[PS3] Uncharted 2

Finished this a couple of days ago. Absolutely amazing. This is one of my favorite games of this console generation and I can't wait to see what Naughty Dog does next.

How ?
EDIT: mmendez, you might want to spoiler tag the U1 spoiler.

Sorry, I assumed everyone playing U2 would have gone through the first but thinking about it some people might actually get U1 after enjoying the new one. Spoiler tags added, hopefully not too late.

How does one access the "Machinima mode" in Uncharted 2?
I haven't found a menu option for it, does it unlock only after you have completed the game?

Train Scene

I have a question regarding the train scene: anyone checked if there are repeating settings during the whole scene?

I stopped and watched for a couple of seconds/minutes and I never had the feeling that the environments are 'looped' (which they did for instance in Killzone 2 train scene after a couple of seconds), but maybe I did not check long enough (although I checked over again during this chapter).

Is non-repeating large scale environment during a 'rail' scene even possible? Maybe procedural?

Add me to the finished list. GOTY ... or graphics of the year...or even the generation..i find it hard to expect another console title that will knock me off like Uncharted 2...maybe for GT5...I also dont expect any third person game to reproduce such fidelity...maybe for Uncharted 3...the graphics accomplish imo..what Nvidia/ATi was promising wrt to DX9 graphics, you know those beautiful tech demos and white paper talks, its all here in Uncharted 2 SP, real..frickin' time in..frickin' game! Come to think how all this is all done by a 7600GT class gpu, you gotta wonder how efficient other game engines are.

For the gameplay it would rate it as safe. It does not break new grounds like MGS1/Mario64/Zelda64/Halo, those games when you first pick up em up, you know they are bringing something new to the table in terms of controls that enables access different gameplay possibilities. Its not a bad thing as 3D is so mature now...it is hard for a developer to come up with a new control scheme... the gunplay is however.... leagues better than Uncharted 1, there is more pow..you are firing firearms instead of pallet guns as ND made great strides to listen and improve upon fans' criticisms. GJ guys! Its definitely more fun blasting baddies in Uncharted 2! Much much more fun!

My rating for Uncharted 2:

Graphics 10
Audio 10
Gameplay 9
Story 8.5 (could do with a lil' more crazy MGS style twists, melodrama and exposition..just a lil' more, not too much though)
Writing and acting 9.5

Overall 9.5

My question is, if they're FMVs, why not increase the IQ for them. I don't see the downside; maybe for some odd reason the engine is only capable of 720p 2xMSAA and what appears to be 4xAF. No need for shadow aliasing in a prerendered cutscene either. :???:

Okay, thanks.

BoardBonobo brings up a good point, that it isn't always clear where you're supposed to go or what you're supposed to do in some parts. The hints should pop up a bit earlier IMO if the player is wandering around aimlessly.

Crushing is seriously, ridiculously hard. Don't think I'm gonna make it

If you don't know where to go I think you just push up...

I'll just keep it short since it actually is stupid move from my part to answer a 'flamebait post'. But first there are several games and the ones you refer to aint just techdemos. Look up scores on metacritics to see they actually contain gameplay that is classed as excellent. But you wouldn't know since you never played nor seen those games you are reffering to in action or otherwise you wouldn't make such an utterly ridicolous claim as "nothing more than tech demo's for a fancy engine". And what does an engine replacement have to do anything with previous games gameplay or popularity state?

I mean when a new game in the series comes out people will focus on that one and the older ones get less popularity however it wont change that they where good games and that people still after several years still enjoy those games. ;)

But really people are allowed to have their own opinions not tied to 'faction flag waving'. I just checked this sites url and it doesn't contain the word "GAF"... :)

He's refering to the previous statement about no console games have made that poster go "Wow" as far as graphics are concerned. Tha_Con's saying there aren't many PC games better looking than Uncharted 2 (in his opinion). Nothing to do with the "Wow" of the gameplay.

I know this is way too early but for the next iteration, how about a deep dive to Atlantis? It's one of the most fabled mystery to our knowledge, a perfect intro for underwater gameplay and discovering another sanctuary unspoiled by modern world. Also introducing the worm hole mechanics by warping or timetraveling in creating opportunity for more complicated plot and varied locales, all with the updated uncharted 3.0 engine

Whit this line it was pretty set..

I can think of a few better looking games on PC that are nothing more than tech demo's for a fancy engine that will be replaced within 12 months and everyone will have forgotten about it.

That was all I was interested in respoding to. That is a pure flamebait/trolling attempt at another aknowledged good game and the rest is opinions. I say 'flamebait/trolling attempt' becouse anyone that have seen those games in action knows they have good gameplay, you might say genre defining to... and well they have gameplay!

So I really dont know what you are trying to "excuse"..

I mean if I say X critically acclaimed game on PS3/360 game is "nothing more than tech demo for a fancy engine" then I would be called out on that line and rightfully so.

The trolling came in the post he was responding too. Fighting fire with fire.

And he was saying that most of the best graphical engines on the PC are just tech demos.

Ie. Crysis is the best looking game and is a great game. But everything else that's impressive looking isn't much of a game.

You're misreading him.

The only negative thing about the game is Turkish guardians. We're not Hindu / Pakistani dammit!!22!!

That's why I give U2 a 20/20. Sorry ND , I have to :(.

It is looped. Each checkpoint seems to have its own looping environment.

Seriously, there was no troll in NavNucST3's post. He wasn't incredibly impressed with the graphics, that's his call. There's no reason to circle the wagons and start casting aspersions.

I'm at Chapter 18(?) now.
I just passed through the ice caves into that hidden temple and I'm doing the big platforming sequence where you climb on the giant gears etc. Finally, a good platforming sequence in the game. Still isn't very hard, but at least I felt like there were some obstacles that could have killed me.

I didn't like the train sequence a lot. Most of the interesting action takes place in mini cut scenes. I want to make the character jump to escape an explosion, not watch him do it on his own. Not that it's a bad level, but you only really get to play the standard gunplay. Maybe the gunplay is starting to wear out on me after playing through those co-op missions with Robert.

Not looking forward to the end boss. I heard it can be very frustrating. Hopefully I'll be able to play a good portion of the game tonight.

Damnit! I've been flying through this topic only reading bits and pieces in fear of reading something that would take the magic off when I finally receive this...

This better be in my mailbox when I get home....

Twas the platforming bit I was talking about. You're getting to the meat of the game...and my favourite level (lots of varied gunplay)

It is looped. Each checkpoint seems to have its own looping environment.

Are you absolutely sure? I kept watching for quite a few minutes. Lots of similar stuff...but not exactly the same. I'll watch again on crushing.
