Other times, I only saw lighting in the distance but no rain.

I'm a sucker for thunderstorms and this one tops the one in U2 because it really felt and looked authentic.

here is a great post I read elsewhere which sums up the feel of the game for me regarding the feel of the game world

They're designed to give players various things to do on their treks to certain waypoints, as well as to convey the notion that things are happening in the world independently of you. With many of the random events also featuring some sort of violence or deliberate negligence of the law, it also helps to emphasize the "Wild" aspect of that time period.

But the game also puts a great deal of emphasis on lonesomeness as opposed to solidarity. Marston has almost no relation to many of the characters other than they may have info that he needs - he's basically going through the journey on his own, the solo cowboy on an adventure. The environment in RDR is huge but isn't littered with a significant amount of structures or other human-built objects - this is very purposeful, since industrialization had only began to creep into the West during the game's time period, and large swaths of land were empty (outside of the resident wildlife).

Litter this game's map and game world with dots and objects like it's Saints Row or Just Cause and you lose a great deal of the immersiveness of the setting, and it also doesn't gel with the time period.

I am back now in America - up to now the game is good. In Mexico, I really liked the big battles with a lot of allies and even more enemies - this was really great! I solely play the main missions, to make the whole story a little bit denser and compact...so far this worked for me. They also tried to give a lot of variations in the main missions: e.g.: there are some missions with trains involved, but up to now these were always different - great job R*!

As for the graphics - ligtning at the right day of time still wow's me...I really like the shadows as well, they look super sharp and detailed to me (maybe it is a trick, as the camera is rather far away in this game).
Character models always look great, the faces and the voice acting are rather natural to me, animations are top notch if you don't do something crazy. Style and looks of people really fits to their characters, and you can often say in the first moment when meeting a new character if he/she is likable or not - again, great job R*!

The only complain I have is a rather weird one: I don't like shooting animals! It is something which gives me a bad feeling, and the game in this regard is rather brutal...I sometimes hit horses instead of the rider for instance - I just don't like this.

Wait until you or your horse get mauled by a cougar or a bear (bears are ninjas in this game :p). There is the occasional attacks by a whole wolf pack.

Finished the game yesterday - what a great game it is!!
Took me about 15h to complete it, my mission statistics counts about 70% complete or so: I solely did the main missions, no side mission (maybe one head hunter mission or so)!

The ending of the game was extremely good and very unexpected to me - unbelievable!

At the end, maybe the only complain left....I wished they had an more western like epic soundtrack...some of the music was a little bit "modern" and did not fit so good...but this is just a minor complain of an otherwise perfect game!!

Regarding graphics: one of the best I have every seen! In the last third of the game, back in America, there is some setting variety as well...just in before desert stuff gets boring - good move R*!!

Billy's verdict: buy it!

OT: isn't it a phantastic gaming year! Gaming gets better and better if you ask me, just look at this list: GOWIII, ME2, Heavy Rain, Alan Wake and now RDR, just to name a few! Whereas other entertainment medias stagnate (holywood movies lol...sometimes I think there exists only one writer and one regisseur in holywoods with different names - all the same boring stuff), the gaming industry excels in every other game, defending its entertainment crown with ease...

I never was attacked?! In the whole game, I was attacked by one cougar and 2 bears, but this was part of the mission story I guess!

But I did a lot of fast ravel, so maybe this is the reason...

The problem is just that they implemented such life like animations (this game is easily number one regarding animation of animals, and the animation of humans is phantastic as well!!) that it looks a bit too realistic when you shoot it.

I never did hunting as well (only when main story forces me to do), that is why I always was rather low on cash - needed all money to buy new weapons!

Billy now get out there and explore and ride and see the random events and watch the world and hunt.

You have hours upon hours left... and stranger missions and bounties, and mini games and outfit hunting, and gang hideouts...

I have 497 random encounters (random world events) that I have participated in not counting all the other stuff I mentioned.

Totally agree, I'm 16hrs in and only just got to Mexico...and I don't like the GTA games!!

There's just something special about this game, I love that they didn't go OTT on the swearing (like GTA which was cringe-worthy at the best of times), I'm curious as to why this is an 18 to be honest.

I've loved all the challanges and side-quests, I'm currently killing wolves with a knife - 1/5, man I keep killing coyoties accidentally! lol

I like also the 'random' events going on, people calling for help - sometimes needing it, sometimes not. Letting the girl off when it's a hi-jack and getting points for being good. I'm currently a 'hero' with maxed out points - I'd even be tempted to turn 'evil' after completing the game (or have another 'evil' playthough).

All this from someone who doesn't 'long' games, Uncharted 2 blew me away - played through it 3 times and would happily play it again - this is the only other game that makes me feel that way, dispite a few niggling flaws I just can't get enough!

I would! But then, I bought Blur as well and had to play this...I also revisited KZ2, GOW III and UC2 to compare my graphics impressions ;)
And now, I don't have time for gaming

Any game where you can shoot innocent women, or kill them in other ways, will get an 18/Mature automatically. I've seen some pretty nasty stuff, like a guy knifing a prostitute in an alleyway. I snuck up on him and knifed him back.

I tried knifing a guy attacking a prostitute and ended up accidentally slashing them both to death.

The initial install screens indicated nudity as well for the rating, not sure I've seen anything remotely considered nudity though.

Hmmmmm
In one mission there is a dead person that's been hung inside a barn. Definitely nude, because I saw bare ass. Never checked if it was a guy or a girl. I just shot the rope holding the body up. It's one of the sheriff missions in armadillo.

Some of the (?) quests are some of the best missions and adds a lot of character to the game. In my opinion, you're missing out.

For example:
The guy that runs the movie house in Armadillo wants to create a big time movie studio so he gives you two missions to further his vision. He wants to Thieves' Landing to play a guy in Liar's Dice to win a deed to a ranch for use as a movie set. Also, he sends you to find an actor, who is the fastest draw in film but decides to become a real gunslinger. You have to disarm in him a duel to convince him otherwise and come back to the studio.

I've kind of stopped the main quest part and have basically just become a hunter gatherer. The amount of armadillos I've skinned now is mad ;o)

How long does the main story last?

Main story doesn't last anywhere close to the 25 hours people report here. Those 25 hours are their total play time when finishing the main story, which for most includes people doing all kinds of other stuff.

If you only do the main story, nothing else, it is 15 hours maximum. If you fast travel as much as possible, it will be less than that. That being said, imo this is the first Rock Star game where the sidemissions are actually fun.

Yeah, I finished the game myself in mean time: I needed about 15h as you said.
Maybe, if I have time I will look at the side missions, they sound cool and fun!
