ps4 supports user replacable hdd!!!

good news, but I would rather buy 1TB PS4 so I don't have to fiddle with another HDD, although I have one empty external HDD enclosure

big deal for me personally, rather replace it with a 7200 rpm drive if the one that comes with it isnt. Noticeable difference for PS3.

not sure why this is a big deal , ms supports usb flash drives and hardrives.

Does XBone support game installs to usb drives, and can they support 600 MB/s?

Flash HDD over SATA 3 is a big deal if you want fast loading and pop in free streaming. Even if the bone supports this not everyone would want an external HDD caddy permanently plugged in through USB.

Being able to slip an SSD inside the PS4's nice little (relatively) box is a nice touch, but the performance is definitely the main thing.

Still Fat32?

As has been mentioned before the PS3's internal FS was never FAT32 as far as anyone is aware. People seemed to often confuse its external FS support with its internal FS. It's currently assumed, and I believed mentioned by those who've hacked it, to be USF2.

Is connected internally to South Bridge wich contains ENCDEC device to manage XTS-AES-128 encryption/decryption, and a SATA-150 controller with a maximum transfer speed of 1.5 Gb/s.

GameOS partition
  • Is an UFS2 256-bit file system with a sectorsize of 512 bytes (4096 bits).
  • Because is perconsole encrypted, it is not possible to read out the data on it with another console (it will just ask to reformat it, to set it to its own perconsole encryption, hence emptying the drive)

Thankfully, yes it does. Announced at the reveal conference and I believe stated to have the same capabilities as the internal drive (in terms of what it can be used for). As for it's speed, that's only announced as being USB 3 of course.

Well that's something at least. And I suppose you could just use the back USB ports and have it hidden out of sight behind the main unit...

My biggest concern with a built in drive is reliability. IMO, disc and hard drives are the two biggest sources of failure (at least based on my personal experience). So if X1's drive is not replaceable, will the console still work if it dies and try to use a USB one as a replacement? I can replace the drive on the PS4 so that's not an issue.

Last time I tried on 360 there was a size limit of 16GB or so. That still there?

They updated that to 32GB but that was the max due to the file system according to public information. I'm assuming X1 doesn't use the same limited file system so there shouldn't be capacity limit...I hope I'm right because I have a stylish black 3TB external USB3 HDD waiting for my X1.

Hope they use harder screws for the drive bay this time. The PS3 ones were too soft. But good to hear we can replace the HDD nonetheless.

Not ever an issue for internal HDD even on PS3.

It's the USB thumb drives (FAT formatted) that have 4GB limit.

Yeah sorry, that's the issue - you can't get files bigger than 4GB onto the HDD.

An endless source of annoyance for someone like me who wants to have all his videos on the console.

What FS it can read from external drives has not been announced. We probably won't find out until someone asks directly or the online help files (manuals) go up on playstation.com for the PS4.

Actually ERP knows... but he's not telling me :(
