[PS3] Infamous

Just got done playing the demo. Before I say anything else, that's how you do a demo. It was long and gave me good idea how the game will be. Unfortunately for infamous, while it wasn't at all bad, I'll probably wait a long while for the price to drop before I pick it up. Just didn't grab me like I thought it would.

Do you have to be completely still (no directional hint) in order to drop?

Umm...I don't think that's accurate, I think it depends. But in some tricky situations, standing still and pushing away from the wall is the best way to drop down. It really isn't much of a problem.

Played the demo...not very impressed.

What really punches me in the face is the unskipable horrible attempt at a story and acting. Below average low budget video game presentation at best. If it's like that in the full game (and not something half baked exclusively for the demo) then i'm not even laughing.

Graphics are ok, framerate is mostly decent, there are annoying pauses here and there that break the fast action, animations are extremelly bad and floaty, explosions and damage are wonderfull, the gameplay and objectives are pretty boring after the first 5 minutes.

I dunno, maybe the game grows on you, but judging on the demo it's a 6 out of 10 for me.

The animation of Cole is really impressive. Seamless, smooth, and really great to control.

The story/acting in the cutscenes (comic) are really great. The in-game acting isn't so great. Rating a full game on a demo is not right, rating a demo from a demo is.

I wasn't interested in this game at first. However, after playing Assassin's Creed and discovering how much I like an easy jumping and climbing tall buildings mechanic, I'm looking forward to it now. I'm hoping it'd have that mechanic I just mentioned and at the same time do better with things that ultimately made me give up on Assassin's Creed (in memory block 6 out of total 7, when it becomes one fight after another just to see the next part of a story I'm not in love with).

Specifically, I'm not too keen on most of the activities I do in Assassin's Creed. The thing I enjoy most is reaching for a high viewpoint to mark the map. My least favourite part is fighting a group of enemies and this is what I hope inFamous will satisfy me much more. Right now, I'm quite optimistic about this.

After playing the demo for an hour or two, this game is pretty much what I had hoped for since playing Assasin's Creed a few months ago. It has the easy climbing and hopping that I love, accompanied by 3rd-person shooter combat which I'm fine with. I'll buy this game for sure.

I've experienced quite a few of the AI clipping in the game. I've also fallen through the game world.

I still find the character animation (ie. for the voice acting scenes) poor and distracting, but the animation for Cole is wonderful, especially when it means he controls so well. It's a shame they didn't get GTA4 quality animation for the acting, but I guess they're relying on the comic book sections, which are great.

I also think it's a bit odd when you start a side-mission they say "there's reapers attacking the police station over there!" - and you think, they weren't just a second ago. They then suddenly appear (not in front of you...but off-screen).

I have played the demo quite a few times now. Initially I died a lot, but now its awesome fun to me. I go towards eachmission differently now and own the reapers completely.

It is supposed to be a comic book game, and it excels in that.

Considering I never like superhero games, I am likling this demo a lot. It is fun to discover how his powers behave. In one of the missions if you are standing on top of the engine of a Train, then his power doesn't drain at all, even if you keep throwing those grenades and stuff around. I wrecked the whole area while riding on top of the train :) !

He controls very well, which is a feat in itself. !

I love it !

It's true that. I don't like superhero or open world games, but i am enjoying InFamous. hard to say why - I think it's the platforming that does it. I love platforming games.

So essentailly, it's not real enough for you? I'm glad to take a break from the hyper realistic boring and dull garbage this generation has brought us. Bring on more stylized games like this that actually have personality.

To each their own.

Though, I have to ask why you think the cutscenes aren't skippable, because they very much are.

That stuff is awesome and done very good imo, really gives the comic vibe its going for.

The demo was great and lots of fun jumping around:D

We have seen so many repetitive inFamous trailers before. So it should not surprise people how the graphics look like. I personally find it ok.

The gameplay is what's fresh about the demo. Duking it out with the street thugs is more eventful than I thought. Like RenegadeRocks, I died a lot too. That city is dangerous !

I am curious about Assassin Creed comparison though. I stopped playing AC very early (Like in second level). inFamous gave me a different vibe altogether.

This games been on a my radar for a couple of years but it's not one I've been particularly jazzed about. Having downloaded it on a whim and played the demo - to death - several times, I'm really looking forward to it.

Maybe I'm not paying attention but I don't see what the problem is with the graphics, they serve their purpose which is, for the most part, to hold up when things hot up or outright get insane. Sure it's not GTA IV but the graphics do the environments justice in creating a great atmosphere. The in-game animation isn't as good as some other games but again, it does it's job.

Where the game shines is in the gameplay, which really hits the sweet spot. I've never been into superhero games, never played Hulk or Spidey but the sense of freedom and power this game gives has really grabbed me and coupled with the great combat mechanics - there appears to be no law of diminishing returns in the fun that can be had in zapping people in a million different ways - I can see myself playing this game a lot, not just to complete it but just because it is fun to play.

Off for another playthrough, I'm not even playing the missions anymore, just exploring the reaches of the island that each missions permits. I actually found some cops fighting reapers yesterday, I thought the cops were all gone but they're out there.

From what I'm hearing from podcasts and other familiar game-journalists, the game is generally received really, really well with people mentioning that the game has its flaws and such and isn't technically the best game, but they go on to say that it's the most fun they've had with a game in a long time. It gives a GTA vibe in that sense. It also seems to appeal more to 360 owners than other PS3 games seems to have done - maybe it scratches that Crackdown itch ...

Personally I don't think the game is for me. I didn't think so before the demo, and I don't think so after the demo. I can definitely see the appeal for others, although I'm still surprised at how much people generally seem to like this game.

Apparently the demo unlocks inFamous t-shirts in Home as well.

The way I look at open world games, their gameplay mainly consists of 2 basic elements: 1) getting around in the world, 2) combat.

For GTA4, Assassin's Creed and inFamous, these mostly come down to:
GTA4 (1) driving vehicles (2) third person shooter
AC (1) easy climbing, platforming + a bit of horse riding (2) some kind of fencing system
inFamous (1) easy climbing, platforming + some rail grinding (2) third person shooter

There can be mini games, but these open world games are mostly about mixing (1) & (2) in various ways.

As implemented in
GTA4 (finished the story in recent weeks): I'm ok with (1) and like (2).
AC (played up to "block 6" a few months ago): I love (1) but hate (2).
inFamous (only played the demo): I love (1) and like (2) so far.

Of course, story plays a big part in my enjoyment of games, but that's not what I was thinking when I said AC let me discover my potential love for inFamous.

For the talk about aliasing and pop in, I don't notice much of those when I'm actually playing. I also think the extent of these problems are not worse than GTA4. I often see grasses popping in just a few meters in front of my character in GTA4. I take it to mean these problems simply come with this type of game on current consoles.

I heard that the game engine used for inFamous was actually basically a multi-platform one, not one specific to the PS3. Apparently the next Sly Cooper is going to target the PS3 hardware much more specifically. I think John mentioned this on this weekend's ListenUP podcast.

If this is the case and there are no particular technical hurdles it would be nice to think that 360 owners might one day get a chance to play this - without buying a PS3 that is. AFAIK Sucker Punch are truly independent, indeed IIRC they are mostly ex-Microsoft people so may be amenable to a 360 port or allowing someone else to do it.

I'd be willing to bet money that Sony owns the Infamous IP, though.

Without wishing to go off-topic - inFamous FTW, woot etc - how does that happen? Would Sony gave gone to Sucker Punch with the idea and commissioned a game based on their IP or would have they acquired the I.P. along the development cycle, you know some Sony exec sees the game and the next thing you know a horses head turns up in somebody's bed, i.e. Sony made Sucker Punch an offer it couldn't refuse?

I'm pretty sure Sucker Punch are owned by Sony!
