PS3 High Quality Blu-ray Player?

Mythos

Regular
Here is a quote from digital bits about PS3 blu-ray player quality....

"20th Century Fox has finally, officially unveiled their first batch of Blu-ray Disc titles, timed to coincide roughly with the November release of Sony's BD-equipped PlayStation 3 game system (which, believe it or not, sources are telling us may be the best and most fully-tested and functional BD player on the market initially)."

In addition I wanted to add that this MAY speak to some concerns of the blu-ray piece causeing the PS3 launch some grief...thoughts?

Gosh i hope so but these early units invariably have problems that are quickly rectified in future revisions. I think now we may be better positioned to react with firmware updates whereas that wasnt nearly as prevalent with the launch of DVD. Here's to hoping, after the PS3 i'm fresh out of HDMI ports!

Who's dibital gits?
Is there a link to that?

So what do you know? There's more big high-definition news today. 20th Century Fox has finally, officially unveiled their first batch of Blu-ray Disc titles, timed to coincide roughly with the November release of Sony's BD-equipped PlayStation 3 game system (which, believe it or not, sources are telling us may be the best and most fully-tested and functional BD player on the market initially).

I thought the worry was more about the drive breaking down quickly than about BR compatibility.

Indeed - in addition there are generally concerns over image quality with consoles typically producing an inferior image to a dedicated box but with the Samsung BR box the PS3 should be able to compete a bit better.:p

It will be interesting to see how they market the ps3 this gen. I could see them targeting 100% outside of traditional gamers eyes as the ones who would pay 5-6 bills for a console already know about it. Might as well start building the image of a "media playing device" and softening that audience to the idea of ps3 competing in this realm while bypassing the gamers outright. Then next year before Christmas they can start to sprinkle some game ads in as the cost should be a bit lower and availability higher. In the meantime hi-end av buyers have cash and most gamers don't so it'd be a smart ad campaign if done right.

On paper, PS3 compares very favourably with any BD player in the pipe, as far as I know. HDMI 1.3, Dolby TrueHD decoding etc. It's very well specced.

well the bar is set pretty low, so one would expect the ps3 to be better since its the flagship of BD...thats not to say that it will be "high-quality", just higher than the current players, which in this case is the samsung

I would like to correct the misconception that Samsung is a low quality brand. In terms of bang-for-buck, it is now approximately where Sony was 30 years ago--(nearly) all of the quality, none of the mark-up. Smart consumers should catch the "Korean Wave" before the rest of the world does and jacks up the price of Korean goods. (I buy Korean mid-range electronics much more these days, but am still taking a wait-and-see on their cars.)

Also, there are few economic or technical reason why the PS3 can't be a high quality BD player. DVD players had analog video outputs, and high quality analog stages are expensive these days when they have to operate alongside so much high-EMI digital electronics. Cheap DVD players looked crappy largely because of their cheap analog stages. But the PS3 has digital video out, so even if Sony cuts corners on the analog outputs, there's still a high quality digital out available. The quality of the image will be entirely determined by the software algorithms used for decoding and reconstructing the frames. The only way then that the PS3 will be a subpar player would be if it doesn't have the compute resources to apply all the high-end playback algorithms.

just for clarification, i wasnt implying that samsung was a low quality brand,...when there are 2 players on the market, one will be better than the other, hence my setting the bar low phrasing, if there were more than for people to claim the ps3 as the best blu-ray player, it would have more meaning...i was just saying that the ps3 should be higher quality because most of the studios are relying on it for marketing purposes

So you think that when the PS3 is released that other blu-ray players would not be in the market?

Also, the quote is stating "MAY be the best " blu-ray player.

i dont think that at the time the "sources" saw the ps3, that they had access to any other CE's working blu-ray players

the "sources" may just be going by specs

I expect that the PS3 should be a top-class Blu-Ray player all through it's life, as it's just a drive with software (Cell-powered) decoding. So it should be able to support anything on a Blu-Ray disk (even if it didn't before) with just a software update.

Unless HDMI 2.0 comes along or some other new fancy connector stuff.

If I remember correctly the DVD player in PS2 was susposed to be a mid level quality. Hmmm I had a Panasonic mid level player at the time. Guess what the the DVD playback on the PS2 was awful. The BR player in PS3 will be bog standard.

Don't know where the myth of "bog standard DVD quality " of PS2 comes from.
I recently plugged it in my front projector and for curiosity checked some DVD's, and I couldn't see any glaring image anomalies, nothing that wasn't caused by connecting with s-video and viewed from 90" screen.
There was no colour banding that's often seen in cheaper DVD players (and in the xbox), the blacks were solid though the PS3 doesn't quite display as deep black as my standalones have, colours in places and sharp image, no motion artefacts and blocking...
I certainly didn't see much difference when I replaced the PS2 with a standalone mid priced player earlier when I viewed them on my 52" crtrptv. The differences that I saw then was also caused by different connection mainly.

In what areas did you find the PS2 playback to be awful compared to mid level Panasonic player, except for ergonomics obviously?

You can browse the web for original reviews of the DVD capabilities of the PS2 when it was launched. They are generally quite favorable.

There are so many assumptions in that posts and so many incorrect facts that it's not even worth replying.
