[PS3] Infamous

Tom Chick is retarded, IMO.

For instance, how long did he play the game? His 5th point describes not being able to easily drop down on ledges.

The demo taught me how to do this within 5 minutes. Press circle.

smh.

Weird. Eurogamer seemed to mention that dropping down wasn't easy as well.

To that I'll say Eurogamer also recently reviewed an MMO after a mere 30 minutes of play time. They also said that Resistance 1's multiplayer was broken because of a certain weapon (one that actually is only in the Single player, so they never played MP).

Some sites deserve credit, and IMO, neither of those sites are deserving of credit.

Here's the thing. You can run up to a ledge and jump off, or you can press the Circle button to grab onto the ledge below. You can also jump off, turn around and "hover" back to the ledge. There are many ways to do it. But, pressing circle is the quickest and easiest way. I'd assume both of these outlets either didn't pay attention when the game was giving them tips, or just watched the recent blitz of media and decided to review those and not the game itself.

The list has some insights but some of the points are superfluous. He should change the titles to the exact number of points he has, or just condense his article to 10 points as "advertised". Most people are not interested in trivlal remarks like how to spell inFamous anyway.

It makes people feel like he's trying to nitpick for negatives. Who cares how long it takes for social order to crumble ? He used one anecdotal example "Escape from New York" as if it's a law or something too.

Worse of all, he misspelled the main character's name all the time (Cole -> Coll -> Cull). Is he rushed for time or for some reason had to pad his article last minute ? He should probably proof read his next article (Top 10 good things about inFamous ?) more carefully. I don't have high hope for it.

I remember Cole is rather sticky. So it should be easy to attach to a nearby surface and move around. I believe pressing "O" means "release/drop". So it makes sense to use the button, but judging from the article, perhaps the poor author is out of time.

The thing about Tom Chick is that his taste is very much not the taste of the mainstream. I don't agree with him 80% of the time, but most often he has good reason for saying stuff he says. But for instance, Tom Chick wrote a scathing review of Deus Ex -- very much against the norm at the time. But here's the thing: I can't really see any of the points he made there and say that he's wrong. Just that maybe despite all the very valid points he made, the game's still a good game. So it's a strange situation of me not really caring as to his conclusion when it comes to reviews/previews, but caring about the points he makes.

On the circle issue, he made the following comment on fidgit:

Again, just a quick reminder that this is in no way a final verdict in inFamoUs, which I mostly like, as I'll demonstrate tomorrow. If you're looking for a combat sandbox, this isn't a bad one. Neither is it a great one.

Also, for those of you reminding me about the circle button to dangle from ledges, I look forward to you fumbling around trying to use it for Co'al to get the many blast shards positioned just below the ledges, rails, walls, and overhangs where the circle button does absolutely bupkis. Ah, good times.

Exactly. Tom Chick is one of the most entertaining writers in the gaming press, but his tastes can be very esoteric and he'll get hung up on things no one else would even notice. He is also prone to really loving certain games that many people can't get in to.

Pro-tip: When he misspells Cole's name it is a running joke in the article.
Pro-tip 2: He says right in the introduction this list is only half of his opinion on the game.
Pro-tip 3: Google his "Shoot Club" stories.

I have the game and it's surprised me how good it is. It controls like a dream - I have a little bit of trouble dropping down from some ledges (mainly when looking for shards) but otherwise it's great. I also think that the in-game character animation for missions is very poor.

Funny thing is, I got about 15+ blast shards in the Demo, easily, dropping onto ledges, hovering, and basically using my abilities to my advantage. I never felt like I had any difficulty, but then again, I actually knew what I was doing and didn't just write up a ridiculous article for hits, as Tom Chick so often does.

It has nothing to do with his tastes, he's a sensationalist. Period.

OK...well I have the full game and there are some instances where you'll want to drop from a pillar to the wall below or to the side, and it's almost impossible. Only happened a couple of times - but it did frustrate me. And i do know what I'm doing...

I don't understand how it's almost impossible.

You press circle, and he drops down to grab the ledge. In the event that the blast shard is lower than the ledge, position yourself above it, drop, and hover.

Maybe I need to wait until I get the full game, but my experience with Tom Chick leads me to believe he's just being the typical sensationalist journo he has been since day 1.

Edti: To be clear, my problem is that a lot of Tom Chicks view points are not founded. He often makes points that are based on incorrect information. Just as he has done in this article. To say one thing, and then later come back and say "well, there are a few instances where it's difficult" is ridiculous. That is my problem. I have no qualms with people who dislike the game, that's their opinion. I do have issues with someone who writes factually incorrect statements, only to later retract his thoughts and write something different all together.

Do you have to be completely still (no directional hint) in order to drop?

And then he adds the top 10 Cool stuff

Dude, no need to circle the wagons, reviews are generally positive. People are allowed to dislike parts of the game.

He wasn't even dissing the game! Some people are being way too quick with their guns. It was a 'ten things I hate' article which is not the same thing as a proper review. Neither is the 'ten things I like' article. I could write plenty of 'things that bug me about such-and-such a game' of games that I absolutely love!

So enough of this! This is a game thread. Discuss the game, not the opinions of journo's and bloggers!

Hah, I don't know who Tom Chick is.

His article has some good insights but I am not sure if it's entirely accurate (The pressing "O" button part). I don't get the running joke on Cole's mispelled name. It made me read the unnecessarily long article a few times just to understand how many characters there are in the game :devilish:

Disclaimer: I haven't read the Top 10 Cool Things about inFAMOUS. Probably not going to (I think reading forum posts is more entertaining and credible).

Apparently it's worse than Assassin's Creed.
Time to cancel preorders.

Ah, something like this is more powerful and informative ! Would be nice if betan could provide a source though.

I finally played the demo, good stuff. The graphics are good and the amount of chaos you can cause is really cool. The frame rate holds up really well with the combat and explosions.

Can't wait for the 26th, Amazon better not let me down.

Well, the demo certainly left a solid impression on me. The fighting and exploring are better than Assassin's Creed IMHO.

The rest is up to how they put everything together for the entire game. It would have been released by the time I am back. So I might just pick it up.

This. Oh man, I will be dancing my way out of work to come home and fire this up.

I just forced myself to leave the demo, oh how fun it is. I am sure I will be playing it again some more this weekend!
