Official PSP Thread

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/01/18/sony_psp_update_confirmed/
Now that the leaked update that would add among others TV via WiFi to PSP, is apparently "genuine", it can be expected that those features will come to PSP at some time.

I'm interested in this TV function. What else than a WiFi access would you need for it to work? It can't show regular TV programs from my PC, can it, especially if my PC has no TV card or any such.
How would the TV part work in PSP?

Some options:

-USB TV tuner, would transform the PSP into a portable TV
-WiFi option 1: frameserver/client setup, the video content will be encoded/decoded on a server in realtime and then streamed to the PSP (not much calculation power required on the PSP side)
-WiFi option 2: PSP will be able to connect to network file systems and playback recorded footage of a PC's HD (the content is decoded on the PSP = more calculation power required)

Yahoo's PSP review

"After years of stumbling in a consumer electronics industry it pioneered, Sony may be a bit premature in declaring the PSP a "21st Century Walkman."

But for games, it's an attractive, uncompromising system that successfully takes the true power of video games out of the living room and into your hands."

So, will PSP do for handheld market as PS1 did for home console?

Yeah i mean cause now PSP is selling so little that Sony must be really desperate... Errr... :|

Honestly, I'm rapidly losing interest in PSP. I'm just getting so pissed for all the delays.

Now they say the PSP won't be released in Europe for several months, whereas originally it should have released in March here too.

I was so waiting to be able to purchase it in March or April at least, but now I'm starting to rationalize and I'm not so sure I need a PSP after all (I'd want it ok, but so I'd want a GC, xbox, DS... but I know I wouldn't ave time for them). Maybe I'll just settle with my PS2, GT4 and the few upcoming top games until PS3 and possible future PSPee with clamshell design and 5 Gig microdrive :)

Sony, do you hear me!!! I won't buy your PSP if you don't at least give me solid info when it'll be released in Europe!?!?!?

Um, aren't Japan and Europe in the same region (region 2)? ;)

Yes, but I want to buy it from a store, not from internet.
Buying gadgets from internet is just not the same for me, don't really know why :? I guess it just lacks that "shopping" feeling :)
I like to see it and hold the package before I buy.

In addition, I rather have the official european model with at least english manual, though I probably won't need to read it to be able to use the PSP.. it's something I like to have with my gadgets.
And what if all the european games aren't after all playable in japan PSP.
Even if I bought an imported japanese PSP I would need games for it too.
Ridge Racer should be import friendly, but isn't there already some minor improvements in the US version, same with Lumines. Of course I could buy a japanese PSP and games from US but that's too much hassle for me.
What if there are some minor improvements in PSP hardware when it's released here, or new colours. I'd be sorry then I got the japanese PSP.

But if the PSP really isn't available here but sometime in autumn, maybe I'll crack and order a japanese R2 PSP after all :?
Is LinkSan (sp?) the best place to order one? How are the customs when importing one?
Is the japanese PSP charger compatible with european electrics? What about WiFi etc.. would there be some unexpected incompatibility problems in the future?
I've never really dared import electric gadgets, I just don't want to feel insecure buying imported stuff and later find out there's some problems with compatibility. €200 is after all quite a lot of money for me.

you pay (at least here in belguim: 20% tax + import tax, so roughly 28% of total sum declared on the package)
but when i sell psps , i declare them 40€so nobody has to pay taxes when they receive it

wifi standart has no region. only problem that could matter is
a japanese ridgeracer can't maybe play with a european ridgeracer win wireles. but if you lateron buy a european game and pop that in your psp everything will play just fine since the psp itself is regionfree.

the poweradapter is regionfree too ;) , well the adapter is, but you just need to plug in the endlead from something you have (playstation2, radio etc..) in the end.(the transfo is 110v-220v)

Well if you lived on a REAL continent... ;)

That's bit weird :D . I have ntsc PS2 and Xbox, it is totally hassle free, UPS brought them to my home door, games are usually released earlier and they support progressive scan more often (PS2) and they are also cheaper, so I see no reason why we should stick with PAL-models. The only reason I can think is that reselling games is harder.

How about if you go to Anttila and hold the package and then place an order over the Internet :D

:)

There is a big(ish) firmware update for japanes PSP's available now, doesn't seem to add much, but the size is 14MB
When the firmware is updated, does it take space from the MemoryStick, as did the PS2 dvd software update, or does it flash some internal memory?

If it needs the MemoryStick for update, I'm glad I havent bought an import PSP yet ;)

as far as I understand it, you need to download it and it saves to your memorystick, and from there you go to launch game from memorystick in the main psp menu and it will install in the flashmemory of the psp itself.

Ok, thanks for the info hey69.

How big of a space is there reserved for firmware updates?
Would the rumoured browser, pda, messenger... update fit in there too?

wasnt it something like 32mb flash inside?
only time will tell about those other functions.
i *guess* the flash memory is reserved for firmware updates with additional support for new functions and aplications will be stored on the memorystick.
i'v read that the new firmware enables a few more things
and also the speed to go to sleep moden and poweroff is is much faster now. didn't try it myself .. yet
