Official PSP Thread

Why weren't there any gaming videos of GT4 Mobile on PSP???
There are no official statements about the development progress, but since there was no TGS footage ... go figure. All we could do is speculate and thats I would like to avoid in this thread, if you find solid or official news about PSPs software feel free to post it here.

If you are pessimistic, you say that is because GT4M does not exist at the current time.

If you are optimistic, you say that they keep it under wraps (after all, there is no DS games at all, since I've yet to see a "confirmed" game video).

The truth lies somewhere between.

According to this GamesIndustry.biz article, both SN Systems and Metrowerks have announced the release of their development tools for $ony's forthcoming PlayStation Portable, with ProDG for PSP and CodeWarrior for PSP both now available for purchase! PSP will make use of twin MIPS R4000 32 bit processors running at max 333 Megahertz. One of these units is referred to as the Media Engine, and is to be used for sound, movies and I/O management.

In addition, the system will include a so-called VFPU floating point vector unit with calculation capability of up to 2.6 Gigaflops. This latter unit is meant for assisting the CPU in 3D calculations. Nice news indeed, however, $ony is also promising the highest level of copy protection for the PSP discs using both DiscID and AES encoding technology... to quote, "Assuming that one could build a machine that could recover a DES key in a second (i.e., try 255 keys per second), then it would take that machine approximately 149 thousand-billion (149 trillion) years to crack a 128-bit AES key. To put that into perspective, the universe is believed to be less than 20 billion years old."

What's the latest word on PSP region coding for games? Last I've heard was that it would include region coding.

The latest word, from what seems to be an official source, is 1,5 years old:

Playstation.com

As a portable device (i.e. not reliant on a TV), the PSP will also be free from region coding, meaning that PSP games from Japan and the US will work out of the box - good news for import fans.

UMD films are rumored to be, logically, region coded, though.

New info on PSP battery time.

PSP - hyfsad batteritid trots allt?

It says the game play time is better than expected, and would be up to 8 hours, making it level with DS, which has 6-10 hours.
Movie playback time is only 2.5 hours, which is considered a little low.
At music, it is 10 hours.

2 hrs continuous gameplay... mmmm.... That would mean a go every day on the train to go to work, one to come back, then it already needs to be charged... Not that i would want to be seen in public with a brand spanking new PSP, i do want to live after all.

You can see in the comparison pic, that the (pyuo pyuo) screenshot has some weird smudging around it. Propably because the image was pasted there on a photoshop or similar (I guess all the screenshots are fake).
That makes the GBA screen maybe a little smaller than it really is.

Battery life figures were not announced, but a company representative at the game show said it could support around two hours of continuous game play.

Ahem.
IGN people had a hands on experience with a battery powered model, and they said that after one hour of playing, battery meter was still at it's top bar(out of three bars) :\

DS looks surprisingly big, but that's the old design, isn't it?
It's the old design, but I don't think the new one is any smaller - it's just a lot prettier. I think that by going by official size/wieght specs, PSP is smaller (less volume) and lighter (by 15 or so grams)

Yeah probably with a dev model and some brick size battery attached :D Or maybe the battery meter was fixed at threee bars :D Seriously sth. has got to be wrong with battery life, else SONY wouldn't make such a big secret out of it!
