[PS3] Uncharted 2

Plus I don't think U2 really fits itself comfortably into a genre. Third Person Shooter, Action Adventure, Platformer...
Indeed, it's clearly a broader game. It's a cross-genre platform shooter. Having tried the Beta today (sorry Deep, but the floors were so shiny and bumpy I just had to go have another look...) the platforming aspect really expands the notion of a shooter, compared to what I'm used to in WH, KZ2, RFoM etc. The movement is wonderfuly fluid. It's wrong to pigeon-hole creations just for the sake of classification. Rather than say 'U2 is an action adventure and so fits in with this group of games' it should be recognised for standing apart. Think Venn diagram if you really have to classify.

So far, from what little I've seen, I can well understand the high scores. Out of 5, it definitely deserve 5. Out of 10, it's probably as perfect as any game can ever be, so anything less than 9.5 would be unjust, meaning 10/10 is a better rating than 9/10. Of course much depends on how nit-picky you are and how grumpy you feel. I could part apart many games I enjoy!

At the end of the day, its down to us to play the game and form our own opinion and rate it, rather than try to accurately measure a game's value from a selection of other people's subjectively scored opinions.

I'll try and get on later this week.

And you need to work on your headshots! I've killed one guy, left another to you, and after I've reloaded you're still shooting him lol

Co-op is real fun.

Why can I stand on a flaming car and not get hurt? It makes the lighting pretty cool, standing in fire. If you are using the dark haired girl, her lip synching looks really creepy, like she's angrily grinding her teeth. If you do it while standing in fire, it looks like she's the devil.

So do you think that Uncharted 2 defines a new type of game?
If their mix is done so well, maybe it is the case.

Other games have created sub-genres taking mechanics that were forgotten or that remained without use, integrating them in a cohesive manner.

I can´t remember games similar to Uncharted 2, with a strong shooter component and a cohesive, smart use of plataforming. Perhaps is the way these pieces are mixed what satisfies the players so much . Reloading and use of cover transformed Gears of War, for example.

(My written english is awful... I know it. I ask for your patience in advance. But I´m not an automatic translator...not yet. My notions on english grammar are more or less the same -none-, but I don´t know enough vocabulary. The Skynet part was funny ;-))

So do you think that Uncharted 2 defines a new type of game?
No, I think gaming is evolving to defy classification as genres. There's no need to be so limiting when games are mixing and matching from many different genres.

Unless you're building up a Congressional Library of Games or are wanting to catalogue games for online search and sales by users who don't know the name of the game they are looking for and instead are just after something in a genre, there's no need or reason to label games one genre or another.

Cover-based action shooter with platforming elements, or more easily known as CBASWPE.

Have you guys played any good CBASWPEs lately?

Back to the game ...

My only concern is variety in enemies during co-op. I hope there are a few enemy types with unique behavior. So far there is the standard solider, soldier with shield and the big guys with shotgun, minigun or whatever. The big guys just stand in the open and the soldiers have the same basic cover and move, and don't seem particularly smart. I have no real problems with that, but I'm thinking long term, it might get old quickly.

The game is a lot of fun. Gold rush is very challenging. The co-op map included is getting stale after three or four plays. Doesn't seem to be the full mission though, because it ends very abruptly. How many co-op missions is the full game supposed to include? I think gold rush will have the longest legs of the co-op mode. Still haven't played much of the competitive multi.

All they need to do is to allow other players to play the enemy bosses in co-op (like Demon's Souls) and you'd have free unpredictable AI. :p

Should try competitive and level up with the crowd. I have been playing deathmatches exclusively. Still have a lot to learn from fellow gamers.

EDIT: I haven't bought any boosters with my money yet. What's good to equip ?

What's up with the coop games ending when a player drops? It's happened to me in about half the games I've played.

What about the strangler guys?

Have you played it on hard and crushing?

I've played it about 10-15 times....either on the harder difficulty levels (still haven't managed to do Crushing) or with either two or three players, as it's a different experience.

The strangler guys are the same as all the other soldiers. They'll just grab you if you get too close.

Played on hard, not crushing. So far I've mostly just played with my brother, so I've never played with 3 people.

Okay... keyn (JardeL) sent me a XMB room invite for the U2 beta. If you want in, send me an XMB note and I'll invite you. It's probably a GAF room but hey, him and I and a couple more straddle between 2 fora, so I think it's fair game.

Ha ha, it's 10:00+ am over at my side. Got work to do.

What you're asking is like... dangling food in front of someone who's starving.

Anyone felt the graphics engine is lacking something...some form of standout shader effects..? Game looks bright..colorful textures...buttery framerates...but the lighting felt lowresy...i know its only mp...but i like to see some high res normal mapping and explosions/flames/smokes and the HDR...the sort of effects from shader based hardware...the engine reminds me J&D in that its kinda pretty but plain?

One thing I can't knock is the graphics. I've noticed some aliased shadows, but that's pretty much standard for games right now. There are some very nice effects in the game. The depth of field and motion blur are done very well. I also think the lighting and water are done very well. Lots of high detail textures too.

Nope. Okay, the explosion effects aren't the best ever, and it lacks the persistant smoke of KZ2, but shader effects are excellent IMO. There are subtle details in all surfaces, and the water shading is first-rate. I'd say it's perhaps the art-style that you find lacking, as it doesn't lend itself to the beauties of sub-surface scattering skin-shaders and the like.

Oh yeah, and as Scott_Arm says, the DOF is very impressive. Looks very natural, and fits in nicely with where you're looking. Not at all obtrusive or overdone (apart from scale of blur).

The shadows can be blocky at times, the smoke could be more convincing, some textures could be better, but taken as a whole this is one of the most beautiful games I've seen. Do note, I am a sucker for color in my games.
