PSGL Advantages

No, but compared to PS2 Linux, PS3 Linux excelled in scientific computing and other business applications. That is until Sony pulled OtherOS.

You have more than enough Linux enabled PS3 out there and I believe you can get more from Yellow Dog (already configured). Universities have also the academic kit ready, and CELL blades should be in supply now.

I'm getting a PS3 slim in a couple or so days, and Linux capability would've been a fun thing to mess with, but I got Ubuntu on my laptop anyways. I'd like to think Linux on PS3 was successful though, since it gave research institutions a quick and relatively cheap doorway into Cell programming early into the game. I guess we should assume IBM pushed Sony to allow this? But I guess in line with Panajev's comment, with CELL blades available, the PS3 really isn't needed by education and research institutions. Still, Linux would've been a fun thing just to try on the PS3 just to say "I did it because I could," on a console no less.

Sony claims to have discontinued linux cause they didnt want to keep updating the drivers, which costs them time and money.

Which I dont understand, surely PS3s games go through the same software interface to the hardware that Linux would.

No, that's the point. They had to keep updating the hypervisor - the part that sits between the OS and the hardware - to support Linux, which they didn't want to do.

Honestly, what good have Sony seen out of supporting Linux? A small amount of initial buzz, which is of no value anymore.
