Not Xbox 2 or Xenon, but Xbox 360

playstation is definitely fruity.

Your opinion. But if "PlayStation" is fruity, what does that make "Gameboy?"

And don't even get me started on Virtual Boy. "Hey, Joe, why don't you go home and play with your Virtual Boy - that is, if you actually have one!"

:p

"playstation" sounds like a toy for toddlers, especially when the buttons are labelled with simple geometric shapes. that's, imo, the worst part of the playstation- STUPID buttons!

Surely you guys aren’t taking each other serious?!

Anyhow, Gameboy while at first wasn’t, is now geared towards a young populous while the Playstation from the start was geared words the mature gamer in mind. Given that fact, the 'Playstation' name is the goofiest or ill thought out name of the bunch. Xbox, Dreamcast and GameCube fit the consoles and the target audience perfectly.
Sounds like allot of you guys here dislike the Xbox... hating silicon, metals and plastic... pathetic.

In the end, what the hell are you going to be playing? The name?

Stupid? I don't think so... it's a very clever design.
IIRC its design philosophy is that those buttons are free from specific languages/alphabets, i.e. A-button or B-button. Those primitive pictograms are more universal.

Oh, but in the case of the xbox, there's so MUCH plastic to hate!

No, seriously, I don't hate it at all, I just don't care much for it, that's all. It's a small underpowered PC in a casing that is too big. Not much to get overly excited about there IMO. Now, the second incarnation will probably be much more exciting, though I dunno if I want to give microsoft any more of my money no matter how cool it is. I don't like that company very much.

i think it's childish. you use basic geometric shapes with toddlers. "hit circle, hit circle!" how lame is that? It just feeds into the "this is a toy for little kids" image.

the "playstation" with "circle, square, triangle, cross" buttons sounds like something tyco would make...

Sage, you seem abnormally put off by geometric shapes, as well as the thought of appearing "childish." I wonder why?

In any case - your opinion. The controller itself is very appealing to most people and it has been very successful. Certainly, it's played its own part in the dominance of Sony's consoles.

Your mileage may vary.

But back to your obsession - what the hell's the difference what's on the buttons when the console itself is famous for "mature" content such as Grand Theft Auto and countless others?

Do you feel any less childish playing Super Mario Party on a Gamecube controller?

Yeah, definitely an advantage in case if they play it in Uranus ;)

Oh, but clearly you're wrong. Remember, the original PlayStation was the console that opened gaming to a whole new market. Didn't early numbers show that the average PSX owner was 22 or 24 years old? In any case, Sony opened up a whole new demographic and broadend the market to ages previously unheard of in the industry.

So much for childish.

I myself am 35 and I don't give a damn if there's Bozo, Cookie, and the Powerpuff Girls on the buttons. As long as I can play the games I want to play, that's all that matters.

This is actually a very valid and interesting discussion. Ask any marketing product manager and they'll tell you a great name is an incredible asset to have. And from where I sit, knowing a thing or two about marketing and positioning, "PlayStation" is a winner.

With 180 million consoles sold worldwide, and incredible brand recognition, how could it not be?

(And can you please explain for me the meaning and value of the name "Dreamcast"? I would just love to know.

Yes, there's a lot of value in a good name. Shakespeare was right; a rose by any other name would not smell as sweet.

the last time i owned a console was when i was 12 so I've never done that. i just remember back when the PSX first came out and I was 11 or 12 (don't remember exactly when it was) and I saw them in stores I just thought to myself "I don't get why these things are everywhere, it's just a little kids toy"

Heh. I was 25 when PlayStation launched in the U.S., and I had been frothing at the mouth over it for more than a year.

Come launch day on September 9, 1995, I was the first in line at my local Toys R Us.

Maybe being just 11, you were more self-conscious about being perceived as childish?

Personally, I saw how Sony was promoting the console, with Mortal Kombat 3 and that busty polygonal babe from Battle Arena Toshinden, and I thought to myself, "Awwww yeaaaah!"

Reality disagrees with your notion, but your opinion is respected. :p

thats probably part of the reason i didnt like it. i despised, and still do, fighting games. i see them as rather pointles and quite boring. they are the bane of good gaming. also, someone mentioned that the PSX opened up the world of gaming for a whole lot of people. that's a good point, and another reason why i despise it so much. the PSX is to blame for making gaming so mass-market and rife with short-lived crowd-pleasing thrills, sucking the life out of gaming. Games these days are almost all attempts to wow the hordes of mainstream irresponcible imbecillic testosterone-pumped fratboys just long enough to get them to feed the publishers another $50 and then entertain them with just enough short-lived thrills to convince them to get their friends to feed the publishers a few more $50's. And my gaming experience is hurting bigtime because of it.

Sage, what are you doing here in the console forums, have you been here before? I don't remember you have.
;)
