Yeah you're right, i was focussing on the idiot-proof element without thinking of how silly it would really be... :D
Idiots not figuring out how to install/use the OS, while its explained in the manual - Not Sonys problem
Idiots figure out a way to fuck up the OS (Trust me, they WILL) and no way of fixing it yourself - Sonys problem.

I wouldn't expect an OS disc even in my wildest dreams. Highly doubtful.

They'll have to do something, perhaps they'll burn in an inital OS into an EPROM then do net upgrades or disk upgrades like the PSP. With all the space of BluRay I'm sure they can waste 256Mb to put an OS installer on each.

"Idiots figure out a way to fuck up the OS (Trust me, they WILL) and no way of fixing it yourself - Sonys problem." - it's a closed box system. With a simple journaling approach they can avoid idiots fucking it up by switching the power off (copy OS over, write to a log that you have put a new OS at diskblock XYZ, then update the boot record, if you restart replay the log and check the boot record matches).

Thats the theorie, but consider that
1.) The OS might contain bugs
2.) There will be alot interest to exploit those bugs (you know people like 'backups')
3.) That 'removeable HDD' means you can take out the HDD and place it on eg. a PSU.
4.) or you could hook it up to a PC for reason 2.)

Just adding a 'Install DVD' to every console seems to me the safest and simplest approach to avoid having people line up for 'Console Repairs' ;)
Might add a few Demos/Freebies to the DVD aswell.

Yes, some HD content, demos etc., as you often get with a demo disc, may as well slap it onto an OS installer disc.

Reminds me of people squeezing 3.5" drives into the Amiga A1200 case ;). So much more economical though, it'd be a good thing to do.

yes been there :p

"RSX video driver update disc" yay!!! Oh wait...

HAhaha! Good one.

Its weird that last generation every blasted xbox for being a "pc" (which it wasnt) but so many are applauding the PS3 for being more pc like...? Why does sony want people programming on thier "closed box" with Linux in the first place? Doesn't a user installable main boot drive introduce hacking directly to the PS3? It will only be a matter before hackers start imaging PS3 HDD and selling those... unless the Cell chip has exceptional in-built security... This whole flipflopping of roles between the two giants approach is more interesting that either the hardware or software debates really.

Imaging a PS3 HDD should be easy, but what is that going to get you?

A person would still have to somehow get around the flash based OS to play pirated games or whatever. The pirated game has to be accepted as a bootable game by the PS3 OS -- whether or not you can play around in Linux doesn't really matter.

Either way I don't think there will be much reason for most to care about modding their PS3 if the region free stuff holds true (I suppose its up to the publishers).

This shit started with 360 but i think it was bound to happend sooner rather than later.
