I wouldn't trust those rumors much either, ATI seem more responsible when they do product launches then to goof one off.

nah, there are also rumors which stipulate the delay is due to bad performance and not acheiving competetive clock speeds.
I doubt those but it is strange that the r520 is delayed.
Everyone is teetering with anticipation and a SM3 part from ATI is just about due now.

Hmm, maybe working on XB360 and Revolution is putting a strain on ATI's desktop development like XB1 did for NV, putting the brightest teams of guys on the biggest projects. Its rare that a company can kickass and execute perfectly on multiple fronts.

Possible performance differences between G70 and R520 aside, I don't think anyone should expect massive performance improvements from G70 either. It's a refresh after all.

That's true. Yet then again NVIDIA is also working on multiple fronts (console and PC).

Yes, but it is widely and (IMHO) conclusively agreed that ATI's console effort is much more resource-intensive (i.e. R500 vs R520 is much more different than RSX vs G70) than NVs.

I must have really been out of the loop. But unless these rumors have any more substance behind them (as in, more then Inq or regular fanboy forum chatter, I wouldn't put any stock into them.

I really really doubt the R520 = NV30 rumor in particular and would like to see a source if no one minds. NV30 was such a colossal failure R520 would almost have to be WORSE then R420 to approach that. If R520 is simply R420 with SM3 support and 650MHz clock speed, it still would be better then NV30 from price/performance/power consumption/noise perspective

The NV30 is so slow a 9600 can best it in DX9 heavy games, seriously it is daft to suggest something like that, or in your case, post something like that, since it couldn't possibly be true.

Timetables and roadmaps between the two IHVs are obviously very different. Look at my answer above to DC's post; how wrong would I be if I'd claim the same for the R420 compared to the R300? I recall ATI having scratched the original "R400" also and I can't believe that in whatever stage that project was when it was abandoned, that any of the work dedicated to it has gone to waste.

What I can agree to is that ATI has chosen a different architectural path (temporarily until WGF2.0) what the PC and the console market concerns. Don't get me wrong I can understand the R420 absolutely in that sense, but two continuous "generations" sounds a bit too much. All IMHLO of course.

but in dx8 games nv30 would kill a 9600, perhaps the r520 just has poor sm3 performance compared to nv40 or G70, and it has been delayed to fix it.

ATI has already slipped up once with the X700XT debacle...
