NVIDIA Fermi: Architecture discussion

Isnt that what student loans are for? :devilish:

You get loans in high school?
Well now I can even manage a 2S Xeon system, I just don't see the point :p

@Silus My dad gets me the worst GPU uarchs. Yes I got the FX too, which was why I strictly wanted something ATI for a change (which was still fast for 1280).

Distinction between nVidia itself speaking, people speaking on nVidia's behalf (unofficially, w/o affiliation) doing all the coercing and abrasive blanket statements, and the intended effect. Take note.

A picture won't do anything. But at the same time it could do everything. To not tell, to suggest, lets everyone else but you do the talking for you. But on the same hand, people wouldn't differentiate between officialspeak and fanspeak- somehow it merges on the internet because it doesn't matter when people are being annoying (dillusioned too maybe).

Mental Ray 3.8 with iRay should be shipping, but only ends up in 3ds Max and Maya (and XSI) next year. How well it does its job will determine if I get a GF100 or just end up waiting for NI, but Mental seems to make it clear that small settings are much more appreciated (more speedup wrt traditional GI rendering?)

Uses CUDA and possibly monte-carlo GI integrated into a traditional rendering path?

good to see things have moved past talking about the picture.

now we're talking about talking about the picture

and look at me, I'm talking about talking about talking about the picture

$1700 for first dibs on Fermi - http://www.evga.com/blackfriday/

You also get a motherboard and 4 GTX-285's for free in the deal
"Not only will these lucky 50 people be able to decimate the competition* with their new 4-Way SLI system, but they will be first in line to get the next generation of graphics when they are released. Everyone that purchases this deal will have a special option to get a next-generation powered card at launch!"

*By competition we mean GTX295 SLI.

What PSU out there has 12 PCIe connectors? :???:

yeah I noticed that too.. damn gonna need a 2KW PSU to drive those in a loaded system.. funny thing is two 5970s would be faster and cheaper (though one would be "losing out" on the chance to "be first in line to get the next generation of graphics when they are released"

1.5 Kilowatt would probably suffice there. But you'd want one that has configurable power connectors so you could set it up for 12 connectors. Like the Silverstone 1.5 Kilowatt PSU. Not sure why those cards have triple 6 pins though.

Not according to TR. GTX 285 SLI was often faster than the 5970 in their review. Besides, the 50 guys this is marketed to probably aren't concerned with "cheaper" in the first place :D Would be nice to know how many of them actually get sold though.

“Look, I understand that some people might be feeling anxious because we haven’t published detailed information about Fermi-based GeForce cards,” said Del Rizzo. “But, I can assure you that data is forthcoming. The wait will be well worth it, especially when people understand what products based on Fermi are capable of.”

Thoughts? or am i stirring up the hornets nest again?

I'd had it bolded like this:
“Look, I understand that some people might be feeling anxious because we haven’t published detailed information about Fermi-based GeForce cards,” said Del Rizzo. “But, I can assure you that data is forthcoming. The wait will be well worth it, especially when people understand what products based on Fermi are capable of.

Meaning (IMHLO): You can do so much more with a real man's GPU, you won't worry too much about the wait or the gaming Fps any more. ;)

to think about that, maybe nvidia delivers a useful GPU-accelerated app for home users with its next generation. But to be honest, nothing comes to my mind when I think about what kind of app this can be.
