Range of graphics effects in console games *spawn

Games that are praised to hell and back for looking good, Don't....
I don't understood your taste honestly :???: GT5 & U2 pushed the ps3 over its limits, GT5 even more, 4xMSAA, 60 fps & 720p it's almost impossible even for a 360 game. Of course if you want found a flaw even a pc high end not have any chance.

Almighty, that KZ3 character clearly has very low res textures, but with tiling detail textures on top to try to hide the oversized texels. For all your criticism of other games, it shouldn't escape your attention IMHO.

Laa-Yosh...compared to what. What other FPS is doing character models better? And just so we are clear Iam not trying to say KZ3 is the best but it definitely does not look bad.

If your ready to criticize something why don't you offer a rebuttal. <edit> Not trying to insult just trying to understand your point because when I look at other console games its character models aren't looking any better.

Killzone 3 isn't that far off Crysis in terms of clothing detail...

1920x1080, DX9 Very High Config with 8xMSAA+8xTRSAA - Nice frame rate to boot ;)

Image shack has killed the detail but Killzone 3 uniforms are very close...

This is what it says at the top of the page:

All PC stuff should go to their forums and threads, and as far as the mass market is concerned, PC's are used for Office and Facebook.

Putting a detail texture on top of a lowres one won't make it highres. It's a trick, a fake, which depending on how good your eyes are might work better or worse.

Ironically the Halo Reach character shot you've posted actually has a lot more texture detail. But I'd also list Uncharted 2 as a good example, and Gears as well.

Well, it's a very nice trick then. The structure on the clothes look very convincing (and when it comes to games more or less everything is kind of a trick anyways)

It's because UC2 is always praised as being one of the best examples of console graphics, It's not that impressive, The textures for example look god awful at certain angles...

So far Killzone 3 is doing all the right things as to being the first console game that's actually impressed me from a graphics point of view.

Even the mighty Gran Turismo 5 is unimpressive.

You might find an angle that doesnt compliment the graphics (wihich happens with every game unless it intentionally doesnt allow you to control camera angles), but in the majority of scenes the game demonstrates amazing visuals. That image example is probably the worst example you could try to recreate from U2 and it still doesnt look bad which says a lot.

Gears? I remember the character models looking quite awful in that game and I played the game a ton. It especially noticeable when taking photos theatre mode.

I havent noticed it earlier until you mentioned it. I can see that the characters have lots of low res textures on the clothing which would otherwise look ugly. But the detail texture on top does a hell of a difference and covers it well. It makes the "fabric" look very convincing and realistic. Thats a form of normal map applied on top right?
The lack of normal maps on surfaces and models in Reach make it look flatter and less detailed even though models may have more texture detail on them. Thats where I think Reach is weak.

Huh? Pretty much everything in Reach is normal mapped, just because it's not in your face it doesn't mean it's not there.

There are normal maps on every surface, and the texture res is quite high too.

Yes but it's mirrored thus saving enormous amount of UV space in sacrificing texture variety, much like gears character models. It's the right choice I guess since you don't have to worry about the creases, folds and what not a cloth fabric requires, that's why Reach character models look somewhat boring in comparison.

Mhh, I don't see the same problems there as those of KZ3. No low res pixelated texture masked with detail mapping. Look at the camouflage pattern, it's a high (or at least decent) res texture.

it would look good with anisotropic filtering or 4x whatever level is used.
typical case of downsampling a texture which was already low res in the first place, after the climbing plant. that looks like nintendo 64 to me.
other than that the scene is very nicely built.

I still play counterstrike sometimes (pre-steam), that runs on an updated quake 1 engine. low res textures are fine with a lot of AF.

No it's not, just check the whole batch at given site. It's in the middleground.

The particular enemy character doesnt have much textures detail (no need to anyways) and there is a distance from the camera so any judgement based on that is not clear. There isnt much of normal mapping going on either because for artistic purposes the surface is metalic and clean.

Images posted by users of these forums showed much better IQ, and I dont see any point of using the site's screens as references when I have the game ;)

You're joking, right? The textures on the Elite are of a higher resolution than the KZ3 characters' tiled maps, it's just that the art direction is different and neither the lighting nor the texture details aren't pushing it in your face...

Not means so much, forgive me... Halo on the characters use very simplistic texture compared kz...
