PS3 Open Platform - some big news

My mistake then. I was not aware that HDMI can become DVI...
Remember that PS3 HDMI output has HDCP enabled(*).. so you'll be needing a monitor that supports DVI/HDCP. Examples being newer Dell displays like the 2007WFP or 2407WFP.

No HDCP support = No digital video..

(*)Devkits have an option to turn this off, retail boxes do not.

Do you think that will also be active while using PS3 Linux?

Hmm.. That's an interesting question! If I were in a tin-foil-hat kind of mood, then yeah.. I'd expect that to carry into Linux too.. if only to stop people from doing extraction of DVDs (and eventually Blu-Ray movies) using HDMI capture hardware under Linux. Of course, for DVDs there are loads of programs that rip stuff to hard disk - and I dare say Blu-Ray will be broken in a similar way in the future - but from a corporate point of view I'd say it's probably easier to leave it on and keep all the movie studios happy. Although the stuff in my signature applies here, naturally.

Regardless, It's not like SCE have ever said that PS3 would support connection to a 'normal' PC monitor (whether that's via VGA or through unprotected DVI-D).. and the manual says HDCP is needed for HDMI, so I'm not sure there's (much) reason to complain(*).

That's a great news for the Linux fan amongst us (If someone gets to run BeOS on VMware, even Ingenu will be interested in the PS3).
I hope that Sony gave enough tools to Linux hackers, so they can use most of the PS3 functions on every distro. The Ubuntu fans will want their favorite distro to run with most of the bell and whistles.
SOME PEOPLE ?!??! That about as fuc*king braindead that it come from Sony. Basically all the normal LCD/TFT monitors only have DVI. So to develop to PS3 one has to buy a new monitor too.

Well that can you expect from the companyt that is constanly arrogant and manages to year after year fu*k up things... I especially enjoy the lies about memory. When game is runnig it only has 192 MB available, NOT 256 MB. Because Sony constantly wants to have 64 MB for browser/ some moron IM app in the background. Which one is more important, kick ass game or some half assed browser ??!?! When it comes to games, that damn 64 MB really can make the difference.
Chillax, eSa. ;)

I agree with you that I'd prefer the OS to take much less space.
Let me tell you that the PS3 OS team in Japan was kind of under pressure to meet the release date, and that's an understatement. A few months ago they were also about to change some of the OS requirements, for the worse, according to some source at SCE. Just for them to get the OS running fine on release date, I presume.

Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if, time passing by, the future OS revisions use less RAM. What is important is that the physical RAM chips are there, the software side of things can change with time.

Is this OS size thing confirmed now?

Also what hinders the PS3 from putting (unused) parts of the OS to the HD when a game is running?

If this is indeed true. It would be nice to see a VGA adapter a la PS2s Linux-kit:

Maybe this is a stupid question, but couldn't the PS3 have HDCP enabled only when displaying HDCP protected content?

I think we'll get a VGA adapter, and I wouldn't be surprised if the old one works. I'm just going to wait and see until Yellow Dog Linux is released and wait for first impressions on that.

I have that kit, and still have the cable. If all goes well, I'll let everyone know Friday if it works with the PS3 on a standard CRT monitor, sync-on-green CRT monitor, and a standard LCD monitor. If there's any other request, let me know, I'll see if I can accommodate.

You covered it all. You can try how it works on standard TV just for fun :)

*laughs*

On a related note, you wouldn't happen to know if the "sync-on-green" issue applies to digital panels as well (such as LCDs, Plasmas, etc)? Does that apply to that technology or is that a factor that's exclusive to CRT displays?

And to be fair, they didn't meet that deadline on at least one account.
Until some firmware update in the future, the reserved memory is essentially used for nothing* - as you're forced to exit to XMB from a game if you want to say - read a message, or download something.

*I'm aware that some services "are" running during gaming (such as message notification) but I would argue those could run using a tiny fraction of memory (certainly nothing that goes into MegaBytes).

It's up now with the "Other OS Installer".
http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/index.html
http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/manual.html
http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/faq.html
Requirements for Installing "Other OS"

* Personal computer (PC)
* PLAYSTATION®3 (a free space of 10 MB or more must be available on the hard disk)
* Environment that allows your PC to connect to the Internet

Any of the following recording media with a free space of 10 MB or more
* Commercially available USB memory device
* Commercially available USB-connectable hard disk
* Empty CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVE+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, BD-R, or BD-RE disc
* Memory Stickâ„¢ *
* SD memory card *
* CompactFlash® *
Q. Do I need a PC to prepare for the installation?

A. Yes. You need a PC to download necessary files and to store them on the recording medium. Since the web browser currently installed in PLAYSTATION®3 cannot be used to save a downloaded content to the desired directory on a recording medium, the preparation for installing the "Other OS" cannot be made without a PC.

Now we just need some OSes :)

Also, it seems like Gentoo is or will be available for PS3 shortly. PowerDeveloper.org updated its Playstation page with a link to this, and Luca Barabato mentions that they're looking for someone with a PS3 to test a build for him. This thread on PowerDeveloper.org also mentions that Gentoo for PS3 should be available very shortly (they in fact said there that it should be ready before the 17th).

Sony has delivered big-time on this account!

By the way, the HDCP requirement may not be valid during Linux operation, as the HDCP requirement really should only go for BluRay playback, right?

Anyway, all will be clear soon enough!
