PS3 'near-final' hardware present at E3

256 megs of rambus xdr ram with 40 gb of bandwidth
Where is the GPU ram? 40 gb/s to share between a monster CPU and a GPU would be an enormous mistake.
X360 GPU has 48 gb/ just for its back buffers!

Yeah, just like last generation, Sony will not make any glaring mistakes like that.

I think he is trying to sat that Sony will not make the same mistake with the ram again.
Which mistakes? I was talking about lack of memory bandwith, not lack of memory space.

I think the gpu will have edram. Dunno how much so i didn't list it .

Also yes only 256 megs of ram. Everything is a trade off

Ok, fair enough.
Even if I don't believe it will have edram, I bet the GPU willl be a pretty standard part with its (external) memory pool.

On a different subject.... I'm now thinking about the size of the unit.

With the PSTwo, there seems to be an indication that Sony has opted for the no HDD route - they are not even providing an external HDD.

The PS2 was designed with a HDD in mind. Even though 1st Japanese versions require an external HDD, within ~6mths the lower rectangle beneath the PS2 was emptied(more or less) to make way for an internal HDD. Without counting HDD space, the PS2 is really just the size of the upper rectangle!

*If* there is no HDD planned, and an aggressive/expensive cooling solution used for 1st launch shipments, the PS3 unit *may* be smaller than a PS2 unit.

My 2c.

Well if they go no hdd for the ps3 how will micro transactions be handled ? How would u say update gt5 with new cars and tracks ? Sure you can fit some stuff on a memory card if they go 64 megs like ms . Or they can go memory stick duo but even that has limits . Thats 1 gig sticks for 100$ .

For that price they could put in a hardrive of a good size , heck they can prob make 50-80$ off a 20 gig drive at the 100$ price point . The diffrence is

People with memory sticks will buy less transactions as the transaction + memory stick will end up costing alot to the consumer in the long run .

So how would they handle it ?

That is why i think it will come with a hardrive

That's the point. :devilish:

But you have a point too.

Yea , you got my ponit where if people have to keep buying memory sticks they will end up buying less micro transactions right ?

just making sure that came across right

Good reasoning for an HD. I guess it depends hom much Sony think they can pass the cost onto end users or not. Not having an HD would certainly make d'loadable content, all that up-and-coming iPod jazz, difficult to manage.

Regards bandwidth, what does the FlexIO do? It's got 75 Gb/s shared between GPU and something else. Why is there talk of only 40 Gb/s shared between CPU and GPU? Whers's that FlexIO data going? Or is the limitation the RAM?

I think they still take a license fee for every stick sold tho'. Not having an HD and forcing users to buy bucketloads of expensive MemSticks would be good for Sony's bankbalance

I don't think it's gonna happen. Not including a HDD and forcing customers to buy very expensive MS's would be suicide.
Permanent storage should either be there from the beginning, so that it becomes a feature to be used extensively, and for developers to find ways to enhance the experience, like a HDD to enhance games, like the double screen on DS, or it shouldn't be there at all.

Removable MS's would take the place of Memory Cards. No real new features other than saving content or save games. Just very big memory cards.

Since the E3 PS3 topic was locked, I put it here though it's a bit offtopic. According to the today's entry in the blog of Turumi 600 (producer of Michael Jackson's Moonwalker at SEGA and R&C at SCEI), he joined Kutaragi and his guys at a bar in a hotel in Santa Monica. Apparently SCE guys were back from the rehearsal for the SCE press conference. Though it's unclear whether it's due to the Xbox 360 unveiling or not, they were very cheerful and confident, more so than ever, especially Kutaragi ;)

I guess the made quite a profit with memory cards this generation. At least in Europe these are ridiculously expensive. Why would they use memory sticks and forego this source of revenue?

They make profits on MS's, probably even bigger ones at that too. Or do you really think a 1GB MS costs $100 to make?
