Porsche calls Nissan cheaters!

No it didn't, a heavily modified version won Le Mans, I think a heavily modified Veyron would decimate all at Le Man seeing as it is mainly straights.

The GTR was 85 kg lighter at 915kg, but the engine output was lowered to 600 bhp because of regulations.

The Veyron is a 2 ton car. You would need to remove 500kg just to get the same power/weight ratio. You would still have a disadvantage because of the lower aero dynamic grip/weight which would give *much* longer braking distances and poorer cornering.

And then you would have to pit every other lap for fuel and tires.

Cheers

No doubt about that. The "Circuit de la Sarthe" is a very high speed track, i think 75% or so of a lap is full throttle. The 5 km long straight is a place where the Veyron would kill any competition.

Except the Mulsanne has had two chicanes for almost 20 years to limit top speeds, and 250mph was commonplace on it in the late 80s. Those cars could do that for 24 hours, and without pitting every 5 minutes for new tyres and fuel.

Le Mans isn't as prestigious as it is because of one long straight, and winning there takes a hell of a lot more than top speed.

No, one of the biggest thrills is going into a corner too fast and then finding out, in very quick succession, how good you and the car is :D

The next big thrill is then going into the corner too fast and knowing what you and your car can do whilst putting you passenger in the paragraph above ;)

Acceration is only fun on motorbikes with the front end coming up.
Exactly!

And I prefer a dirt track. ;)

You and dizi missed the point. Such a situation can't happen on public roads without driving way over the speed limit. Well, maybe a right turn at an intersection, but that's it. Acceleration is thrilling, safe, and legal.

You can be pulled over for accelerating too fast in the US. Might even get a ticket for wreckless driving. It's happened to a buddy of mine twice in one year and his license was suspended because of it. And honestly, what's the point of accelerating fast if you're only going to top it out at 50 - 70 MPH in order to keep it fairly legal?

Not that I don't accelerate fast on a weekendly basis on I80 or Highway 1 when there are no cars around and driving conditions are good. I guess if one can get away with it then yeah it can be quite a blast. But then again, driving in excess of 100 MPH on these roads is indeed fun, but I only do it when I have high visibility and there are no other cars on the road except when some friends and I are just cruising around.

But yeah, cornering is one of the best thrills of driving if you're doing it for spirited or competitive driving. Mastering a corner and then coming out of it at full WOT is a thrill like no other.

I don't think anyone can give you a ticket if you don't lose traction. And you don't like the feeling of acceleration even if it's just a few seconds? At Magic Mountain I'll wait in line for half an hour to get a few seconds each of acceleration and zero-G on the Superman ride.

I agree, but this line of conversation rose out of practicality and use of supercars off a track.

You can. I have received an "unnecessary acceleration" ticket without ever exceeding the speed limit or squealing the tires.
That's ridiculous. They can't even measure acceleration, and more importantly, how does acceleration endanger anyone? I'm pretty sure this is really easy to fight in court.

People and law enforcement need to understand that aggressive driving is about excessive lane changes, tailgating, and rapid braking. All those things endanger others. Acceleration is harmless.

EDIT: Googling shows that most codes require breaking traction to be a violation.

All this discussion of accerleration is making me miss my Senna which I havent seen in 4 months :( That is as close to a Bugatti straight line performance as I will ever get to probably.

Considering my friend blew $10,000 on a lawyer and it didn't help then yeah those tickets do work. Granted he did squeal his tires for a good 2 - 3 seconds for one of the offenses and this was at a stop light with two cops witnessing it.

A few seconds of acceleration can be fun of course. It gets old after a while if that's all I do on my drive. There are times where I'll take my car down to 40 MPH on an interstate and then go full throttle and reach 150 - 170 MPH in a matter of seconds. That can be quite fun and exciting and a really good time, but it happens on a rare occasion.

I never said I agree with it, heck I got a ticket for it! You can bet I wasn't happy ;)

This might not be a good reference, but here in Switzerland ... ;) ... they have a clause that practically gives the Police infinite freedom in fining who ever they like. Basically, any move or action taken by a driver that could be considered dangerous is subject to a fine, or in worse cases penalty etc.

It's not bad when you're driving like anyone else, but if you're in a posh car and are pulling to much attention, I wouldn't be giving any wrong signals to the police here that could be in any way turned against you.

Or like I do it - you just don't drive in Switzerland. :D

Just stop at an on ramp, :) 0-110 would be the same as 40-150 and you would be less likely to get as excessive a ticket.

Sense of speed at 150-170 is much more interesting than at 110mph. Not the same at all.

And he said acceleration not sense of speed. If he wanted a sense of speed then he should have said so. If you want a sense of speed get a motorcycle. If you just want speed get a jet.

I got pulled over for exhibition of acceleration in a 1978 corolla once :) talk about ridiculous. The cop just wanted to search the car.
