PSP maybe no support for wifi and mp3 playback

I couldn't care less if there's MP3 support or not. But I consider wireless networking as a major plus over current setups (link cable).

I'm just setting up a scenario based on my own experience.
Alright, but was it not basically your claim that an online game session is typically more of an investment of time than an offline one? Whether or not that was an assumption, a hypothesis or a statement based on personal experience that's basically what you said, right?

To which, I supplied a counterpoint of game types that can be played quite easily in their entirety in the space of minutes, or hours, depending on your personal preference. If all you are speaking from is your own experience, then we need only establish that others have different experiences to establish value for the wireless online proposition.

I don't see the PSP being the driving-force that will accomplish that though.

I agree, and I hope you don't think I was implying otherwise. It won't be the driving force for wireless adoption because that's already well under way. But it could very well become a contributing factor that helps build further momentum or even just help keep momentum going. It doesn't have to be a driving force, it just needs to be another compelling use for wireless networks that helps build a critical mass.

Besides, what kind of network quality will you get from a public hot-spot anyway? What if devices using wifi grows faster than the performance of the base stations? What kind of ping can one expect to get? Also, some places may well require you to pay first before you get access, etc.

...

I'm wondering how much configuration stuff this will require. It damn better be both foolproof and idiot proof or else it'll bomb no matter what...

All valid concerns but none so daunting that anybody should shy from the challenge of surmounting them.

Not sure exactly how inter-operable they are, but that we do have a, b and g standards ALREADY is a bit worrysome, don't you think?
Speaking for myself I have b & g based wireless devices communicating together without problems. As for your concerns over proliferating standards, I simply don't share them.
