[PS3] Uncharted 2

Answered my own problem. I thought the open demo started because my card says the code is valid from August 19th until September 18th, but the demo starts on the 15th for preorders. Unfortunately that is NHL10 day for me, so I probably won't be trying the demo for quite a while.

For those too lazy to go to the link, this is going to be the 2009 GOTY IMO (if it can beat inFamous).
I completely agree! Looks more amazing everytime they release new footage.
Definitely one of the best games EVER, even if I haven't played it yet, but if U:DF was anything to go by, I'm sure I'll love Uncharted 2:Among Thieves.

That's probably the first game that really makes me want a PS3. Both gameplay wise and technical aspect-wise (gfx/animation/etc).

If Sony can pull off a good marketing campaign with this one, they can win back quiet core audience with 299$ price point. This can help PS3 how Gears 1 helps 360 during 2006.

What instrument is at the beginning?

It makes me sad :'(

Heh, it's the second time I hear people comment about the music. It's very rare for B3Ders to talk about audio.

That trailer is the best yet. I hope it kicks off a series of races between PS3 developers, cross platform or not.

deepbrown, the music is an East-meet-West composition. The instrument is called Er Hu: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erhu

The Chinese instrument has only 2 strings and no fret. That's why the performer can make very [hmm... how should I say this....] slurred and sorrowful sound. The sound chamber is usually wrapped by real snake skin. The expensive ones have ivory handle. PETA am cry. Was involved in an orchestra and we had a combined performance 10-20 years ago -- similar to the one recorded in the Uncharted 2 trailer.

The Chinese orchestra has evolved over the years. These days, they also use Timpani in their percussion section, and added valves to their wind instruments to "stablelize" the notes.

EDIT:
It sounds like someone we like will die in the game.

Yes like UDF I like that they are using intersting instruments - I believe it's something they asked Greg to do.

And I love HS's soundtrack. Just brilliant work from Nitin.

I also got that feeling from the music! There is a serious understone to the music this time. UC_DF's music was all about adventure and trhills with a sense of some exciting unknown factor you are in th emiddle of. Even the unknown felt likw something cheerful, like Gold ! !

This time there is more"human emotions" factor to the music along with adventure. We might see the serious side of Drake in this one ! Please don't kill Elena T_T , I love her!
IMO, Chloe might die, and even though she is shady, Drake, the good guy he is, will do everything to save her, and the sense of loss will prevail in Drake, as I am inferring they were really good friends, Ithink partners, in the past. All this is just speculation, no facts, just my mind playing with the music ;) !

Yes, I am thinking Drake will not get off easily this time. He'd have to choose between the treasure and something precious.

I like my TPS on-rails when single player, that's because for me, a single player game like this is about story and plot. I prefer off-rails when in co-op or multi-player. My gold standard for this is Half-Life. It's design in a such a way that it keeps you on the rails, even though it doesn't programmatically force you on the rails. The story, NPCs, and level design just keep pushing you forward non-stop.

IMHO, open-ended sandbox games are overrated and only a few stand out.

I also like my TPS to be on-rails and agree that sandbox games that work are few and far between.

Last night I finished Batman, and that is about as "on-rails" as it gets. But clever design made me feel in control of the game and not having the game in control of me. The same for titles such as Rainbow 6, GRAW, Gears, Tomb Raider, Half Life, Bioshock, etc. All very rails, but all made me feel as though I was in control of the character, in fact made me feel I was the character.

With Uncharted, though, I never felt "Nathan Drake" and I never felt as though I was controlling the game, but rather that the game was pulling me along by the hand and a lot of it was just "filler" designed to get me to the next "set-piece". I don't really know how to explain it better than that.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the game, but it didn't really satisfy me. When finished, I felt kind of empty and it didn't feel as though I had achieved anything.

Then again, maybe it's just me ;)

I think I know what you mean. In Uncharted, despite being in a jungle, you are very much limited to that corridor and thus it feels like you are on rails more so than other games. In Tomb Raider, you don't get that feeling as much, since you are mostly in caves and at some point get to an intersection where you might have to decide between two directions. Also, in Tomb Raider, you mostly get a good few of the level and have different objectives to solve before you can progress (solving puzzles, finding switches etc). It really feels like you are adventuring through a cave/tomb with all the freedom you would want.

In Uncharted, it's more of a corridor, battle-field, corridor, battle-field, corridor, batlle-field. This is something I found quite annoying actually. I would have prefered to have the enemies more evenly placed across the level, rather than walking a bit, and then having to fight waves of enemies until you could finally progress to the next short walk only to be soon later faced with another enemy sandbox battle.

I hope they have a bit more variety in Uncharted 2. From what I've seen, this seems to be the case.

Open MP demo for Uncharted 2:
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/102/1023958p1.html

I talked to the developers the other day, and they said the purpose of this freebie is to give you as much of the multiplayer game as they can in a reasonably sized file. So, you give Naughty Dog 1.5 GB, and they're giving you four maps, four competitive modes, two co-op modes, the much-hyped cinema mode, the ability to create custom games, access to new skins, about 80 percent of the boosters you'll find in the final game, and so much more.

...

Of course, all of this multiplayer mayhem plays into the game's cinema mode where you can save matches, replay them, move the camera around, and do nifty green screen stuff. All of the tools that will be in the final cinema portion of the game are going to be here for you to play around with.

A final feather in the demo's cap is that it's going to have the fully fleshed-out money/store system so that you can take the cash you're earning in multiplayer and buy new skins, boosters, co-op weapon upgrades and taunts.

None of the demo outcome will carry over to the final game.

if you preorder the game from GameStop, you can get into the demo exclusively from Sept. 15 to Sept. 28, 2009. On Sept. 29, 2009, the demo will open to everyone and stay that way until Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is out on the streets.
