Playstation 5 [PS5] [Release November 12 2020]

That's interesting but does not explain why my AVR, which supports Dolby Atmos, does not enable Dolby Atmos for non Dolby Atmos compatible speakers? If what you say is correct it should not give a damn about what speakers are connected to it?

That doesn’t sound right, care to elaborate - probably should be moved to the AVR thread :)

Well, in the configuration it asked if the speakers were Dolby Atmos compatible. Since they are not, I said no. So now everytime I have Dolby Atmos content it defaults to Dolby True HD and Blurays that have Dolby Atmos don't even give me the option. Why would it ask if they are compatible if it doesn't matter?

Edit - Apparently my AVR does not support Dolby Atmos with 5.1 system or less. So it seems to be specific to my AVR for some reason.

Speakers are just dumb analog devices that take powered signals. There should be no "Atmos speakers" as there's no digital way to make a handshake between the speaker and the amplifier / receiver.
I guess your receiver is just scaling back to TrueHD if you don't have height channels.

Sony will probably be super happy if they can put it at 499 instead of 399, thats a lot of money "saved".
But is that an instance of "be penny-wise and pound-foolish" in this case? Talking about 100USD saving per console, that might sound foolish. But if they loose 50% of the install base du to not spending those extra 100USD per console, will that be a bigger issue in the end?

cause their wednesday event is all about games, didn't mention HW at all

Sony will limit their stock because they are losing money per console, until production costs come down. 399 and 499 seem about right with the 399 model being very hard to find early on.

Sony released the PS4 Pro on Nov 10th 2016 and the teardown video of that looks to be posted on youtube on the 11th. So if history is anything to go by....
You probably should re- think about making conclusions based on information missing, just because you have your wishes. This is Sony's playbook not yours, they will release info, either dumps or staggered according to the strategy they think is the best one. The rest of us, can just armchair and tear them apart with a 2020 hindsight.

Sony has said they want to transition people from PS4 to PS5 faster than any previous generations transition. That does not chime with a limiting stock play. Especially if XSS/XSX is available in abundance, they will most likely loose even more money that way.

mark cerny talked about a technical tear down and revealing the cooling solution. this has not happened and i think they never will now.

What are you talking about?

Firstly the tear down that Cerny was so chuffed to talk about cancelled, and they will limit sales on PS5 until the costs to produce come down!?

lol

teardown should be before sales date so i can make an informed purchase.

I'm not sure why folks are hung up on tear downs, seeing a tear down of the Xbox360 wouldn't have shown that the new lead free solder was prone to developing micro-cracks, teardowns of my launch PS4 or PS4 Pro didn't reveal both would sound like industrial blowers after 12 months, they don't help the consumer make an informed choice on anything. I want one because I have a long term obsession with heat sink and cooler design caused by being exposed to too much hardcore cooler porn as an impressionable teen during the Celeron 300A era, no other reason.

I've been wondering that. Is seeing whatever fan Sony put in there really that sexy? What's there to see? It's a green board with chips on it. And a fan or two.

No other company does such a thing, but you're welcome to your choice and wait for the tear down to realise you don't like the type of fan used and therefore will not be buying a PS5 (!?)
I would only ever care about the fan if it's loud or not, and I don't need to see it. My partner's Pro is pretty much constantly at 50Db of noise. So says my undoubtedly completely accurate iPhone app that measures Decibels and you can't tell me otherwise, it says so on the internet.
