NPD May 2008

Comparing the numbers, GTA4 / HW sales / HW LTD:

Code:
PS3 442.9K / 208.7K / 4,447,200
X360 871.3K / 186.6K / 10,272,200

PS3 is selling proportionally more software units of GTA4, and it is selling more hardware too. I think there's a connection here - Nico is moving some hardware in the end...

Well, it's not the explosive numbers people were expecting/wanting. It may be moving some hardware, but not huge numbers.

But not much. Certainly not the flood of upgrading PS2 owners that people like Pachter predicted would accompany GTA.

Also, I've seen much greater pro-PS3 splits with some other games, like Assassins Creed. Most of the PS3 userbase is newer (all it's sales are at least one year newer than 360) so you tend to see greater than install base sales on PS3, but 360 GTA is still winning in US nearly 2-1, which is better than I expected personally. In UK 360 has a significant hardware lead but not much of a GTA lead, for example

Also, it's been pointed out last years May NPD was something like 338k Wii, 155k 360, and 82k PS3. So in reality all hardware is up.

Yeah, prices are down quite a bit and there's more games. All the systems have something worth playing, so it's not surprising they're all doing pretty well. Well, the Wii would be a surprise if you'd said it would sell like this before launch, but now these monthly numbers are run of the mill.

Thanks, no Europe numbers ? :(
Europe only gives rankings, no numbers. From week 23

I dunno, I've checked out some of the gamersyde videos on MGS4, and seriously... from the first 12 or so minutes, the player gets control for like 30 seconds and can't do anything reasonable in those cases either. All the rest is B-grade hollywood level engine movies, slo-mo and shooting and all, taking themselves far too seriously. Seemed like the rest of the game will be pretty heavy on this as well, with confusing stories, characters and all.

So I really can't see people getting interested in this game if they have no previous experience with the series. If the action itself would be awesome, maybe I'd be more curious, but the actual gameplay I've seen so far is just as average as any other. The hype might get some customers on board, but KZ2 is much more of a system seller IMHO - and even that will not be able to move serious hardware, if GTA4 has failed to do so.

I mostly agree with this but there's always going to be the odd person drawn in by the hype, but as I said above I expect nothing more than a moderate increase, and mostly due to the walmart (and price matches) deal.

That's the thing though - in my opinion most of the games that both Sony and Nintendo have been saying will be the next big thing are really just sequels and old concepts redone with tweaks and better graphics. Look at my 360 games list thread in the games forum - pretty much all the games I'm looking forward to (based on being the best games I can see released) are sequels, with precious little being new IPs or something completely different.

Nintendo on the other hand - while having a healthy helping from the "Nintendo family" - are definitely the ones offering up brand new goodness which is bringing in gamers who want something genuinely new, and not just last gen's titles done better. While the games certainly aren't all to my taste (Wii Fit, Wii Play, Wii Sports, etc) I can see why they are the ones doing so well and converting last gen to next gen.

There are of course exceptions - Uncharted, Gears, LBP, hopefully Too Human - but the vast majority of people's "want" list are sequels. Am I alone in thinking this isn't a good thing for Sony and MS?

Forgetting about the Wal-Mart action, I think one can expect for the MGS4 PS3 bundle to do quite well also. With that one it goes beyond simply the game itself.

Anyway GTAIV, I agree with the people saying that the time they bought there consoles was much earlier on in the cycle. I think a lot of the initial sales for both systems were frankly to people that weren't looking towards the games of the moment, but to the games of the future. Have to remember that purchasing patters are likely to reflect the increased wealth (and age) of the gaming demographics overall.

Will GTA4 reach the same numbers as COD4 and Halo3?

What's the spread as it stands now? I think it's a guarantee though.

I'd think that's still a moving target at this point, it's probably past Halo3 (but on two platforms). I dunno that its going to out do halo3 on 360 alone. It might catch cod4 assuming it has any kind of legs, cod4 had the advantage of a holiday release.

I'm sure GTA will do better in Europe if you're talking worldwide I'd expect it to pass them both easily.

Well yeah I was talking worldwide, and yeah I think it'd be a certainty. I should have specified though, because no doubt it's hard to keep track of when people are speaking NPD alone and when they've jumped to global.

Call of Duty 4 hit 10 million worldwide in June (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_of_Duty_4:_Modern_Warfare#Sales). Halo3 hit 8.1 million worldwide in January 2008 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halo_3#Sales). Not sure what the USA totals are, or if these numbers are trustworthy.

In 2007 it sold 3.04 million copies in the USA. Halo 3 sold 4.82 million in the USA 2007. Not sure if these numbers are trustworthy ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_in_video_gaming#United_States

Gamasutra with the PR from Nintendo, Sony and MS

Sony said:
Poised for continued momentum, PS3 is delivering on its breadth and depth of exclusive titles to its gaming fans with today's prized exclusive title launch of Metal Gear Solid 4.

Microsoft said:
The company also noted its "record-breaking software attach rate of 7.7." Said the company, "Only Xbox 360 is providing an improved software attach rate for third party games generation-over-generation."

Nintendo said:
Nintendo may have had the easiest job of the three companies in delivering its spin, as it controlled the top two hardware slots as well as seven of the top ten software slots. Unsurprisingly, it pointed to peripherals such as Mario Kart Wii's motion-sensing wheel and the Wii Fit Balance Board as ingredients for success.

That's starting to look like Japan: "The press release noted that 19 of the top 30 games in May are for Nintendo systems."

Another interesting one: Said Sony Computer Entertainment America president Jack Tretton, "Leading into a pivotal season packed with blockbuster titles and unique online service offerings, consumers have chosen the PS3 as their home entertainment console of choice - showcased by its year-over-year sales growth of 155 percent.

--- Right, only because they sold a pitiful 82k last May. That's an impressive spin.

Microsofts NPD PR calls out E3, a pretty drastic step imo

Xbox 360: E3 bound

* Last month we showcased an all-star lineup of games including “Gears of War 2,” “Fable 2,” “Banjo and Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts,” “Viva Piñata 2,” and “Too Human.” We still have quite a few aces left up our sleeve; see you at E3 next month!

Ninja Blade? Motion controller? Price drop? All possible/likely candidates imo.

Last year MS cut the price in time for Madden in early August. Considering E3 is in mid-july, it's possibly not too early.

Ninja Blade? Motion controller? Price drop? All possible/likely candidates imo.

There's a few other possible titles, such as Alan Wake, I don't think a motion controller would generate much excitement really unless they're hiding some AAA titles to go with it. A price drop would certainly be interesting, but the way they've been playing this gen (very conservative) I don't expect anything drastic.

Oh I'm expecting a 80-100 drop. Just whether in fall or sooner.

They could also announce 60GB premium or something like that (some old rumor claimed it was supposed to be done June 31..it was wrong). Wi-fi in Elites, Blu Ray elite (doubtfull, too early) and other speculated hardware changes, to go along with other stuff.

Alan Wake I guess is possible to show, but it's def a 2k9 title now.

The only way MS will drop $100 is if they can still make money on the hardware at that price, which I think would take a node shrink. Their goal is having the division be profitable, I don't expect them to do anything to jeopardize that.

Blu-ray makes no sense to me at all, at best it would be a curiosity like the halo edition or the hddvd drive. I think they've been burned on that enough.
