Red Dead Redemption

It is annoying that the map does not show your own horse. More than once now I have thought I was hopping on my own steed only to have an NPC start shooting at me because I stole their horse and unintentionally have my reputation sullied when I defended myself. This is especially annoying due to the way your horse will wander off periodically.

So far this game is more fun than GTA4 (which hugely lacked the ancillary activities of earlier incarnations) but it is surprisingly unpolished considering the amount of time they took with it.

Anyone know if there is there a way to skip the skinning animation?

Cheers

That''s why I like to have my horse to be distinct in color....anyways always whistle your horse will come towards you & he'll get market on the map.

park your horse directly over top of the animal (use halt button) and get off the horse. Make sure it says "skin animal" (usually best to be a bit to the right as you always dismount on the left) and press Y/Triangle.

You'll receive skins without going through that animation. The animal will still appear to be normal instead of having it's skin gone like when you normally skin.

Another tip is for a quicksave, just choose a new horse with a deed that you have in inventory (purchased). this salvages any items you have collected if you should die

I think if you press LT/L2 to aim & press Y/Triangle to skin you'll skin the animal immediately without going through animation....same thing with loots.

I'll have to try that but I'm usually on horseback and walk right up, hop off, click y hop back on and ride off.... now if you can just aim from horseback? even better. :D

first I've heard of that though

the meter is that little red bar to the right of the map. ( I thought it was my health for a while but health is not placed on a meter but by visual cues (screen darkening)

HA! That explains how I died last night. I got a warning message that my health was low and I needed to find cover and I looked at my red health bar and it showed I was still at like 3/4rds. I thought the game was bonkers and then I got shot one more time and died. I was like WTF?

So there's no graphic visualization of health other than the screen darkening? Does it darken and then turn red?

I gotta say... bought the game and found it pretty bad looking (PS3) then I went into the display options (of the game) and bumped up the contrast to one bar below max and bumped brightness and saturation up 2 levels and it looks much better (crisper). Seems to have minimized the bluriness to the point where it doesn't bother me anymore. It's still looks low res but colours really pop and bluriness is not an issue.

Has anybody confirmed this works? I learned the horse trick last night and that makes things alot better, but some times I miss.

I liked the animation the first five times, but enough is enough.

First time in a long time that I actually read the manual before playing so I avoided being confused by the unintuitive UI. It gives a bar for stamina and dead eye but uses visual clues for the most important stat. Given the installs on PS3 games these days, I might make it a habit to read the manuals while waiting.

I wandered into the Thieves Landing yesterday and it's one of the most fun cities so far, although mostly because it's a non stop shootout. I find myself having to creep out of buildings, shot a bunch of bad guys who don't seem to like me, then sneak my way to where I want to go. The auto aim has been really useful here otherwise I would have killed so many innocents. Is this normal in the Thieves Landing to have so much gun activity? I really like it though because I get dozens of bodies to loot and it's really fun to play, but man it is one chaotic town!

doesn't work for me

just parking my horse on it and dropping off and back on again... would have been sweet if it did... really should be an option to turn it off

I'll check again...but I do remember that there was a shortcut to skinning & looting which I frequently used to do almost always on instinct.

I understand that their intention probably was to make you grind a bit for loot otherwise you are pretty much wandering around pointing and collecting. In fact many times I'll shoot something and ignore it because I don't want to sit through the skinning.

Other thing I'm wondring is if even with my horse parking, am I getting all of the loot? I killed 20 wolves last night and only got 5 wolves hearts. Was that because I only killed 5 with a knife or because I actually did the full skinning with 5?

Have to experiment more to be sure.

I just can't bring myself to play this game. Multi was fun at first, and I started the SP campaign, but I just can't bring myself back to it. Probably be trading this in soon.

yea, you need to be chilled and like being a lone wolf to enjoy this game in SP. It's a very surreal experience for me. almost like a 2nd life kind of feeling in a huge lonesome world with a few friends scattered about. :p

.... you may like it more in June when the Co-op missions come out and you can get a group to run with?

I killed a bunch of wolves and lost my horse so I wasn't able to use the shortcut and I only got 1 heart from killing about 6 of them.

I don't think you always get hearts, so I doubt it has anything to do with stopping the animation.
