R520 informanina, part II (E3, etc)

IMO it makes perfect sense for ATI to implement the unified shader architecture in a console first.

They can use it as a proving ground for the technology on the PC - work out the bugs and inefficiencies, identify areas for improvement etc...

This makes sense because any inefficiencies in a console would be much more difficult for the general public to identify compared to a PC were millions of benchmarks will be taken. By the time the part comes to the PC were people will easily be able to judge its real performance vs nvidia, ATI will have been able to work out all the problems by observing real world performance in the X360.

Maybe a new HLSL compiler target with different performance characteristics in mind. Or maybe another round of slightly missed/misinterpreted specs.

If "Gibbo" is correct we're gonna have to wait a while for R520.. :(

Hi there

ATI R520 is due in October and is looking like it will ship with 32 active Pipelines. It will have a very high price tag and will be extremely hard come by as ATI have had to move onto a new process and yield rates are very very poor so expect long delays on this product and it will no doubt be an extreme flagship product. However it will kick the G70's ass but will cost a lot more and will be hard to get hold off.

ATI Crossfire technology is their version of SLi which works by an external cable linking to cards together and at the moment the technology/drivers are nowhere near as stable as NV's SLi so ATI still have a lot of work to do.

nVidia on the other hand have G70 already in production. The GTX model will be shipping with 24 pipelines and we should have the product in ample stock from the best partners such as BFG, Leadtek and XFX in 2-3 weeks.

I wonder of he's correct about G70. 2-3 weeks sounds pretty good. :)

We're not talking about "OEM refresh cycles" here Dave, we're talking about the R520 availability.

Could you please stay on topic?

So ATi has purposely delayed R520 to coincide with this cycle? What exactly are you getting at?

I think he's implying that ATi has purposely delayed the R520 to coincide with this cycle.

This guy works at overclockers UK.

Which means he really knows no more than anyone else with an opinion on a message board. He is a guy who works in an online shop. If this really was the state of play, we'd be hearing it from more than one source.

If he really was in the know, he'd not be saying anything about it so as to not break NDA or ruin his relationship with those that broke their NDA to him.

No, I'm suggesting that October seems a little late, especially since you want as many of your ducks in a row prior to then ready for before that point. R520 isn't necessarily even the most important part for that either.
