PS2 outselling XBox 360

On G4TechTV someone mentioned that preorders for GoW were as high as Halo2.

So maybe there will be a comparable bump in console sales as when Halo2 came out, which was the only quarter the gaming division was profitable for MS?

Sony PlayStation 3 U.S. Sales Fall Short of Target (Update3)

By Dina Bass

Dec. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp. sold 197,000 PlayStation 3 consoles in the U.S. during November, missing its goal for initial shipments by half after parts shortages slowed production, market researcher NPD Group Inc. estimated.

Nintendo Co.'s Wii, which also was introduced last month, sold 476,000 units, Port Washington, New York-based NPD said today in an e-mail. The Microsoft Corp. Xbox 360, on the market for the past year, sold 511,000 machines.

...

Sony's last version, the PlayStation 2, was more popular than all three of the newer machines, selling 664,000 units.

Good find!
Interesting numbers, though not very surprising, well the very strong performance of PS2 did come to me as a little surprise, but other than that nothing major there. It seems that the EA dude was right on the money when he said that PS3 shipments were cut in half. It will be interesting to watch what kind of flow of units Sony manages to put into the market in these coming months. Nice boost for X360 compared to previous months, but naturally that was expected, I wonder how long it'll take for it to overtake PS2 in monthly sales, it's starting to look like a price cut is needed for that.

Well MS may be pulling out all the stops short of a general price cut to boost the numbers and reach that 10 million goal.

As noted in this forum, a lot of deals to be had at selected retailers and some local/regional ones as well.

The 500k is the first time it's reached that figure. The question is what happens after the Holidays?

those numbers run only through the 25th (as stated about 3 times on this forum in the other threads where this is being discussed) and the actual sales predictions for 360 in Nov '06 are a couple hundred thousand more than the 511,000 reported.

Not bad for a console at over 3x the cost as a PS2 IMO.

PS2 sales only reaffirms what most of us already knew .. it has a deep rich library that appeals to everybody. At a time when its successor is on the market, and well past its supposed saturation point, it has not lost a step, and I would not be surprised to see it lead the market (sans handhelds) for another couple of years.

A couple of years? I kinda of doubt that. I think the fact that the PS2 is still being supported by developers with new games has just as much influence as a giant library. I expect that support to die soon, as now all three new consoles are on the market and the potential for higher sales will migrate to the newer platforms over time. Once support dies and the newer consoles see price drops, PS2 sales will take a big hit.

@ writer: ps2 is only 129USD; what do u expect??? 400USD system to outsell 129USD system??? next gen is not really necessary atm imo

there arent many good games, many nextgen systems are faulty, many people dont have HDTV, and of course its more expensive. if u expect 360 to outsell ps2 atm then u obviously have mistaken

btw, 360 outsold ps3 last month. get on with that

So with just over 1 million for December, the 360 is going to hit 5 million in the U.S.?

How about in the dollar amount?

PS2 664K @ $130 = $86M
360 511K @ $400 = $205M
WII 476K @ $250 = $119M
PS3 197K @ $600 = $118M

PS: At this pace, Sony could have just survived with PS2 without PS3. :p

Hong.

THat's assuming that all sales come from Premium systems, which is not true.

PS3 is officially the worst launch ever.

Yeah, I'm really suprised that Sony botched it this badly. I thought the PS2 could have launched better, and that launch was still way better than this one. PS2 at least had mindshare and a clear power advantage over dreamcast from the get go (even if only a few games showed it, the specs were rediculously in favour of the PS2 and, damn did MGS2 demo look great). PS3 has...aparently nothing. Last time all dev's were saying PS2 roolz Dreamcast droolz (in comparison technically), now its more like PS3 MAY roolz a bit more than X360, but the diff won't be large. And then Sony goes ahead and charges us 200 more, and gives us 200k units for 300M people. Gee, Blu-Ray better be good.

I think the fact that the Ps2 outsells the xbox 360 should be very worrying to Mi... Sony! If the price is that much of a player in the game industry, how about an even more expensive console? such as the ps3?

In addition to price, I too believe the general feeling is that the xbox 360 isn't a very reliable piece of hardware (overheats and noisy), which might hurt its sales as well.

Not true. Someone already posted the numbers for handhelds, and the sheer amount of GameBoy Advances still being sold is MIND BOGGLING. So, Sony having 2 different semi competing products on for sale, targetting similar markets ISNT going to make much of a difference.

And...if you 'believe' the 'general feeling' is that the 360 is noisy and hot. Your grossly mistkaen. Microsoft had a run of what, 2 months with machines that experienced POSSIBLE excessive noise and heat?? Now its a year later and those problems are long gone.

Gameboy Advance hasn't impacted DS with it's high sales. PS2 won't influence 360 or PS3 sales. Especially as time progresses.

[EDIT: yes, thank you scooby_dooby!]

You didn't get my point: I said that if price is a big factor in the gaming industry, and the fact that PS2 still outsells the Xbox 360 (a much superior gaming system) proves that it is, Sony will have an even harder time selling the PS3 (just because it is more expensive)!

I'd NOT be surprised if you could walk in a BB by as early as January and pick up a ps3 off the shelves.

Also, embedded in PS3 success or failure is a lot more than gaming for Sony.

Concerning the xbox 360, I didn't say it was a fact or that I believe it is still true, but the feeling still is. It is probably still quite noisy, though.

I think the point was that the market is obviously extremely price sensitive, moreso than people had predicted, that doesn't bode well for maintaining demand at a $500-600 pricepoint.

traded in my launch unit last week (it still worked but I took advantage of my extended warranty) and the new system is cool and quiet.

much more so than the launch unit.

In fact the ONLY time you hear the thing is when the DVD spins up. You don't hear the fans at all.

Thank you for the info! I'm considering one myself, was just waiting for better hardware to hit the market. Interesting that they made changes to the hardware without releasing a new version, how odd.
