Japan is set to see a rollout of a direct PSP store, allowing purchasing and download of content direct to the platform. If Sony get TV/movie and music streams aplenty (as well as rolling out the service worldwide!), they may see some beleated and much anticipated growth of the device as a media unit.

Interestingly the title search to this thread threw up this old announcement of the service, slated for end of '08. I guess a worldwide rollout is expected.

Note that they also mention that you'll be able to play ad-hoc supporting games over the internet through your PS3. It's a small thing, but it's interesting. Monster Hunster apparently will be the first game that supports this. Not sure why they mention this - apparently it does take something extra.

XLink Kai is very popular these days, SCE should have supported the function on PS3 earlier as its WLAN is guaranteed to work with PSP after all.

I am happy about the ad hoc over WAN support via PS3. But since it seems Capcom is going to have to patch MHP2G to support this new feature, and other PSP games are not going to be able to support it without being patched. Why don't they just directly patch internet play into the game? It seems kind of a round about way to support online play.

I know the latest Wipeout already supports regular on-line play. Why doesn't MHP2G? I could understand if it was a Sony game and they were leveraging the game to sell more PS3s. But this is Capcom so there must be some other reason.

Maybe the libraries for implementing a tcp/ip stack on the PSP take up too much resources. Or maybe the PS3 "middle man" client offers some superior advantages like voice/video chat in game or quality match making services I suppose that could be a good reason to go that route.

Where can I find out more about PSP's ad hoc over WAN support ? Like what games use it, and how.

I think it's basically a tunneling service supported by PSP/PS3 OSs and PSN, so no patching is required for PSP software. But you need PSN ID instead for PS3 to use the matching service provided by PSN. Planex is selling their WLAN adapters with XLink-Kai bundled, they see PSP and MHP2G users as its main customers.

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan To Release New Wireless Headset For Playstation®3

Was there a SCEJ conference yesterday ?

I saw a press release for the official headset too:
http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/080902ae.html

Installed with Bluetooth, it pairs automatically with PS3 by simply using the bundled USB cable. The inner ear phone speaker of the new Headset along with the noise cancelling feature when in High Quality mode delivers stable, superior sound.

Additionally, the bundled cradle can be used to charge the battery which will allow maximum of eight hours of voice chat when fully charged. While the Headset is connected to PS3, it will support on-screen indicator showing the headset connection status, battery charge level, speaker volume level and microphone mute status at a push of a button.

That SCEJ link is interesting. Am I right to read that in Japan:
16% of PSP owners play games and nothing else
25% watch TV (Is this the TV-on-demand service ? or just the external video connector ?)
39% web browse
46% use it for photo mode/slideshow
58% for video playback
69% for music playback

[They didn't say how many use everything else except play games :) ]

Oh okay, the "Ad hoc over WAN" picture you posted above is an official Playstation service. I thought you were still talking about Xlink Kai. I wonder if they are going to bring it to US.

Are you sure that doesn't included previously ripped TV? It doesn't sound like it, as there's a separate category for watching video. But with 10 million PSPs in Japan, 2.5 million TV tuners seems a lot to me! Wouldn't we have heard about the peripherals success?

The TV usage number does correspond to 1seg usage. The original text mentioned 1seg. I just didn't know what it was.

Does anybody know if the PSP will be getting a digital tv tuner for the US market? I'm not refering to 1seg but a regular digital tuner when the 2009 switchover occurs. I'm intersted in getting PSP3000 and watching tv onthego with it.

ATSC isn't really workable for mobile usage, there's already mobile DTV broadcasting in the US (DMB and DVB-H (both offered as pay services)) so the digital transition doesn't really come into play.

So you mean there will be no more portable tvs sold in the US anymore?
