NPD December 2007

DS is unreal, just unreal. When you start figuring it sells incredibly well in every market, you just start to come up with mindboggling hardware numbers. For example, I am sure several individual weeks DS has sold over a million units worldwide. Some weeks probably over two million.

Not even to mention in Japan and Europe it totally dominates the software charts.

No way they are close to breaking even with mere 325k LTD.
I'm sure they are close to, if didn't break even already.
Fortunately for them, they don't have to get even in US only, but remembering that revenue comes from copies sold to retailers, US may already be enough.
Hopefully the game is going to have some legs and their WW sales will eventually take them to a million units, where they should be about breaking even. ND have been working on Uncharted for almost 3 years and they are much bigger studio now (and have always been a premier operation).
They also develop to-be-shared technology for PS3, you know.
ND are completely Sony owned studio so they can not do multiplatform even if they really wanted to.

Quite funny suggestion it was, especially considering it had "smart" in it.
Anyway, if Uncharted had sold well as opposed to CoD4 or AC, people would be criticizing poor third party sales on PS3 citing exclusives as a cause.
So I'd think it's reception and sales are very good for Sony (and ND) since it has little chance of being a system seller.

This is because the DS is simply such a incredible device, it has been getting all my gaming attention lately and it's the only device I can truly see keeping me interested in gaming at this point. I thank Nintendo everyday for my DS, truly amazing device.

Uncharted sold similar by userbase to Mass Effect. 300k>3m, 900k>9m. That makes it look a bit better. I dunno though, the lower the userbase, generally the higher percent you sell into.

You're right. At some point such ratios are ignored for overall volume. It'd be like saying madden sales on the PS2 are disappointing since it only did 2mil with a 40mil install base. Ratio wise, sure! but the absolute volume is so high that such ratios are not valid anymore.

As overall console installbase increases, attach ratio for individual games to the console decreases.

According to Sonycowboy: UT3 at over 100k. 9th best PS3 title. 61st overall. There was a rumor about 109k on Gaf so I'll take that as valid.

Had Epic brought it out on the 360, carried the Gears hype and promoted it well, it'd be doing Gears numbers and giving CoD4/AC a good run. Instead, it took a dump.

Now with the "UT3 who?" stigma attached to it due to PS3 sales, I expect a similar flop on the 360 when it comes out. I expect them to work on Gears 2 now. They know who daddy is!

Those ratios are certainly useless for weighing commercial success, however they should not be for people eager to criticize PS3 owners regarding poor sales of exclusives.

Most of that criticism is due to the 'just wait til xxx' comments. The next game was always supposed to be the game that turned the disappointing ps3 sales into a juggernaut like the ps2. It quite simply is not going to happen in the US.

Do you really think UT3 could do Gears numbers? It mighta been a million seller, but 4m I doubt. People seem really, really apathetic to the Unreal franchise of late, on PC as well. I dont think even games like Unreal Championship on Xbox sold well. That series is hurting.

i wouldn't say terrible, but to each his own. PS3 probably did relatively well in europe, and obviously has a comfortable second place in Japan. as for coming close to the 360, i'd say ~800k isn't too far from 1.1m.

They are way off especially considering all that sony poured into the holidays. Price cut, AAA exclusives, new model and a 5 week NPD. I would say close to 30% less sales is very significant. Both MS and nintendo had shortages to add insult to injury. MS doing only ok still gained 450k on them this month.

Japan is meaningless to anything but the Wii and DS. There is not enough sales of the PS3 to support any real game development.

Yep, it's not going to be easy to sell something that's seen as something nobody wanted last year. They should make some significant changes and release it on the 360 as UT4.

The series is hurting because they keep releasing the same damn game. I think people are realizing that and they know if they didn't like it before they're not going to like it now.

Long term, probably not but I can see that sort of an FPS selling really well during the holiday season on the 360. It'd have to marketed well and if they could've pulled off the marketing piece, you'd likely see good holiday numbers for it.

This is exactly why I wrote "fairty tale" in the first post.

Where is this 800-900k coming from? If it's VGchartz, no need to reply.
if VGChartz was my source, i would have said 820k. but considering they have some reason to believe Uncharted is selling better in PAL regions, i think 800-900k ww is a safe bet.

Has Epic resolved any user mod issues with MS ? In any case, Epic and Sony also fumbled in UT3 marketing (last minute changes in launch date, user mod tools not ready and clunky to deploy, limited quantity during launch, ...), so 109K sounds decent to me too.

As long as PS3 can garner enough momentum and its own user base, it will be a worthwhile platform. The collective game library will sell the console. If they get lucky with one or two system seller, then all the better.

Yes they should outside resistance no exclusive has done even saints freaking row numbers. Projects taking several years and 20+ million dollars are not outselling a GTA knock off. The user bases are similar enough last year for a fair comparision. COD4 and AC sold solid enough so there is no real excuse for PS3 exclusives to sell like they are.

My guess i sony and its hyping future games. People are putting off purchases because of it. While the activision was pushing is games like a mother this holiday season. The whole sony marketing team failed 2 great games in uncharted and r&c.

we all knew the games that were coming for the PS3 and that a new 40GB SKU was coming... but who honestly thought the PS3 would outsell the 360 this holiday season, especially in the US... by far MS' strongest market? again, i'm not saying this was a successful holiday season... i'm just saying that Sony did all they could, and it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. their numbers aren't particularly good, but they aren't terrible imo.

i know Japan isn't nearly as significant as US and PAL... thats why i listed it last. my point was, combined ww holiday sales are probably not far from the 360's. but i guess thats getting OT.

I agree about the changes in launch date and the fact that I haven't seen a single comercial for it but were user mod tools really that important especially in a newly released game. If so it would be clear that UT3 is not for the average joe gamer which drove software sales this year.

UT3 is not a new game. It can draw on existing mods that are familiar to old users.

I don't know how they went wrong with Uncharted, but with Ratchet and Clank, it's a platformer not named Mario.

I bought R&C. I bought Mario Galaxy, and I'll buy Banjo when it comes out, but the platformer heyday has long past, in relation to popularity.
