PS3 firmwares 2.0 and 2.10

Time to draw some queer rainbows

...

On topic, I wouldn't say Sony is slow about adding features..certain features, certain important features, yes, but if you were to list all the updates made in the last 12 months, it'd make for quite a long list. It's disappointing there's still not in-game messaging..I guess we can just hope it'll be there by Spring or thereabouts.

I can see the frustration though. Of lots of features, for a lot of folk there's a head-scratching moment when you wonder why more important features haven't been added. I think we're all guessing it's because of parallel development of HOME and the two systems being closely linked, such that in game chat etc. won't be introduced until HOME launches.

Fair enough. :)

It's one of those things you have to experience to learn you can't do without it I guess.

Unless of course you don't care for online at all / don't have any friends on the system...

It's just that almost every single time I turn on my 360, I start with talking to a friend or two while browsing the marketplace before I start my game. It's great, and there's no way back IMO.
I had a 360 and I hated it.

Always popping up saying such and such has sent you a message, someone wants to talk to you or someone has come online.

"F#'$ OFF i'm gaming!!"

Agree, totally. I've been happy with the pace and frequency of updates, but less happy with the apparent prioritisation of certain features.

If anything, it's a sign this stuff is hard to do. Especially when it's an afterthought...
I don't think it's easy either, but 12 months for basic communication features seems like eternity, considering how many various communicators are out there and how much resources OS is eating on PS3.
Of course we want more, but at the same time look at how PS3 firmware has progressed! Lots added. Things just sadly take to much time! People's expectations for desired features pegged them at a 2.0 firmware on hope rather than anything. The complaint should be 'we want these features, dammit!' and not 'these features should have been added because this is a n.0 firmware number!' ;)
The complaint is "these features should have been added a long time ago". The fact that 2.00 suggests something big and the long time since last update (+ jackasses who made up rumours a couple weeks ago) made people expecting more features in the new update.

Huge disapointment. In game XMB should have been the main feature of 2.0, they know how badly everybody wants it. What is stopping them from doing this?

Not everyone wants it. In fact, a lot of people do not want it. Myself included. I do wish it was an option for people who do want it though.

I hate it when the message alert blocks a key part of the screen (especially part of the radar at the corner). I supposed they could enhance the UI further.

Truth to be told, Sony may still be working on that long list of wish list people submitted over the official blog.

Live demo of firmware 2.0:
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2007/11/07/firmware-200-video-demonstration/

EDIT:
I want to say...

I am encouraged by their initiative to do this video on the blog in a personal way. Just a couple of things to take note:

* The video is too small (and resolution too low) to read the screen.

* It would be much better if the camera could zoom into the screen to show the highlights.

The purpose is to communicate the feature set (not to show off PS Eye). To demo PS Eye, use another platform/tool/mechanism.

Wake On Lan is really fricking cool, and I'm glad they implemented it.

However, in my heart of hearts it would be much cooler if they implemented in-game XMB access, Friend List access and cross-game invites. I wonder why these things are posing such a problem for SCE?

With playlists available, the only thing I really want is divx/xvid support. In game XMB is nice, but for me at least, it's not that important. I'm not that much into multiplayer games though...

As far as I remember, the PS2 didn't have any firmware update mechanism.

Kudos to Sony for providing regular updates to the PS3 OS, adding more features like DVD upscaling (and the best upscaler I have seen, wipes the floor with my DVD recorder's built-in upscaler), being able to access videos and music on a PSP anywhere in the world from the PS3 HDD, combine that with PlayTV...

I'm not about to start ranting on at them because the arbitrary number they've assigned to this particular update happens to be a whole number.

They probably weren't friends then. ;)

To both: turn it off. And devs decide where the toasts are placed by the way, so go blame them if it blocks your game.

You see? It's perfect for everyone! :p

As mentioned previously, it's plausible these features are being so closely integrated with HOME that they have been postponed dependent on HOME's development. If, when HOME is released, these features aren't included, then there is cause serious complaint as it suggests Sony's priorities are just wrong.

The toasts / pop-ups / message alerts / notifications.

Or don't sign in at all if you don't care for friends / online.

Shouldn't they improve the alerts such that they only show up when I indicated that I am ready to see them ? The first "ping" can be iconic and translucent just to signal to me that something is pending.

Why should I turn the entire thing off just because of an annoying flaw ?
e.g., I need to be signed on while playing online games.

I'm not sure if you have a 360 or how much Live experience you have. You're greatly exaggerating the interruption that the notifications cause. The amount of times I've died in a FPS or went off the track in a driving game due to a notification can be counted on one finger.

They are very seamless. There is no pause of hitch during gameplay. A simple message comes on in varying sized windows with a quick summary of the message and disappears just as fast and seamlessly. At this point you can choose to pause the game and explore it further or keep on playing. If for whatever reason, you want them off, that's easy to do also. Game invites will disappear on their own if you don't open up the message.

I'll take the current system that gives me a quick message and doesn't force me to pause the game vs a ping/indicator and me having to interrupt the game to see what the message is.

2.0 is now available for download via PSN.

Just downloaded it and the information board was abit of a let down, mainly since I imported a JAP console to Norway and the message I get now, is that the RSS Information board only works in japanese, please change language to japanese in the system menu.

So I assume the information board uri is hardcoded to certain feeds that is decided by the region of your console.
Not that it really bothers me, its just on of those things that happens when you import stuff :D

Someone should test that "Some XMB settings slow down framerates" bug when 2.0 is released.

Over on the Linux kernel side, there have been some optimization in SPU scheduling recently too. ^_^ Can't wait for the next update.
