LOS ANGELES - Not content with a 5-to-1 advantage over its rivals in video-game consoles, Sony announced Tuesday that it will open a new front against Nintendo's near-monopoly in handheld gaming by launching a new handheld game device in the fourth quarter of 2004.

On the first day of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, Sony dropped the biggest surprise by unveiling its plans for the PlayStation Portable, or PSP, which will play games, videos and music -- directly challenging Nintendo's GameBoy Advance franchise.

Ken Kutaragi, the creator of Sony's games business and chief executive officer of Sony Computer Entertainment, described the PSP as ``the Walkman of the 21st century.''

Or at least a junior PlayStation. The PSP will play original PlayStation games and feature better graphics and processing power than competitors. ``He is really little, but as a family member, he has the same DNA,'' Kutaragi said. ``Games, music and movies will be fused together.''

I don't remember reading that anywhere .?

LOL  It could be, its original as in "new" not the original Playstation.

Anyway I didn't hear this when watching the E3 conference.

LOL, I also heard Kutaragi refer to PSP design as small and "cute"
Same DNA ? that guy been working with too much Cell architecture

It says "memory stick interface" and then it specifies game data, wireless, etc...

What that tells me is that the wireless part will be used if you have a wireless mini card that comes compatible with the Memory Stick interface...

Game data, that might mean game saves, but maybe also games themselves...

I'm surprised that you guys haven't mentioned the Turbo Express. It is, to this day, the most advanced gaming portable machine ever developed, and it came out in 1991!

It was the same size as the original Gameboy, had a screen with a higher resolution than NTSC (400x270 res, simply amazing), and a TV Tuner. It played all the TurboGrafx-16 games, and simply obliterated everything. Remember those credit card sized HuCards? :)

The downsides?

Battery life: ~3hrs
Price: Initially $300, before settling to $200.

This was in comparison to a GB price that was ~$100 at launch, and dropping fast.

The portable market is a far far different beast than the console market. Price and battery life rule the day. Those are the only reasons why the GB and all its iterations have dominated all comers for over a decade.

If Sony wants to succeed on a grand scale with this handheld, they need to make sure they address those key facets from the get go.

p.s.: V3, the GB was never in danger. Tetris made the GB the handheld of choice from the outset, and sales were always strong for the console. Pokemon simply sent it into the stratosphere, with the introduction of the GB Pocket and GB Color in the mid-90's.

Wow, people really have a hard time believing that Nintendo was in trouble with GB.

I am not talking about brink of death because of competitor here, by that time all competitors were all dead ;)

But consumer actually lost much of the interest in GB, GB sales and its software were low and declining. 3rd Parties were dropping support of it as well.

At one point, Nintendo choices were to drop GB or Pokemon. Yamauchi being a tough bastard that he is, opted for Pokemon.

the Turbo Express being the most advanced is arguable. It was basicly a portable TurboGrafx-16. the Sega Nomad was a portable Genesis. the Genesis (thus Nomad) was true a 16-bit machine, with parallax scrolling, decent sound from the base unit. more sprites. the TG16 (thus Express)
was weaker in many key areas. It had the ability to put more colors on screen though.

Yes I remember them! the resolution on the Express was very high, and yes it obliterated the pathetic Gameboy, and even the Lynx too in terms of games (Lynx had hardware scaling though!)

While the Nomad came out 1994 or 1995, the Express was actually out in 1990, before even the weaker Gamegear (Master System quality) of 1991. So in its day, the Express was the champ. at least until the Nomad came along. both Nomad and Express had their faults but I would perfer them over GB, GBC and even GBA for the games they have!

Ugh, you are right ... mea culpa. In my defense though, Id be very much surprised if any developer uses it as a 64 bit processor (it supports the MIPS32 ABI too, and 64 bits just wastes space).

It's winning this one because it had a headstart
Headstart = more games = more buyers
The Emotion Synthesis et al hype helped. Were there any launch games worth playing? Hey let's buy this thing to play multiregion DVDs and play old PSX games

To say that the PS2 is outselling the competitors 5 to 1 solely on the fact that it had a head start is the most retarded thing I have ever heard. It's borderline bias.

Are you forgetting the thousands of people waiting in line for days to get a PS2? Are you forgetting how ps2's sold on ebay for 1000 dollars? Or how about how people ignored DC in favor of the PS2 when it had a HUGE headstart over PS2, going by your logic they would go for the DC right? Because it had a headstart and more games, but no, we see this isnt the case.

Your a fan-boy and a very obvious one at that.

IT'S PSP!

Looks pretty small, if the screen is anything to go by. A tad bigger than GBA SP. pretty PS1-ish in design.

Kudo to this concept.
