Getting more interesting... :)

NetBlender will release an SDK to allow Blu-ray players to talk to iPhone and iPod Touch. It is bi-directional (iPhone controls Blu-ray player and vice versa):

It's a technology that is built into our professional Blu-Ray authoring tool that will allow studios, independent movie companies to enable BD Touch features.
These features send data in two directions from the Disc to the Iphone and vice versa. Video, Audio, text, and player commands can be sent.

So right now it seems everyone likes the "remote control" idea. However the player can control the IPhone as well. One idea is to automatically pull up IMBD of the movie you are watching right on your Iphone or send the movie information a movie database on your phone. The ideas are only limited to what people want and will use.

We are releasing an SDK for the 100k Iphone developers out there so they can take advantage of BD Touch features to build applications that easily work with all kinds of titles.

Where digital copy is concerned, Fox and Apple already have a similar deal for DVD and iPod since last December. Managed Copy/Portable Copy are around the corner for Blu-ray players too:

I found the BD Touch SDK here: http://www.netblender.com/technology/bdtouch_sdk.asp

... for anyone who's interested to develop iPhone app that can interact with NetBlender-enabled Blu-ray players.

Some of the capabilities of the BD Touch Connect SDK include:

* Receive audio and video from the Blu-ray Disc.

* Receive current information about the Blu-ray Disc that is playing such as the title's name, the studio, the current audio and subtitle settings, the current chapter, and more.

* Send text messages to the Blu-ray Disc.

* Unlock hidden features on the disc.

* Send audio or video from the iPhone to the Blu-ray Disc.

* Send Blu-ray player commands such as “Fast Forward”.

* Receive URL commands from the Blu-ray Disc such as go to a specific website, or download an iTunes movie or song.
...

If you're interested in exploring the Blu-ray player side (with or without BD Touch), this wiki article outlines the use of Eclipse for development:

However, to deploy the app, it seems that a certain BDJ.jar file is needed.
