News?

eurogamer said:
Phil Harrison will resign as president of SCE Worldwide Studios on 29th February 2008, Sony has just announced.

SCEI president and CEO Kaz Hirai will assume his responsibilities in addition to his current duties.

No reason has been given for Harrison's departure, and Sony has said it will make no further statements.

Harrison, one of the most recognisable faces in the games industry, has "made a tremendous contribution" to Sony since joining in 1992, the company said.

"As one of the founding members of SCE, Phil played a key role in the development and growth of the PlayStation business and our industry," Kaz Hirai said.

"It is sad to see him departing from SCE, but I wish to express my gratitude for his many invaluable contributions and also wish Phil the very best of luck in his future endeavours."

Harrison himself said: "The past 15 years at Sony Computer Entertainment has been the defining journey of my life so far. I am grateful to all the PlayStation family for their incredible support, guidance and friendship.

"It has been a privilege to serve as part of the team and be inspired by them on a daily basis. I am so proud of everything PlayStation has achieved and will continue to support its future in every way I can."

No word yet on where Harrison is going, or whether Sony plans to replace him or if Hirai will continue doing both jobs indefinitely.

Shame, he's the only one that didn't make himself look an ass everytime he spoke. (Not counting the Chewbacca incident obviously )

Straight to EA I bet after they realised Pete Moore is useless.

Crap. Didn't see this one coming, though he did seem a little more openly frustrated than usual when he made that comment about the failure of SCEJ (and SCEA) to recognise the importance of couch-gaming, even citing them directly: "noone in Japan plays games on the couch with friends or family". Though he did a similar thing to push SCEJ into recognising the importance of the online space.

A small bit of this I'm wondering which came first - this comment, or him leaving. I assume though that he probably decided he would leave once Home SDK 1.0 was out there for publishers, but I'm still surprised at it - I would have expected more information if this had been better planned.

To me, Phil was Sony's single most important man at this point. What he set in motion with SCE Worldwide Studios was very important to Sony's survival in the game space.

I'll be very interested to hear where he is going. I don't think Kaz will take on all his responsibilities indefinitely, surely that would be too much work?

Shame.

Among other stuff, the back-compat issue must have been hard to swallow for him too I guess...

That does seem to make some sense ... he can focus on casual games for all platforms, and it fits in with his comment of "I am so proud of everything PlayStation has achieved and will continue to support its future in every way I can"

The best PR guy ever, and a very committed man. I liked the way he put emphasis on original, innovative and ambitious projects. A little bit sad, but hey, good luck with your new duties Phil !

He 'll be missed  I was so looking forward to seeing him announce games at E3.....

Goodbye, Phill ! You were the face of playstation for all of us ...

Personally, I don't think he was a great PR guy at all. He was a great technical guy, who wasn't half bad at PR. Rather than being really PR savvy though, he just made good PR by making a lot of sense, being right a lot. ;)

He wasn't a PR guy, though..even if people often think every exec at a company is PR! He was Sony's best face though, I think.

I know he wasn't, what I tried to drive home is his articulate, well thought, eloquent manner of presenting, handling questions...

Atari? I thought they were perennially on the verge of bankruptcy or something? Quite a step down..

I wonder if they really did fire him for his recent critical comments..

Yeah there has been some getting "fired" for telling the truth, a shame but then that is how things are. Atleast their conscience is clean! :p

Big loss to Sony. Phil was sensible and has worthwhile vision. Is Kaz or anyone else going to be the sort of person to invest in the likes of EyeToy and SingStar? Maybe he's started something that they'll continue?

This Atari comment got me -
"This will take some time of course, but here we have fantastic gaming DNA formed at the birth of the industry...
They're Atari in name only! It'd like dressing a sheep in wolf's clothing and saying that sheep has the DNA of a wolf! Atari is was has been dead for years. Passing a name around is meaningless. The name is also irrelevant to the current market, and they may as well just start a bnew brand without the legacy of recent years of worthlessness.

Maybe Phil just thought he was going off the boil and fancied a change, there doesn't need to be an alteria motive to everything.

heh... Atari eh? The last games I played that were published by them was UT2004, Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes, and Unreal Championship. Maybe he can try and sway Epic back after the weirdness that has befallen Midway. ;) Of course, more realistically, if he's wanting to push into the more casual space, he'll be targeting Wii and possibly XBLA/PSN.

I've worked in big companies long enough to know that changing one guy at the top is going to change very little.

Most of the real work is done by guys way way bellow him. Those guys probably don't even get to talk to an executive like Phil on a regular basis. They report to their middle managers who report to their manager and so on.

Where execs do have their impact is when it comes time to rebalance the budgets. But even then, it's not like it comes down wholly to their discretion. There will be a commitee. Managers well bellow him basically have to beg and grovel at his feet and the budget commitee for whatever project or initiative their are pushing. Then well down the line if a project or initiative turns out to be sucessfull, the guys at the top can come out and take all the credit for it.

Not to say Phil won't be missed. There is certainly something to be said for having an excellent public face to represent a brand and the efforts of many large teams of people.

Wow, so thats Ken K. and now him leaving Sony

And whats up with Kaz handling all the duties? shouldnt Peter Dille and Jack Tretton get a piece of that pie? :p

Not to mention Peter Moore jumping ship, hmm seems alot of higher ups these days are making (not so)surprise departures...

I'll miss him as a Sony guy. It was always great watching/reading interviews about him
