nVidia Project Th-.. Shield (Tegra4)

http://uk.ign.com/articles/2013/12/02/nvidia-shield-now-supports-1080p-gamestream

Game streaming now "works at 1080p".
Since the Shield has a 720p screen, there's some downscaling happening in there.
I can't tell from the news if the streaming is made at 1080p and the Shield downscales or one can just select 1080p in the game and the main GPU's scaler downsamples to 720p prior to sending the stream.

Doesn't the 1080p streaming go directly to the external 1080p monitor via HDMI so why would it matter at all that the Shield screen is 720p.

If the game is rendered at 1080p and then downscaled to 720p then obviously the quality should be a lot better than the whole thing rendered at 720p from the start.

199 for a limited time until they dump it to $99 to try and clear remaining stock (and failing, because the thing's so damn huge and ugly.)

Here's the reason the titan-z is three thousand bucks by the way. To recoup the shield losses! :p

Or they're just clearing stock to give way to Shield 2 with a TK1 and 5.5" 1080p screen.

I don't see the point in going 1080p for the next shield(if it exists).
Waste of GPU power at this stage.

Not if you're streaming games from a full fledged desktop, or even watching 1080p videos.

Regardless, 5.5" 1080p displays should be dirt cheap today, again thanks to all the chinese phone manufacturers launching cheap smartphones with those screens.

The incremental investment needed for Shield was "only" ~ $10 million USD. Considering that NVIDIA has likely sold many tens of thousands of units already (with very limited distribution to boot), any net losses would be miniscule at best considering that Shield hardware and accessories were sold for a profit and not for a loss. Anyway, it is obvious that next generation Shield will be coming very soon at a price point near $299 USD, so it is common sense that first generation Shield would be reduced in price. And if you don't like Shield (most owners such as myself absolutely love it), then so be it, move on elsewhere.

At the end of the day, there is no handheld on the market that is as powerful or as feature filled as Shield (and Tegra K1 will take handheld performance to a whole new level).

And FWIW, there has been many new features that have been added in the last 9 months.

Can it be bought at any stores or is it online only? Going to las vegas in april :)
EDIT: Well it seems as there is plenty of options for me.. so last thing to know, anything remotely region locked about this?

I'm really not sure about distributors. I pre-ordered my unit a long time back from Newegg.com . As for using it overseas, I can't imagine there would be any issue, but you may want to ask at the official forum: https://forums.geforce.com/default/board/136/general-discussion/

I think streaming @ 720/60 should be sufficient for most users as it lowers the desktop performance and bandwidth requirements.
Additionally a higher quality 720p screen would likely use less power than these cheap 1080p screens and (apart from resolution) it would provide a better image.
Perhaps they could even offer a higher refresh rate, say 75-85hz?

Don't get me wrong though, i want to see a shield using much higher resolutions, i just think that currently we would be better served with other improvements than just a res bump.

1080p for 5.5" is not that much of an overkill, and the panels we're talking about are actually pretty good, they're IPS with very decent contrast and speed.
Difference in power shouldn't make that much difference with the Shield's behemoth batteries.
Other improvements should include:
- Larger screen and smaller bezels (current shield has a 5" screen with large bezels)
- TK1 instead of T4
- Perhaps more RAM?
- ?

But here's what they could do that would make it mindblowing: use an autostereoscopic screen with 2560*720p.resolution.

Project Shield is a great handheld gaming device. No doubt about that. With Tegra 4, you can run almost any games you've found on Google Play Store or Tegra Zone. But i heard, the downside is when it's positioned in vertical mode. Many users find a lot of problems to use the touch screen in vertical orientation, the lid/screen makes it really hard to hold and operate the screen.

Welcome to USA I got one at Frys in Las Vegas. first impression is that it's a quality product, feels solid, downloading Vice City now :)

Yeah for more stuff..

Well I am sold, vice city is the only game I have tried and it's obviously fantastic..

I will have to get San Andreas as well :)

One thing is certain, a game like Vice City is still better played on the PS2, the controls are not fine tuned for the Sheild. Still, i played a few hours and plan to get deeper into the story, it's been a while after all.

Local (PC) game streaming seems to be very good quality wise, but the implementation can get a bit rough, you really need to be sure that everything is updated and online before you start the games from the shield.

But once you are in the game it's all controller mode and pretty smooth streaming.

So the lonely Shield BE3D supporter updates with more stuff :)

The Shield is a lovely Android device, the powerfull CPU/GPU not only helps in games, but also in everything else. I find myself installing non Gaming apps that i have on my phone a tablets (cheap tablets) and enjoying the added speed and battery life.

Gaming negatives are sadly plentiful, the lack of gamepad support on many games, makes them useless on the shield, this includes several premium pay games that i would think would support Gamepads in some fashion. However, when a game supports it, it's pretty awesome to play the games at highres full effect and lets not forget, most Android games are pretty cheap.

Another positive and unexpected (because i didn't think about it) is the Emulators. Amiga emulation, yes.. i had to try it.. so i installed a Amiga Emulation and Amiga Forever (kickstat) and found the Spaceballs demo 9 Fingers and was feeling very young again. I even tried Monkey Island, the Amiga game, just for fun of course since it's pretty much impossible to play without a mouse (the touchscreen mouse works, but it's not fun). Ran without a hitch. Next project is transferring my old Amiga Harddrive and see how that goes :)

SNES emulation is awesome, i have plenty of the cartridges, but have yet to pickup a SNES to replaced the broken one. But now i can play them on my Shield, and that Emulation supports the controller 100%

Next project.. Mame.. still need to dig a bit around in order to find a proper emu and roms.

Shield 2 should be an oblong-shaped slider device, kinda like the ill-fated PSP Go. This would help with using the device in vertical mode (you just slide in the controller sticks/buttons and they won't interfere anymore.)
